Sipped neat at 55%, this drinks nothing like the Mount Gay people expect — the alcohol sits well-integrated and the pot still does the talking. Varnish and solvent hit first, then guava, yellow fruit and apple compote roll in, with young wood and warming spice on a dry, roasted finish. 31.08.2025 Retasting at the German Rum Fest 2025. Still like it. -------------- 05.04.2024 Mount Gay Extreme Rare online tasting mit Dirk. Retasting this and still think the price to quality is off. A good rum but just a price tag out of this world. Nose Wood, light roasted, earthy, light sugarcane, light nutts, fruity, pineapple. Palate Round, warm, wood, light roasted, fruity, dried fruit, light chocolate, faint salt, dry. Finish Medium long, roasted wood, dried fruit, light chocolate, light salt, dry. Lively on the nose underlining its relative young age. Young wood and a jam of (fresh) apples and cinnamon come to my mind. This is rather interesting. Also nice on the palate. Doesn’t hide its young age but is quite enjoyable. Some sweetness with coconuts and vanilla. Basket of continental fruits with some cinnamon again. Side note to the (European) pricing: absolutely not worth EUR 350-400 unfortunately imho.

This is quite a successful MG, light and pleasant to drink. The alcohol is very well integrated. The nose is dominated by tart fruits such as a compote of green apple and kumquat and some caramel. Slightly sour fruit on the palate here too. This time more green apple with currants. I also notice coffee and nutty wood. The finish is not too long and is more on the woody side. All in all, a success, but the price... a clear "no" for me.

Rum and chocolate tasting by Rum Club Switzerland. A first nose of almost pure varnish, but immediately the fruit takes over, tropical fruit and yellow fruit (acerola and pear), young wood. The palate is surprisingly smooth and balanced after the varnish nose. Fruit expresses itself freely, supported by light wood. The finish is moderately long but balanced and fruity, with esters expressing themselves with restraint on the finish. A fine rum, expressive and well-balanced, making it very drinkable.

Well, I expected a bit more from this bottling. Probably because of the price, I thought it would be a big hit. Unfortunately, this was not fulfilled at all. It's worth a try, but nothing that really sticks in the memory.

Yellow fruit on the nose, citrus fruit, apple with good acidity, young wood or sawmill, as I know it from Privateer, vanilla, caramel. Roasty and spicy on the palate, nutmeg, slightly peppery on the finish. I like the longer matured MGs like the Rumclub Ed 23 better. In any case, many thanks to Steinhorst for sharing the bottle with history!

I have to say up front that I wasn't a big fan of Mount Gay rums before. Nose: yellow fruits and a little resin, vanilla and cask. All in all, very pleasant and in no way tiring. Oh, somehow 'different' on the palate: very spicy and slightly medicinal with strong roasted aromas. The finish is then mainly roasted, dry and slightly bitter. Definitely interesting, very well integrated alcohol but not my preferred style.

A sample from the Rumfestival 20.09.2024. Intense lacquer and solvent notes. Mount Gay is clearly recognizable in the background - banana bread, vanilla, biscuit, caramel, and fruits. After a while, tropical fruits, especially mango, come forward. Nice, complex spice. A great nose, very complex and interesting. Very oily in the mouth, nice feeling. Caramel, dried fruits, and very spicy. Great drinking strength. Tingling citrus fruits and warming spice on the finish. Super good Mount Gay with edges and corners. Crafted wonderfully. I was very positively surprised by this. 😀

Super unusual mount gay! Subtly reminiscent of rockley 2000/on the other hand, it also reminds me of savanna creole. Olive brine, nutmeg, beeswax, honey, overripe fruit such as guava, banana and fig, plus salty iodine and aniseed. Unusual but pleasant sweetness. Alcohol perfectly integrated. Whether this has to cost almost €400 is another matter. Either way, an exciting experiment with long fermentation.

Good, fruity and herbaceous aroma but still a little young in my opinion. With a little more ageing and melting I can imagine it very well. I wouldn't have guessed Barbados or MG blind, I don't think.

Pub Whiskyplaza Hamburg December 2025. And the last one at Whiskyplaza was unfortunately a very expensive rum :-( Sweetness is also noticeable here, the 55% are well integrated. It's a good rum, but never worth over €300.

These Single Estate MGs show what terroir is. And what different sugarcane varieties make. Great (expensive) series. Nose: full-bodied and round. Super integrated alcohol. Caramelly-malty, woody-fruity. Muted honey sweetness with cocoa powder. Dried apricot and dried date with tropical fruits. And always behind that brown caramel with a slight smoky note. 8.5 Palate: again nicely full and round. Woody-roasty, but rather on the soft, malty side. Clearly bacon-like with umami and tonka bean. Sweetness of molasses, caramel and dark cherry, a bit of nutmeg and maybe a hint of licorice. Really good. 8.5

A very interesting Mount Gay rum, with a lot of floral vibes to it. Very fruity and floral in the nose, with strong hints of pear. The notes gave away a more dried fruit sensation, with hints of tobacco, leather and a lingering oaky taste

The molasses for the two distillates in this rum relaxed completely from sugar cane from own cultivation at Mount Gay - thus the rum carries the single estate label so not only for marketing reasons. Exclusively pot still rum was blended here and result in an appealing play of flavors - differs from the classic, primarily strong-spicy Mount Gay profile, which I personally like because this rum gains complexity. Tasty, though not revolutionarily new.

Very smooth rum, vanilla, and apple come through beautifully on the palate. The fact that this rum is still young is very evident on the palate. For me, the price tag is a bit steep. The aroma is also wonderfully smooth and slightly sweet. The alcohol is well-integrated.

A fabulous nose of caramel, licorice, but also lots of fruit (notably orange, mango, and yellow fruits). A great palate, with lots of fruit and spices, with anise and a varnish added. Very very beautiful bottle. However, not worth its price: 400€ for a 6-year-old (probably aimed at a wealthy clientele). A slightly lower score considering this.

After pouring, the rum spread a strong lacquer note in the nearby area. After a while in the glass, it became pleasantly sweet, caramel, vanilla. Along with young wood and yellow fruits. On the palate, this continues, but it feels very approachable and elegant. The lacquer from the nose comes through only lightly on the palate, instead more fruit.

Green grape, lemon, honey sweetness, but also relatively high acidity. The fine, fruity, more subtle flavors come to the fore and less the strong, spicy notes that I have known from Mount Gay so far.

One of the highlight of wlp 2023, it was simply amazing and really expressive of what mount gay can produce. The nose was a bit thin but yet tasty, really similar to the magnum series mount gay I love. The price tag, unfortunately, is too high for the quality delivere

Hanse Spirit 2024 Tasty, but quite different from the other Mount Gays. On the nose lemon and yellow fruits. On the palate quite light in mouthfeel, taste-wise spicy-roasty, a bit resinous. Not quite what I love about Mount Gay but definitely interesting and tasty. I wouldn't pay the price for a whole bottle though.

I was excited to try this one. Really excellent nose, pot still distillate, guava and sugar, a cracking nose. The mouth is a little less refined, pot still notes, some honey and walnut, which builds into intense spice. Finish is dry and moorish, more reminiscent of some of the Habitation Velier MG bottlings, again spice and some balanced dry baking spices. It feels a bit brash and young, less caramel and classic Mount Gay notes. Overall good but not excellent so excited to see what is to come

Mount Gay Bn-Qa 55 Nose of olives and fruits A little smoke too, we've left Mount Gay! A hint of saffron? With lemon. Tobacco and caramel? I'm lost! It's crazy. Round, candied palate, dried apricots, red fruits, a bit of apple? Super fruity but quite thick. Quite a marked spicy finish. 8.6?!

Rather restrained on the nose, I smell slight caramel and some wood. On the palate then quite a lot of wood, which also brings good spice. Caramel and sweetness, then some bitterness from the wood. The alcohol is well integrated, quite round already. Overall, not much happens for me. Medium-length finish, leaving a slight bitterness at the end. For me, no comparison to the Foursquare ECS releases, which are clearly in a different league here.

The nose seems relatively classic and not very interesting. The palate completely contrasts and brings much more complexity on a Jamaican profile with a Barbadian style. The result is a rather nice rum, with packaging I like but whose price is quite far from the quality.

Tasted at the UK RumFest alongside the single estate second edition. The second edition was better and this one was good, but not special enough to justify the price tag. At around 5 years of aging it is still relatively young and not distinct enough to stand out. I appreciate the story behind the rum and it’s great that Mount Gay are putting effort into doing everything on site. As an aside I was lucky enough to meet Trudiann Branker there and she was great - very friendly and chatty.

Bought directly from the distillery, at first I was reticent given the price but eventually gave in. On the nose and in the mouth you immediately feel those explosive, uncompounded notes typical of Pot still distillation. The finish is not very long however it is consistent. Is it worth 400USD? Hard to say, but if we think about the costs and the investment made to be able to produce 100% local rums then I would say probably yes.
