Sipped neat at 58.5%, the alcohol stays remarkably tame — no burn, just glue and solvent on the nose that soften into pineapple and honey the longer the glass sits. On the palate it turns creamy and buttery, with licorice, smoke and a woody-spicy edge. One of three MHOBA New Vibrations casks; this bourbon-and-brandy version reads the roundest and sweetest of the set, though the finish tails off short.

Most helpful positive review
A rum tasted at the WLP. Nose of glue/solvents with earth and fruit in the background. The palate is quite lively, with a violent, earthy woodiness, but soon evolves into sweetness, smoke, fat and licorice. The finish is long on licorice and wood, followed by tropical fruit. The empty glass is rich and complex, a very fine rum with great expressiveness.

Different, i.e. closer to South Africa, and somewhat more pleasing than the Umganu (RX17378). Interesting, distinct smoky note, not unlike the smell of the surrounding wooden box. I can confirm the previous average rating of 79 points. Tendency upwards, scraping the 80 points, which means "very good".

A very aromatic Mhoba... I really like it. The mixture of funk (esters/pineapple) and spices with vegetable parts, some wood and honey sweetness fits very well. The alcohol is very well integrated. It is soft and creamy on the palate. Everything fits

Today a small comparison test between the new Mhobas New Vibrations. My conclusion is that none of the 3 bottlings really convinced me completely. However, my ranking would be 1ST RX17377 2. RX17378 3. RX17376

My favorite of the series! Typical Mhoba profile with nice discreet bourbon notes, whereby the fruitiness has not been lost.

Falls a bit in direct comparison with the other two barrels, seems a bit duller and restrained, which does not suit the profile particularly well in my eyes. Nevertheless, still on a great level.

I like Mhoba. By now there are quite a few, and yes, they are all very similar. So here it’s about the fine differences. Here is a 2-year Mhoba with an additional 18 months in an African brandy cask. Nose: Ester and glue, as if Jamaica is in the glass. A good start! Sweetness of pineapple marzipan, with intense sweet-sour kiwi, passion fruit and lemon. With a stronger sniff, vinegar comes in. I think the brandy has made it a bit milder and sweeter. I like it. 8.4 Palate: intense and aromatic. Again esters and glue and the sweetness of pineapple marzipan is back. This time ripe banana joins in. Has a slightly doughy consistency and reminds a bit of brioche and fruit bread. Also woody-spicy, with vanilla and nutmeg and sweet, soft licorice. Very tasty. 8.4 I find the average rating of 7.8 not fitting, because it is nicely compact, with pleasant esters and an unobtrusive sweetness and also with good ABV...

"Small" Mhoba Cross-Tasting 2025: Also here on the nose a lot of glue, a lot of solvent, plus black tea. On the palate, fruit comes in (currants?). Not a bad rum, but it doesn't stand out. Mhoba can do better.

Tasting a Mhoba is not the kind of thing that puts you to sleep! I let my glass air for a good half hour, nearby the esters are overwhelming with a strong solvent smell. Moving the glass away, it dissipates into exotic fruit/pineapple. The mouth is highly concentrated by the esters, but not aggressive. It softens quickly. I no longer find the fruits, but a mix of honey, smoky licorice. Medium sweet finish, a bit of fir honey, licorice, woodiness.

Nose: esters, lively on the nose, ripe tropical fruits somewhat restrained. Cane, a vegetal/earthy side. Palate: light damp wood, slight earthy and smoky, fruits but restrained, a little wild red berries. Alcohol moderately integrated. Short finish, woody, earthy.

For me, among the trio from the Mhoba Vibrations series (Umganu, Umbila, Indlovu), this one tastes the best, pleasant aroma and taste, pineapple and licorice dominate.

A very interesting Mhoba. On the nose I have ester, solvent and generally signs of Jamaica. In the mouth much much more opens up. Little ester and instead tropical fruits, almost creamy. Not bad.

After 20 minutes of rest, the smell is typically mhobic. Bourbon, technicolour, burnt caramel, fruit. First sip quite sharp, but it's good. There are no surprises. The flavor matches the aroma. The honey finish could be longer and it would like to mature.

Lots of fruit like mango and grilled pineapple. Not very complex but pleasant. Also has roasted notes and a bit spicy towards the end. Some woody undertones but turns out a pretty sweet rum.

Today the second tasting. The first time it didn't taste at all and ended with a very average rating. But because I like Mhoba rums, they got a second chance. And it's significantly better. In the scent, I feel esters and glue alternating with fruity aromas. A bit of rum lingering on the tongue evokes an intense taste of cherries in chocolate. A total blast.

Nose : reminds me a lot the latest new Yarmouth from rumclub. It smells new oak and esters. Mouth : alcohol doesn't burn at all, really spicy, nut, caramel, oily, esters not so present anymore, very very pleasant. Final : long, more earthy, esters are coming again
