Un rhum dégusté au WLP. Profondeur aromatique avec un équilibre entre l’atelier mécanique et les fruits au nez. Je reste un bon moment à renifler ce rhum, très bon signe pour la suite… Un premier goût de whisky non tourbé, puis les notes de Caroni et les fruits. Le whisky reste présent en finale. Autant je trouvais le nez inspirant, autant les arômes de whisky assez marqués en bouche me déçoivent un peu. Cependant c’est un distillat de grande classe, aucun doute là dessus. Regoûté et les impressions sont identiques, un très beau nez et une bouche, à mon goût, trop marquée par le whisky.

Plenty of sweet notes of vanilla and toffee on the nose, some wood, plus subtle citrusy orange aromas and slight hints of typical dirty tar notes. Very well integrated alcohol. Mouth-filling and powerful on the palate with tar, roasted wood, without becoming too "dirty". In addition, cool menthol and gum notes, slightly earthy-peaty, subtle allspice, and again elegant sweetness of toffee and vanilla, which are, however, significantly less present than in the nose. The finish is pleasantly long-lasting with wood, tar and toffee sweetness. Again light smoke and earthy notes. One of the really good 1998 Caronis, a very successful selection.

Very round and elegant 98 Caroni. Quite sweet with roasted nuts and milk chocolate on the palate. Very nice and enjoyable. Won‘t hit the mark if you are looking for dirty notes, however.

Powerful Caroni with typical smoky notes and spicy depth. The balance between sweet and bitter aromas ensures an intense taste experience. Complex and multi-layered, with a pleasant length in the finish.

Edit: tried again, good cigar companion, but unfortunately it doesn't make it into my personal top group. Online Tasting RumX with Steffen. Thanks for organizing and for the split at a "humane" price. Very round Caroni with a nice not so dirty profile. If the prices weren't so utopian, this would have deserved far more, but that remains in the back of my mind. But a tasty '98 representative.

Nose already fruity and balanced in sum restrained. Lots of caroni on the palate, tends a little towards Laphroiag, medicinal (iodine), salt. The Islay whisky impression continues in the finish with smoke, bacon, salt and iodine. My glass stood for a very long time (covered but about 4 hours) and I'm not sure how much change the long standing time made. On the palate and in the aftertaste I have a strong association with whisky (Laphroiag) which I don't really like in rum but here it goes well together. Overall, a very good, intense rum with an impressively intense and long finish.

Classic Caroni profile! Very round, balanced, fruity, classic dirty, woody rum. The alcohol is integrated well. This one didn‘t knock my socks off. The price tag is also…. from another world.

Besonderer Ort, besonderer Rum. Süd-Norwegen und ein Caroni. Den habe ich direkt vom Steffen bekommen. Danke 😊. Nase: elegant und rund, sehr fruchtig-frisch mit Zitrone, Limette und Maracuja, leicht und angenehm dreckig mit Teer, Gummi, etwas Jod, etwas Essig und feinem Zigarrenrauch. Hinten eine schöne Karamell-Honig-Süße, die sich wieder wunderbar mit der Limette und der Maracuja verbindet. Schöne fruchtige Caroni-Nase ohne Menthol. 9,0 Gaumen: deutlich trocken und dreckiger als in der Nase. Würzig-holzig, schwarzem Pfeffer mit Muskat und wieder Jod mit Gummi. Getoastet, nicht ganz verkohlt. Aber auch fruchtig-bitter mit Limettenschale. Hinten leicht salzig-speckig mit kaltem Zigarrenrauch. Gerade der mittellange Abgang ist herrlich Caroni-typisch. 9,0 Ohne direkten Vergleich mit anderen 98ern, gefällt mir dieser auch ob der Urlaubsstimmung sehr gut ☺️ und ich mag halt Caroni

Steffen has chosen something fine here... a wonderful, initially fruity and sweet nose, to which some workshop aromas are added with longer standing time. The same interplay on the palate, then a little more barrel and spice. Creamy and pleasant, it fills the mouth. The finish is long and is accompanied by spice and workshop aromas. I like it 👍🏻

You get that freshly tarred road smell after winter either through potholes or in the glass. The combo with milk chocolate I don't recall from any Caroni. On the palate you notice how well the alcohol is integrated and alongside burnt wood and rubber comes the idea of a fantastic crème brûlée. Deductions for the B note, as I find the finish untypically "short" for Caroni. It lingers a moment on the palate, but this delicious crème brûlée disappears too quickly.

A Caroni on the sweet, sensual side. On the nose, empyreumatic notes are discreetly replaced by a more pastry-like (cookie), caramelized and spicy profile. Hazelnut, dried fruit and roasted notes add further roundness. A Caroni that seems very gourmand. There's no mistaking the sweetness of the caramel candy in the Caroni 12 yo. The warmth of spices, toasted oak and roasted notes joins with rubber and medicinal notes. This is a lively, well-structured rum, with well-integrated alcohol. Very pleasant on the palate, but not spectacular either. The finish could have been longer, with the pastry aromas taking over the palate with great greed and an almost mellow quality. The other aromas are totally dominated, notably dried fruit, roasted and medicinal. An attractive Caroni overall, but clearly not at the top of the range. The pretty bottle syndrome proved true once again, with a stratospheric release price unfortunately.

Tasted at the RX Masterclass with Steffen Meyer on 21.12. (many thanks for the interesting background info!). Good, very rounded 98er. The bottling is primarily aimed at collectors who don't necessarily value price/performance the most.

It’s a decent rum without any flaws but also not overly complex. With the price tag in mind I am kind of disappointed but I will leave this out of the rating. Nevertheless it was nice to taste it once.

Wonderful balance on the nose. Chocolate, rubber, tar, leather but also sweetness and fruit. The volume doesn't come through in either a positive or negative way. In the mouth it seems too light in places. You can also taste some wood. Not unpleasant but engaging. Harmonious Caroni notes on the finish. This bottling doesn't quite manage to win me over.

Very nice continental 1998 Caroni. Vanilla-chocolate toffee with gum, tar and some citrus zest. I like it ... but for the (far too high) issue price, I would of course prefer a tropical one. But that doesn't change the comparably high quality of the continental competition.

A really good Caroni with nicely dirty aromas. I personally don't find the whisky aromas on the palate and finish really disturbing, as they are subtle and fit this expression of Caroni. Unfortunately, the price is a bit too high.

I was hoping for more overall. I wouldn't be surprised if it was in a whisky barrel for part of the time. Unfortunately, this also bothers me here and results in a point deduction. Apart from that, a tasty, complex caroni 98 with a medium-long finish. Furthermore, I can't even begin to understand why I would pay almost €2000 for this.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at the time of its greatest glory rum that was added in a ratio of 1:10 to the naval blend. It was too distinctive and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000, the distillery ended production and was closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. And interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die". I recommend it, Caroni is really a unique rum.

Very spicy Caroni with pleasant sweetness. Plus the typical Caroni notes, which here are not in the foreground. Wood note also comes through. Especially in the finish it gets slightly bitter. This is a well-rounded bottling. Only the fruity notes are a bit missing for me.

Sehr schöne Nase, milde Süße vor allem Vanille und eine sehr beeindruckende Würze am Schluss etwas Gummi. Im Mund zuerst süß, dann rostig würzig mit deutlicher Holznote. Alkohl ist super eingebunden. Ein wirklich schöner Caroni, nicht so dreckig, wie von einigen an Caroni geliebt aber ein wirklich sehr guter Rum. Hat aber leider auch seinen Preis.

very complex on the nose with a variety of fruity notes, dominated by citrus fruits, combined with roasted and woody smell. Not typical Caroni, more a sherry finished Islay whiskey. But definitely a 9.0 on the nose. It loses a bit on the palate, especially the fruitiness vanishes. The roasty and woody notes dominate. A long finish that could likely be the finish of a Lagavulin or Laphroaig. Nice, but not too much rum, more whiskey. Too expensive for what you get
