Velier Hampden Specially Bottled for Whisky Live Paris 2023 HLCF 2020
"Great HLCF with sherry finish" sums up the mood here: classic Hampden esters, glue and overripe tropical fruit — pineapple, banana, mango — wrapped in sherry sweetness. At 3 years and 63.5%, several tasters call it young and a touch green, with the alcohol not fully tucked in. A few loved the sherry twist; others wished for more age and depth.
The community says- Big tropical esters
- Sherry adds richness
- But: Youthful, slightly green

Rum Friendly Club Advent Calendar, day 6. A nose of esters, tropical fruits (pineapple), and yellow fruits. Controlled esters and wood, a slight varnish, a fermented side, and a wide variety of fruits make this beautiful Jamaican-style nose complex. A lively first palate with fruits, esters, and alcohol, but everything balances out afterward with a sustained cedar wood that lingers long in the finish. A very pleasant pastry-like note. At the very end, the fruits linger even longer. A beautiful rum incredibly complex for its age.

Sherry influence not as dominant as I feared, but for me this was the last sherry cask finish or aged Jamaica rum for the time being... Still seems quite immature and unbalanced overall. Alcohol could be better integrated...
Review by Leo Krüper
Standard Hampden. Mature, round, balanced.
Review by Jakob
Delicious and quite remarkable for only three years in the barrel, the wood is already quite noticeable here - but overall too close to many other Hampdens despite the undisputed high quality.

RumX-Adventskalender 18.12.2023 Blind tasting: Hmm, when I opened the sample I first thought of Guadeloupe because of the sweetness. But then on the palate the esters came through quite clearly, although not bitingly. So I would guess a low ester Hampden. All right, now it was an HLCF. Does that still count as a low ester? 😉
Review by Oliver
Still quite young and wild. But the sherry cask brings a nice twist.

Rum X Advent 18.12.2023 Extremely tasty on the one hand. Sweet, syrupy and long finish is fun. In the mouth, Hampden and sugar sweetness like candy. But for me, the two poles in the mouth don't fit together harmoniously enough and seem more like two products. I could imagine that this rum would be a total hit if it had been matured for even longer.

Edit: RumX calendar day 18 and not recognized after 2 days of tasting. Am I bad Franconian Tasting Gang Another Hampden with the usual finish, of which there are now plenty on the market. Does not stand out from the other bottlings.
Review by Mirco
I'm amazed that such an aroma can arise with this young age. I tasted it with other, older Hampdens. It stands out a bit due to its sharpness. Still a great sipper that’s fun.
Review by Basti
I like it very much despite its young age. I don't find the sherry influence too dominant, on the contrary, the typical Hampden markers can be found both on the nose and on the palate. ABV well integrated.

1 th. Tasting 79 points. 2 th. Tasting date 08.08.2026 at Mr. M Nørregaards residence, together with Mr. Sørensen and Mr. P Chihan. RX17358 Hemden HLCF Cask no. 4a. 2023 Nose: First hit, solvent, cherry wooden tannins and varnish. Ananas, yellow tropical fruits. Mouth: Light solvent and oily. Sweetness, cherry wood. Pineapple light banana, fresh fruity acidity. Residual taste have an underlying medical note. Nutty and spiced. Tropical fruits in balance with the sweet cherry impression. Acceptable bottel. I’m not a big fan in general, keep the cherry where it belongs. The glass: Light solvent - oak. Tasting” At Mr. M Nørregaards residence”

Beautiful sherry maturation and better than Pagos, FRC & Co. but for me, for example, a far cry from the Hampden Rare Casks of the last WLP. I don't think I need any more short-matured sherry Jamaicans.
Review by Thunderbird
A fairly young Hampden with a sherry finish....that unfortunately doesn't convince me. Initially, the nose still has classic Hampden notes, but the sherry influence comes through here too. On the palate it is quite creamy and also intense... the alcohol is not very well integrated. The typical markers are also present here and, surprisingly, the wood influence is already quite clear! The finish is of medium length. Longer ageing would probably have done it good...so it remains one Hampden among many
Review by Martin Augustin
A clearly identifiable Hampden. The sherry is very present. Both very typical. Definitely good, but nothing extraordinary. And personally, I'm just not the biggest fan of (sherry) finishes.
Review by Adrian Wahl
Doesn't pick me up. Young and not very expressive.
Review by Timo Groeger
And another awesome Hampden after that. Yeah, what can you say?? :) A bunch of overripe tropical fruits, you taste banana and pineapple here, also lots of esters. A tasty Hampden.

#24DaysOfRum2023 - Day 18 On the nose a wonderfully rich combination of fruits, esters and active cask. It starts in true HLCF fashion with soured pineapple juice, hints of plantain and an abundance of berries, red and black. Then waves of cask spice before it sails into uncharted waters with really strong espresso, walnut (incl. skins), hot glue and clingwrap. More streamlined HD, more emboldened sherry in the mouth. Still very fruity, but the medicinal notes are tuned down in favour of even more prominent cask influence. Nuts have strong-armed the lighter sweets into nougat and, in combination with the strong espresso, have tipped the sweet-sour balance over to sweet-bitter. Ginger is introduced in the tail ensuring a lasting finish. The finish is slightly spicy and therefore driven into a lengthy experience: bitter, dry and rich in tropical and red fruits. It’s a very good expression, and I enjoyed it very much, but I’m unsure about the price point with the existence of Pagos in the same space.

In a blind tasting, I'd be pretty unsure that this is what Hampden smells like. The sherry cask has done a lot of work. On the palate there is quite a noticeable under-ripeness, but the sherry is very pleasantly and sweetly infused with classic Hampden notes. I'd be quite interested to see what another 3 or 4 years of aging would do to it. Edit: new sample, same rating
Review by Righrum
RumX advent calendar. Really young, the green part is noticeable and reduces my overall rating, nonetheless the sherry influence is really pleasant, I will come back to it and eventually review my score upright. 27.12.25 The re-tasting made me increase the score. 2+ years of oxydation had greatly increase my appreciation for the profile, now enjoyable
Review by Piotr Ignasiak
RX calendar day 18 I wouldn't have rated as 3 years old, nether in color or taste. I would have probably guessed around 7. The only tell is that it's not too complex and the finish is quite light. Other than that it's quite good, the esters are quite present, baked banana stands out, the nose also gives you a whiff of a wet barrel.
Review by Mentalo
The first sip was a young Hampden drowned in sherry. After some time in the glass, the Hampden dominated, although the sweetness unfortunately remained borderline. Overall clearly better than the Pagos, but I don't need a finish on the Hampden.
Review by Filip Šikula
In the aroma it's quite typical hampden, maybe a bit more technical than usual, in the taste beautifully integrated alcohol, along with a wide range of fruit flavours. Pity about the short finish. But for me a pleasant surprise!
Review by TheRhumhoe
Velier repeats its exercise of combining Jamaican rum with aging entirely in Sherry casks. The result is a rum with a rich and concentrated nose, loaded with overripe fruits like banana, pineapple and cherry, but also caramel, pastries and gourmand spices (vanilla). The HLCF mark shows off its esters, varnish and glue to keep us hooked. On the palate, the intensity of the fruits does not weaken: tropical fruits, citrus and red fruits mingle with marzipan, spices (vanilla, chili) and medicinal and phenolic notes. This Hampden wants to be gourmand, soft and fatty on the palate, with a nice roundness. The alcohol is well integrated, probably thanks to the indulgence of the sherry cask. The finish, of good quality, lets the aromas explode: fruits, pastries, cask and esters offer a small concentrated bomb, almost sweet, very round and pleasant. In short, a nice little Hampden that surprises by its age and aromas, especially on the spices, but it lacks a bit of depth due to its very concentrated and specialized style.
Review by Johannes
Very good Hampden! Slight tropical notes, marzipan, creamy, nice fruit basket, but not quite as fruity as other bottlings, even astringent. Amazing for a 3-year-old rum. But if you look at the rum objectively, it is more of a standard Hampden at a high level.
Review by Vincent D
Cool, a Hampden. Ah, a sherry finish, too bad. Even if here this note doesn't overpower everything, it's really not my thing. This one is less marked than a Pagos but it's still very noticeable. Too much for me. Banana. And Sherry.
Review by ilRummista
An excellent HLCF, despite its not very long aging it comes across as a fairly balanced and pleasant drink. The alcohol is well integrated and the hint of sherry is felt just enough, without ever being intrusive!
Review by rbfsnow
The ex-Sherry Cask works very good with HLCF and taste much better than the HLCF Overproof in Bourbon Cask. I hope to see in the future a 8y Edition 🤩
Review by Christian Rudt
Typical, classic Hampden. What seems particularly distinctive to me is the almost continuous almond note which I quite like.
Review by kondgab
Great HLCF with sherry finish. Alcohol could have been better integrated
Review by Lot-NAS
It is nice but also kind of unspectacular. Better get yourself a Hanpden 8 + the regular HLCF. Or, looking at secondary market prices, two of each.
Review by Jarek
Very tasty Hampden, very mature for three years. Sherry influence noticeable, but not as dominant as in Pagos.

RumX Advent Calendar No. 18: Light ester notes, but almost covered by spices, banana and a subtle sweetness. Overall a really harmonious rum.
Review by Buddudharma
RumX Advent calendar 18.12.23: On the nose, quite a bit of ester, plus wood and spices. The esters act differently than in Jamaica, I'm more with Mhoba. On the palate, the profile then moves away from the Mhoba bottlings I know and towards classic Jamaica. Somehow I have the feeling the rum might not be ex-bourbon, maybe that's why. My guess: Mhoba, 60%, 4 years tropical.
Review by Benoit Mahe
You find what you love about Hampden with the indulgence (marzipan and tropical fruits) and the esters. A very nice rum where the sherry does not take over but enhances the rum.
Review by Pavel Spacek
Strong, full of taste, but still young ... Hampden, legendarni jamajska destilerka, ktera krome rumu produkuje take alkohol do parfemu. Ve vsech rumech z teto destilerky ucitite divoke estery, po kterych cely vas organizmus nasakne vuni zluteho tropickeho ovoce - manga, papaji, anansu, broskvi. Jeden z rumu, ktere "must try before die"
Review by Alexander Rasch
Eike exciting bottling which lacks some complexity and then shows sharpness on the palate. Sherry storage is very to the point... Compared to the FRC much more balanced and it remains more Hampden over. The Pagos for professionals. Wonderfully dry to the end.
Review by Gil Firth
Bottle One of the good releases for these ages in my opinion. These sherry casks do an excellent job for me. Very very intense full of classic and non-classic impressions. The sherry adds a lot of dirt here. Leather. Chocolate. Esters in quantities. Very tropical under all the spices and sweetness. Very good bottle.
Review by Gregor
Nose: lots of fruit, mango, coconut berries, alcohol only slightly on the nose Palate: Again lots of tropical fruit, pineapple etc. Tobacco, slightly gluey, I like some pepper very much
Review by Michal S
Okay Hampden with a relatively standard profile (tropical fruit, esters), but something is missing on the palate.
Review by Pavel Ungr, RumRock
Vintage 2023. I rate it 8.3 out of 10, very good rum.
Review by Johnny Rumcask
Sherry has clearly left its mark, the Hampden notes only come out in the aftertaste. Significantly better than the Pagos, for me personally the sherry influence is too dominant. Relatively round for its young age, but the alcohol does shine through from time to time.
