Most tasters feel the Islay finish swallows the Caroni whole — one calls it "Whisky not rum," all peat, tar and burnt rubber, with the tropical distillate barely surviving. A minority love it exactly for that: those who enjoy smoky Islay whisky find the peat, malt and dry, burnt palate works. Bottled at a hot 63%, it's a whisky drinker's rum more than a rum lover's.

#6807 18.05.2026 Training is done and my wife has been picked up from work so time for a few samples. Watching Gold Rush on HBO. This is a bottling that will split waters and also a bottling that will make Whisky drinkers happy. Classic Caronie noters hit with a salty, peaty and smoky punch. The palate is dry and has a burnt note to it.

If I was to have tasted blindly I would have said Laphroaig! The Islay whisky finish has just taken over unfortantly, there is some kind of sweetness in the background but nothing Caroni. As an Islay whisky I give it 7.5 to 8. As a rum it's below 7 for sure. Just too far removed from what it's meant to be. Even on the finish, all I'm getting is peaty like notes.

And there was also a Caroni, unfortunately no decent picture either. But as already mentioned, it doesn't have much to do with Caroni, whisky is way too noticeable here. A shame for the good stuff.

Drinkable without question. But it no longer has anything to do with a rum, let alone Caroni. Unfortunately, the finish completely overshadows it, so that not much of the origin can be recognized. Perhaps just right for smoky whiskey fans.

8,4:On the nose, Islay whisky barrel impact is very obvious, with smokiness, burnt notes like rubber, bbq, the wood is roasted with dark chocolate, roasted nuts, spicy vanilla, baking spices, confectionery, winterly, intermingling with industrial notes like tar, solvents, citrus fruits fly underneath. On aeration, dark chocolate might be cocoa, salty tones are present, stronger fruitiness arises with berries, yellow fruits. 8,3:On the palate, the attack is a bit hot, connected with Islay finish and notes like peat, burnt rubber, bbq, bacon, sea spray, smokiness and malt.The wood is roasted with nuts, cream toffee, buttery, spicy with vanilla, baking spices, as the fruits are dried, yellow and berries, the molasses is earthy, herbaceous, flowery, with minty hints and black tea...on oxidation, it becomes slightly bitter. 8,4:The finish is long, dry&tannic, oily, with Islay finish notes nicely complementing typical Caroni marks..

A strange nose with pastry sweetness, fruit, but also notes of smoke and sewing machine oil. Deviant flavors too, peaty whiskey, medicine, and solvents. One wonders where the rum is here, as the palate is clearly dominated by peaty whiskey, with medicine notes that linger. Smoky wood too. A cabin deep in a dark forest with a peat fire burning inside. The finish is rather short, except for the smoky wood aromas, which linger for a long time. Not much to enjoy here, in my opinion.

This was the one rum I have in my collection I was the most nervous about - previous experience of ex-Islay cask matured rums haven’t been overly great where the cask utterly dominated the spirit in it however this one does fight back and you can taste some of the rum through the ex-Islay whisky notes The nose is a little bite-y and nippy (combination of Caroni and high ABV I’m putting that down to) however there is a gentle waft of peat smoke but nothing like huffing down a dirty, young smoke bomb like some Islay whiskies! You also get some oakiness and a spicy nature to it as well - weird to say it smells heavy, thick and creamy!! Must be that distillate battering through the cask influences! On the palate, it’s equally complex - it starts gentle then the longer it sits on your palate, it heats up and unleashes the spiciness on your tongue! Ground/white pepper, baking spices that tickle the tongue! There’s a little peat and malt notes in their but they absolutely play second fiddle to the rum, more like a supporting act. Finally there is a little fruitiness at the back of the palate of what I suspect is Sherry cask (raisins, dried fruits etc) Finish is medium to long All in all, this an unexpected excellent rum - it’s my first bottle of Caroni I now own and now looking forward to improving the relationship with my bank manager to help fund future purchases…. It appears I love Trinidad rum!

When I saw the other reviews I thought it couldn't be that bad - wrong. This rum was probably forgotten in the whisky cask. On the nose, the Caroni still harmonizes relatively well with the Islay cask, but then it gets worse. The base product is still clearly recognizable, but it would have been better off in any other cask. Still, a must try for fans of Caroni and peaty whiskies.

A whisky with a particularly pungent alcohol. Too bad, we were supposed to taste a rum with a whisky finish. But here, it doesn't work. I don't know if the original juice was bad and needed this kind of strong finish or if it's just plain wasteful, but in either case, it's a failure.

Blind tasting. On the nose, coconut, glue, caramel, and leather. On the palate, it reminds me more of a Guyana rum with a spicy kick on tropical fruits, somewhat like TDL or Clarendon. After several sips, both on the nose and palate, strong rubber notes come through. I get more of an Islay finish at the very end of the palate and especially in the empty glass. Pretty nice.

Quite heavy on the palate, it reminds a lot of whisky, you can really feel the strong Caroni influence, the finish gives a very special touch
