"Très bourbon," as one member put it — and that's the story here. This MHOBA pours glue, solvent and tropical fruit on the nose, then leans honey-sweet with butterscotch, marzipan and a smoky, citrus-bitter edge from the bourbon cask. Several tasters found it the most likable of the three Vibrations, though a few felt the oak flattens it into something a touch one-dimensional.

I like Umganu, Indlovu and Umbila the best of the three. If you fancy a nice, typical Mhoba profile but are afraid of spending money on three rums or want the most pleasing of the three on the nose and palate, you should go for the Umbila. The other two are only needed for a comparison - and even for that, samples are perfectly adequate.

A rum tasted at the WLP. A nose of glue/solvent, tempered by the presence of fruit. Quite smooth on the palate, with smokiness, fruit and a hint of slightly sweet ostia. A very different rum from Indlouu, a little bland in direct comparison.

Already more Mhoba vibes with this rum. It also has quite a medicinal nose, you can detect solvents, esters, and glue. On the palate, slightly sweet thanks to marzipan, but then also a bit fruity with pineapple.

The Mhoba Umbila rum is very expressive as are all Mhoba. The esters are very present from start to finish of the tasting and it does not leave you indifferent. Notes of caramel, butter, honey and fruits make this rum a very pleasant and indulgent drink.

Here is the second Mhoba from the Vibrations trilogy. More typical in the Mhoba profile than the first. Nose: lots of honey and fermented fruit. Included are mango, honeydew melon, passion fruit, raspberry, and intense, sugary maraschino cherry. Soft and creamy. Almost like honey yogurt. Of course, there is also sweet glue and fine esters. The ABV fits very well, no bite, no sting. A bit too sweet for me. 8.2 Palate: the sweetness from the nose does not appear on the palate. Clear entry with esters and pineapple marzipan, quite astringent and bitter at the start, also reminiscent of lemon peel. Behind that, the strong bourbon cask makes itself felt. I like the profile, but I miss the finesse that the brandy cask of the other one brought for me, even though I'm not a fan of finishes. 8.0

The second Mhoba in the Vibration series. It lacks a little complexity. It is more on the estery and sweet side. I miss something there. Certainly also a good bottling, but in direct comparison to the Indlovu it loses out

"Small" Mhoba Cross-Tasting 2025: On the nose lots of glue, lots of solvent, fruit. On the palate come smoke, salt, and marzipan sweetness. Overall somehow too simple and one-dimensional.

Relatively light, oily and estery, closest to the typical character of the distillery. Alcohol well integrated, but a bit too young and uncomplex for my taste.

A typical Mhoba, which clearly benefited from aging in bourbon casks. The ester content is present but does not feel sharp-edged; thanks to the buttery notes, it already feels very round and pleasant on the nose, which is confirmed on the palate by overripe fruit, butterscotch, and also typical notes of grass and mineral influences, a nice bottling!

This rum offers a beautifully smooth and polished nose with combination of esthers and some darker tones like honey, wood, and candied fruits coming through nicely. As for the taste, it’s wonderfully concentrated and full-bodied. Sour fruits, especially citrus and lime, really stand out, giving it a sharp, fresh edge that plays off the sweetness of honey and marmalade. The finish carries that same fruity character with a hint of nuttiness and tonka bean, making for a satisfying medium-length close. Overall, I love how the nose sets a darker, mellow tone while the palate bursts with bold, sour fruit flavors. A solid 8.5/10 in my books.

Ester meets light fruit brandy. On the nose, nicely subtle solvent and ester (like a very light Jamaican). On the tongue then a complete contradiction. Solvent and fruit brandy don't really go together. Quite drinkable and pleasant, but nothing more.

Let it rest about 30 minutes. Compared to Indlovu the aroma is slightly smoother, I'd say more honeyed. Very nice. In taste it also seems gentler and more mature to me. In the finish pleasantly warming vanilla, bourbon and honey. Quite similar to French cask.

Reminds me a lot of the highly toasted barrel I tried from Mhoba (Glass Cask was it?). Blind I would have said new oak. It's really smooth but the barrel influence is too prominent making it one dimensional. I can taste there's something else deep below but it's overwhelmed by the barrel.

Jamaican nose, but light, which is very pleasant compared to the rest of the range! In any case, pleasant, with hints of wood and vanilla. Very soft on the palate, with a cuddly, hugging sensation! Finish on varnish...

This series is somewhat disappointing. The tasting of Umbila will slightly lower the rating of Indlovu which I found below, less pleasant especially. You find the Mhoba typicality but something is missing.

The bourbon cask is very noticeable on the nose and palate all the way to the finish. I mention this feeling first because the dominance of glue/solvent really coats the whole thing, as I often think is the case with this South African distillery. This is my second tasting of Mhoba, the first was a Strand 101 that I already really enjoyed as a fan of funk and Esther. I have to admit that this one brings a lot of roundness and thickness on the palate, which is very pleasant. The alcohol is very well integrated. A very good tasting for me, I just regret that the price of this bottle is so high compared to the 101.

More in your face compared to the indlovu. A heavier blend of solvents, tropical fruits and spices. Bourbon is also quite noticeable. However in the finish I feel the indlovu is slightly more complex.
