Here's the surprise: this cane-juice rum from Reunion leans woodier than you'd expect for an agricole. Ten-plus years in oak give it toasted barrel, dark chocolate and coffee, with peach, raisin and candied orange underneath and a light herbal grassiness. Cask strength at 58%, and the palate turns properly dry and bitter — one taster called it "très gourmand" up front, then tannic and spicy on a long finish.

Compared to the roasty Antoinette #1, this one has more oak, fruit, nuts and caramel sweetness, which makes it rounder and more balanced. I like it a bit better for that reason. Nose 8.6+. However, the mouthfeel then presents itself quite bitter, smoky, spicy accompanied by citrus fruits. Price is a bit higher than the first release series from Isautier, but since demand (fortunately for Isautier fans) seems low, prices will probably fall. That means: reasonable to good.

8,6:On the nose, herbaceous, fresh with tea, fermented tropical fruits like banana, medicinal, toasted oak notes like coffee, pastry, leather, smoky, bacon, spicy with allspice, barrel impact is obvious, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, cocoa, roasted nuts and caramel arise, dried fruits, sugarcane notes, grassy, flowery, some rotten hints, pungency. 8,3:On the palate, the attack is strong, bitter-sweet with toasted oak notes like coffee, nuts, chocolate, spicy with allspice, salty, resinous, dry, sweet with sugar cane honey, mineral, flowery, herbaceous, fruity with citrus, tropical and green fruits. 8,3:The finish is long, dry&tannic, with toasted oak notes, spicy, fermented sugarcane(grassy, flowery, herbaceous) and fruits(dried apricots, grapefruit, bitter orange, raisins), sour.

Tasted the RX13477. This guy is clearly rounder. Nice woody, spicy profile. Then a pleasant herbal Agricole note. The clear winner of the two darlings. But I don't think I'd buy a bottle.

Among the series of 3 bottles, this is the one I put in 2nd place after Louis and Charles. The nose is nice, rather soft and balanced, I found the palate harder and quite spicy. The finish softens on dark chocolate, and a very slight taste of violet.

Round sweetness, nice spice, gallant wood impact - this quality slowly raises Isautier to the new insider tip. We're not going in the direction of the absolute rum Olympus, but for upscale drinking fun, we're in good hands here, even from a price-performance point of view.

I found this new version of Apolonie more convincing than its predecessor. I find it fruitier, with a very pronounced but delicate woodiness. Old rums from Reunion are rarely my favorites, but these Isautier are really nice.

It reminds me a bit of the Reimonenq Prestige 9 years, just less sugar added. Nose on peach, grape. The wood is quite marked. Palate: peach, wood, dried grape, slight candied orange. Finish on the wood. Nice but not crazy either.
