The red wine cask is the twist here: it layers cherry, prune and dark-fruit sweetness over a light El Salvador base, alongside vanilla, caramel and toasted hazelnut. A sweet rum. On the nose, a vanilla scent. On the palate, the alcoholic side comes out in a well-controlled way then reveals banana notes. A round and comforting rum.

Light sweetness, red fruits, wine notes, floral and somehow a disturbing note of cardboard. This is somehow not my thing at all, but I'm also not a fan of wine finishings. Transparency: free sample as part of the Rum-X Masterclass.

Masterclass mit Alexandre Gabriel am 04.04.2024. Plantation wird Planteray. Alles in allem ein trinkbarer Rum. Für das was es beim Tasting sonst noch gab, eher im vorderen Drittel mit einzuordnen. Aber leider nicht das, wo ich unbedingt Nachschub bräuchte davon.

At first I thought, well, Spanish style, won't give me much. But then I liked the rum as a starter in the evening quite well. Slight coconut note, which I wouldn't have expected from Venezuela, but also a bit sharp, so alcohol could be better integrated.

An der Nase zeigt sich der Rum leicht, süß und fruchtig. Die alkoholische Note verfliegt schnell. Am Gaumen nicht optimal eingebundener Alkohol, Früchte und Würze. Insgesamt recht leicht. Das ändert sich zum Nachklang hin. Hier trumpft der Rum mit intensiver Würze und Fassnoten. In Summe ganz passabel und geeignet um Rum aus El Salvador kennen zu lernen, nicht mehr und nicht weniger.

The next acceptable Plantation. Here we have a rather sweet nose, vanilla and caramel, but hazelnut is also noticeable. On the palate, some chocolate comes through, but I find it a bit too alcoholic, still good.

#4683 04.04.2024 Online tasting wit RumX and Plantaray. Nose Light, sweet, intense, prunes, light caramel, fruity. Palate Round, sweet, fruity, spice, light caramel, light spicy, citrus, medium dry. Finish Medium long, light wood, spices, light citrus, faint caramel, medium dry. The empty glass had very light floral notes and vanilla.

The harmonious nose of this Spanish rum is unfortunately a bit weak for 49%. On the palate, the rum convinces with more intensity, strong and complex enough. The only downside is the alcoholic sharpness in the mouth and finish.

Again, having this half blind with only knowing the origin, not the cask or ABV. I expected and got a rum more on the lighter side, which came true especially for the nose. Additionaly I got already a bit more alcoholic sharpness there which then translated to the palate: intense and a bit sharp, coming mainly from the alcohol. There was some fruit (I guess the wine cask finish) which I did not expect in this form at the Spanish style rum. It is also on the sweeter side, as most of the product range. It was easy to drink, but also more driven by the maturation in the wine cask and the higher ABV than the rum's own body. A bit different and thus interesting, and I believe a good fit for Plantations/Planterays target audience.

RumX masterclass Planteray, 4.4.24, live with Alexandre Gabriel. After-tasting. Nose: very fruity, almost flowery. Passion fruit with papaya and mandarin with orange. Also violet scent. Caramel and toffee with vanilla give a good amount of sweetness. It also has a slight dosage. I can’t find the red wine cask (but I’m slightly congested). Too sweet, but nice. 7.4 Palate: fruity-spicy and dry-sweet. Unfortunately seems a bit watered down and thin. Vanilla with nutmeg finds apple and cherry. Some cask influence as well. Overall solid but rather unspectacular. 7.0

Planteray/Plantation RumX Online Masterclass: Some roasted hazelnuts and light red wine notes on the nose, unfortunately also a bit alcoholic... On the palate, you can clearly recognize the pineau des charentes finish. Raisin, hazelnut, caramel, light tannins, overall quite thick, sweetish, strong and heavy but for me overall too sweet and the finish dominates too much. Also, the alcohol is not well integrated and the sugar just massively bothers me, sorry.

The Pineau des Charentes finish works well, the rum is extremely rounded - maybe almost a bit too much. The El Salvador profile typically doesn't produce complexity monsters, so the heavy fruity sweetness fits well aromatically as a complement. The rum is undoubtedly easy to drink and pleasant - but don't expect a big spectacle here.

El Salvador, at first does not suggest a distinctive character. Maybe the red wine cask helps? Short answer: No. A very unspectacular rum, which had to be sweetened with 6g sugar and is still slightly sharp. The red wine is recognizable in hints, but only very lightly.

Maybe a bit better overall than the Belize. The red wine finish is quite successful. Unfortunately, the slightly too intrusive sweetness bothers me again in the overall picture. However, the hazelnut notes go well with the wine finish.

Very sweet, both on the nose and on the palate. Overall too one-dimensional and unexciting. Towards the end, an alcoholic aftertaste comes through too strongly. Certainly quite good for your entry.

Gentle nose on vanilla & slight nuttiness. On the palate a nice creaminess, but gets a bit spicy. The wine cask is rather present with heavy notes, dark fruits and rather sweet. Puts a pretty contrast on the light distillate, but feels a bit disconnected. Rather short finish. Nice sipper, but nothing high class.

A bottling from the RumX Advent Calendar 2025. Both on the nose and on the palate you can experience typical notes of the Spanish style. In my opinion, a bottling that is perfect for beginners, rather boring for advanced drinkers.

Planteray RumX masterclass 04.04.24 Dieser single cask aus El Salvador zeigt sich sehr gefällig. Fruchtig in der Nase Richtung Kirsche, der Einfluss des Red pineau des charentes ist klar wahrnehmbar. Am Gaumen sehr süffig, mir etwas zu sauer.

Spanish nose with vanilla, caramel, wood, nuts and column alcohol (not the good kind) with a nice grape and raisin note as well as nuts. Not bad, but nothing special either. On the palate, the unpleasant sweetness of the dosage comes in immediately with a less than optimal alcohol note. Unfortunately nothing for me although the fruit note of the grape and the nuts are nice. But unfortunately the sugar ruins everything.

Planteray RumX Masterclass by Alexandre 04.04.2024: I find the wine cask finish quite pleasant here. The fruity notes that come with it fit quite well. The base spirit itself was probably solid as well. But overall a bit too sweet.

Very nice fruity nose. You can notice a bit of the red wine, but the finish stays positive. Only the alcohol comes through a bit sharp. On the palate pleasantly roasty-nutty with the fruit in the background.

A sweet rum with lots of vanilla on the nose. On the palate more barrel influence with some bitterness and spices. Short finish. Easy sipping is the big thing here. Works without sparking much enthusiasm.

Nice nose, typical Chihuatan notes (nut, caramel,...). The nose is then almost completely overshadowed in taste by the Cognac. The Cognac is a bit too dominant... too bad, the Chihuatan gets lost there. Alcohol could also be better integrated.

On The Rocks: On the nose it is very mild with a slight spice, oak and mild red wine. Taste reveals a very strong spice and oak hit up front followed by a sweetness with some fruit and floral notes. The sweetness fades into a more oak with bitterness ramping up into the finish. Finish is strong with the spice hanging in there for a long time with the oak and bitterness in the background and a lingering chest warmth. This tastes nothing like the aroma and can be very deceiving. Mixed Pepsi Zero: On the nose musky pepsi zero. Taste is a sweet Pepsi zero with a little fruity notes. Finish is short. This is not aweful mixed but would be a waste to mix it.

Light start, nutty, chocolaty and with a hint of citrus on the nose. Red wine note is noticeable. Comes across very round and sweet. On the palate first chocolaty, citrusy middle, then the cask comes through. I like it, but it is a bit narrow-chested in the second half for the bite in the alcohol note. Dry red wine note in the finish.
