Overripe pineapple, banana and glue meet raisin, sour cherry and oloroso sweetness from the sherry casks. Most tasters find the marriage works, though the sherry does round off Hampden's wilder edges. A relaxed everyday Hampden rather than an ester bomb.

I prefer the Pagos 2023 over the last years edition!! This has more „Hampden“ power and the Sherry barrel is integrated much better (due the change of the barrels… maybe?) and the sherry stays more in the background like a faithful campanion and fit perfect with the Hampden flavours. Grilled pineapple meets sour cherries overwhelmed by esters 🤤🥃 The alcohol is very present, i would say typical for a young Hampden.

A rum I bought at half price. Nevertheless, I only like it moderately. Indeed, the ester part does not seem well controlled to me. You feel a medical alcohol and fermented side that I find not very pleasant.

Edit: I've now tasted all three Velier Hampden Pagos from 2022, 2023 and 2024 in parallel. The differences are then rather negligible and for me the conclusion remains that they are all very sherry-heavy, one more and the other less. Basically solid, but also interchangeable. Another edit: Tried it again today as CubaLibre, where it doesn't work at all because of the sherry note. Here it comes into its own once again. Therefore corrected downwards Franconian Tasting Gang Tasted again. Definitely tastes better to me than its predecessor. The sherry influence is much less here, which makes it more pleasant for me to drink. From the first impression, less sherry influence than its predecessor. With the 52% a super easy sipper at a good price. But I will taste it again in more detail at my leisure.

Significantly better than its predecessor. Less barrel influence and simply more Hampden. I quite like it. The typical HD markers (annas, papaya mango) are relatively well received here. Despite the reduced alcohol content, it is not optimally integrated. Quite solid in the fast Mai Tai, although not a highlight.

Less Sherry-Heavy than the 2022 version on the nose. I assume here Hampden leaned more towards Olorosso versus PX for the older version - just my guess, however. Same impression on the palate. HLCF profile is still present while the sherry influence is quite strong.

8,8:On the nose, the 52% gives it a sort of firm and easy elegance that isn’t out to wreak havoc on your sinuse. It is funky all the way and the initial aromas are of a musky, winey, almost tawny old port. It’s chock full of baking spices like cinnamon, cloves, a touch of nutmeg; it channels a soft line of olive oil and saline, before blooming into all sorts of additional stuff that shows off the funk: pineapples, mangoes, oranges and apples that are too ripe, plus florals, acetones and even some crushed hazelnuts and pistachios. There’s a lot to unpack here for anyone who takes their time with it. 9:On the palate is somewhat less forward. It’s lightly floral, and provides tastes of a patchouli air freshener and laundry detergent, cinnamon and cloves again, creamed rice, funky and fruity, with an on and off bite that’s fun to experience. Then comes out intense marzipan!There’s somewhat more nuttiness here, but also more tart fruits: passion fruit, cherries, mangoes, strawberries and some yoghurt. I like the sense of dusty spices that hung around, and while not overly sweet, the rum does have a sugary, liqueur-y background to it that works well with the caramel, vanilla and bananas you end up with. 9:The finish is pretty fine too – solid, long, not obnoxious – it doesn’t flaunt a bunch of esters, just quietly dials everything down so that instead of getting one thing after another, it’s like one thing after another is subtracted, until all you’re left with is some flambeed bananas, oranges, nuts, unsweetened chocolate and wine. I preferred this second release much more! The sherry finish is much more present than in the first release and makes everything much more balanced and more intense as flavors! The complexity and persistence are greater than the first release!

Still a little too much sherry for a Hampden for me. But a nice relaxed sipper with a good PLV. Significantly less sherry influence in the second tasting. Great summer rum.

A sweet sherry board where the barrels put on a show. The distillate goes a little under the radar and makes its presence felt with notes of esters and tropical fruits. This one is for sweet tooths looking for some ester funk. 87/100 or 6/10

From memory, more esters come through here compared to the first Pagos. Overall a nice sipper again. I don't find the sherry finish too dominant here, but it is of course noticeable. Certainly very suitable for introducing beginners to Hampden. Or for enjoyment in between. If it always has to be Hampden 😁🥃

This little shit seduces with a multi-faceted bouquet of dried fruit, honey, vanilla and fine spices. Fresh, sherry-plum nuances unfold on the palate, ending in a round, creamy finish!!! Pleasant!

The nose is rather unsettling and kind of metallic with overripe fruits and some vinegar. Some spices, vanilla and dried fruits are also there but the sourness I don’t really like. That said I was surprised by the sweet and complex body, ester mixed with dried fruits and different spices and caramel. The finish is quite balanced and makes up for the initial impression. Overall I like it even a bit more than the first release. // After some in an open bottle the initial sourness is almost vanished and you will find dried fruits, fruity esters, rum baking aroma, butter and some wood. Overall still a really nice drop.

Wow, at Hampden you clearly get only the good stuff, and this Pagos Sherry is proof of that! Esters obviously but well balanced, clearly a lot of ripe pineapple, a bit of wood, some red fruits, in short; pure pleasure!

The difference is the cask, and it is noticeable, the sherry is more evident and more on the hogo side, going towards almost a rotting meat taste that despite the description I appreciate and that netter fits to Hampden in my mind, even if still it has not reached the integration i found in some barrel samples at WLP back in 2024. Also this time, the aggressivity of Hampden is not well integrated with the sherry, resulting in a rum with many edges.

Addendum: A Hampden tasting, with Great House 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023, plus the New Beginnings and both versions of the Pagos. The first Pagos is already sweeter and heavier on the nose, the 23 Pagos seems fresher. Overall, I like the 23 Pagos a little better, the sherry finish is more subtle.

Well, Hampden meets sherry. That's what the label promises and that's exactly what it delivers - no more, no less. I'm not the biggest fan of sherry, but the combination works quite well here. Beyond that, however, it lacks a bit of complexity for more points.

The Hampden DNA is very clearly present and sherry can at most be described as an accompanying aroma. I actually find it difficult to tell whether this is just a young Hampden with a medium ester content or whether a finish has been added. Overall quite good, but there are still too few cask influences.

Tasted in direct comparison with the 2023 HLCF Whisky Live. On the nose they are very similar, the Whisky Live HLCF has more glue and the alcohol is a little more present, with the Pagos being a little nuttier. On the palate, the Whisky Live is simply more intense and brings more fruity notes, while the Pagos is more relaxed to drink and brings a little more sherry and fermentation. For me, the Whisky Live has the edge. Pagos 2023: 8.4 | Whisky Live HLCF 3yr: 8.6

It's really nice on the nose, jamaica funk with sherry / sour cherry. I really like it. The taste doesn't knock me off my feet, I would have expected a bit more fruit. For the price I'd rather get the Overproof.

Classic esters and fruity notes on the nose. On the palate, you can taste the influence of the sherry cask, as with its predecessor, but to a much lesser extent. It may be a matter of taste, but I found the stronger Olorosso influence more appealing - a successful experiment. It only plays a subordinate role in the 2023. Even though, as expected, there is a lot of sherry here, I am pleasantly surprised at how well this marries with the Hampden profile. Especially on the nose, full of dripping sweet fruit, the finish is less apparent on the palate.

Tasted in comparison with the 2022 and 2024 Pagos. The nose is fruity. There is less glue than in the 2022 and a bit more barrel. It smells sweeter than the other 2. It adds another layer compared to the 2022 which was a bit one-dimensional. It tastes a bit hot. The alcohol is less integrated than the 2022. There is rubber, it is drying and there are some sour notes. The finish is more barrel driven and quite dry. In conclusion this is less of a Hampden in the mouth than the 2022. Goes a bit too much to sulfur and rubber for me. And it was really a notch down on my second tasting.

I really like the interplay between the Hampden esters, which are not exaggerated, and the flawless sherry casks. The individual components come together to form a harmonious overall picture and ensure a multi-layered enjoyment, whereby nothing seems exaggerated or artificial. However, the sherry influence does take out one or two peaks, which makes the Pagos appear almost too round and smooth.

The nose gives a lot of pretty ripe fruits and one can feel the sherry, which gives a nice side to this rum. Its sweet and sugary at a balanced level, not too much at all. Palate is balanced with many flavours already felt on the nose, with a iodine/salt side. Finish is medium. I like this rum a lot !

One of the nights out, where you didn't plan much, but your favorite bar-owner wants you to try something. Much sherry and oak in the nose, and the first sip gave me an oily mouth-feel with plenty flavors, and a lingering aftertaste

The sherry cask influence is very present but is well balanced with the typical Hampden notes. I personally don’t like the combination of the dark and dry sherry notes with the exotic Hampden fruits and the sherry makes the rum feel a bit tired and unfresh. Nevertheless a complex and very interesting sip.

This Hampden stands out with this version aged in sherry cask, the nose is promising, ester, sherry, ripe banana. On the palate it's fruity and tangy like a Harlequin candy, very indulgent, personally I haven't gotten tired of it for several years. The finish is long with well integrated alcohol.

I have cross-tasted this bottling, as you can see in the picture, with other Hampdens. I can positively highlight that the influence of the cask finds a good/better balance (not too strong) than in the comparison product. The original product is clearly recognizable. The aging itself is too short for my taste. I would have preferred a rounder Pagos. And last but not least (others speak of a sulfur note) unfortunately there is such a nausea-inducing note included. It is not insanely present but unfortunately clearly perceptible. Therefore, on balance, I am disappointed by this Pagos, although on a high level.

A wonderful Hampden that really starts to grow on me the more often I sample this expression. My favorite part about this rum are the fruity and confecfionery aromas on the nose. The sherry influences are definitly noticable both on the note as on the palete. I am pleasently suprised that the oaky sherry married so well with the heavy aromas and flavors of Hampden. Making it quite distinct compared to the distilleries standard experessions.

I couldn't compare it directly with the 22, but this bottling is also absolutely balanced and great. Alcohol super integrated. Not terribly complex, but harmonious in all facets. Suitable for the masses and a good daily sipper

On the nose, funk, esters, a bit of port wine, and a little pineapple 🍍. The taste is dominated by fruity funk and esters, typical Hampden. In the mouth, the port finish comes through a bit, with hints of raisins. The finish has funk and raisins. The alcohol is well integrated. Good rum, but a bit more funk wouldn't hurt.

I find a very nice balance in the length, which is evolving. It shows good cask work and despite all the criticisms I think it's better than the other hampden ex sherries which I find less balanced.

The dark fruit flavors meld well with the base distillate, but the rum helps keep them from overpowering. Far from a bomb of intense over-ripe fruits this is a well balanced and delicious sipping rum that weds the Sherry casks and fruity distillate well. This is not something I expected to hold up as well as it did but it turned out great.
