The Islay malt cask buries the Diamond distillate under peat, smoke, ash, salt and bacon, with only faint coconut, fruit and brown sugar peeking through. 8:On the nose, the first impression we get is smoky, ashy, but much more restrained as in real Islay whisky.Subtle notes of iodine, sulphur are paired with dried fruits.A hint of bacon also creeps in, some cinnamon, beeswax, slightly burnt cloves, a hint of vanilla. The wood is charred with caramel, chocolate, roasted nuts, some burnt sugar, very creamy, oily. The molasses is vegetal with herbal, grassy, minty notes. 8,3:On the palate, the attack is powerful with cold smoke like from a burnt-out cigar, salt, tobacco, leathery tones, some smoked bacon again, plus typical rum notes of brown sugar, fruit and a hint of coconut in the background, very oily and round.The molasses is vegetal, a bit bitter with herbal, minty notes and black tea.The wood is roasted and toasted, spicy with candied caramel, chocolate, nuts, perhaps nougat.Tasty and creamy. 8,2:The finish is long with light smoke, charred wood notes like chocolate, candied caramel, nuts.The fruits are dried, the rum dry, musty. Nose: peat, burnt sugar. Palate: I can't drink it after the first sip because this thing doesn't taste like rum at all, but only like Islay whisky. Goes down the drain. Because of the somewhat interesting nose, still 40 points. Addendum: A fitting example of how rough-dominant whisky from Islay is and how it can ruin any rum. Conclusion: stay away from such experiments! (Tried myself: Islay whisky is like a constrictor snake and aromatically even beats Hampden-DOK in the end if you mix both.)

Yes baby, definitely a really awesome Plantation. Endless wood, but that was to be expected. Well, this rum is very smoky anyway. Wood is mostly what you taste here. Definitely very tasty.

On the nose still somewhat more balanced than on the palate, overall aromatic and in my opinion clearly closer to a whisky than a rum. Maybe whisky lovers judge differently here, but I still struggle with this type of barrel aging because the resulting hybrid doesn't really open up to me: Why should I buy a Guyana rum disguised as whisky and not just switch directly to the corresponding spirit category? These thoughts reflect only my personal view, in which there is a clear subjective preference for rum. From a whisky lover's perspective, the verdict might be completely different.

Hmm, if I want whisky taste, I also reach for whisky and not rum aged in whisky casks. Strictly speaking, almost all rums age in whisky casks - in bourbon casks. This one aged in an Islay whisky cask. It's a matter of taste, not my thing. However, I admit, for what it is, it's not bad. Good candidate for a submarine in a whisky tasting 😁. Addition: Unfortunately again with noticeable added sugar.

Nose: no bueno! This is pure nasty peated whisky. Palate: Better! Still very much dominated by peat. On the second half there are notes of the rum and some sweetness coming through. Still not for me, clearly. Thanks to Alexandre and the RumX Team for the masterclass!

Masterclass with Alexandre Gabriel on 04.04.2024. Plantation becomes Planteray. My absolute worst rum of this tasting. Even if the idea to create something like this is well meant, it's just not my world at all. You either love it or you don't. Personally, I hate it. Sorry.

RumX masterclass Planteray, 4.4.24, live with Alexandre Gabriel. Post-tasting. Nose: well, the finish is clear. The one year in the Islay cask clearly sets the tone. At first almost exclusively sweet, peaty whisky. Only behind that comes a little green apple and some coconut. Seems a bit creamy-buttery. Nice for whisky lovers, for me too little rum. 6.6 Palate: could also be a peaty whisky. Besides the overpowering smoke there is only very little room for spicy sharpness of salt and pepper, and maybe some currant. A pity about the 9 years in the Cognac cask. Nothing comes through from that anymore. Neither whisky nor rum in my eyes. 6.2

Guyana plus smoke, that's wild. Smoky, bacon-like, somewhere broken through by fruit and minimal mint. Much sweeter than expected, then Guyana, and at the back comes the smoke. And how. Still sweet, but basically you are standing right in the smoke chamber. Wild. And great if you like that. The finish remains similar, smoke and sweetness that can't quite agree. Personally, I like that very much, but I also understand anyone who completely drops out here.

#4686 04.04.2024 Online tasting wit RumX and Plantaray. Nose Wood, light anise, plum, spice, light medicinal, peat, light smoke. Palate Light, peat, sweet, light wood, fruity, smoke, light salt. Finish Medium long, light wood, peat, smoke, berries, light nutts. The empty glass has some mint and light cinnamon.

Sweet, spicy, peaty on the nose. Actually quite pleasant. On the palate then really 'peated' the rum doesn't offer much more. Maybe this bottling would get better scores at WhiskyX. I'd say worth trying once but I don't need it again 😀

Rum combined with peated whisky has never really worked for me. On the nose it almost fits here at first, but on the palate you almost only taste Islay. Not for me.

Since I also like to drink whisky from time to time, I actually like the rum quite well. But it definitely has nothing to do with rum. I couldn't recognize anything typical of Guyana. Clearly better as an example is The Rum Cask Jamaica with Laphroaig finish.

RumX Masterclass with Alexandre Gabriel. Hmm, here the "finish" unfortunately drowns out any rum. The earthy peatiness combined with creamy malt sweetness leaves little of the actual distillate. Shame about the good rum :(

The bars newest rum-edition at the point of tasting. Spicy and slightly peated in the nose. In the notes it's very peated, with some hints of berries and molasses. Even the bartender was unsure if it was rum or whisky at the first go

What is this? Somehow no longer rum! Feels like we have the rinse water of an ashtray in the glass. Pure smoke and if anything, whisky aroma. This is supposed to be rum? Alexandre explains his thoughts on this bottling, this love-or-hate rum. And as he talks, he also shows us the change of this stuff: the longer it stays in the glass, the more the smoke fades, the whisky suddenly becomes somewhat rum! Subtle fruitiness that some whisky drinkers would like appears here. Not my thing, but because it's so extreme, it still gets 70 points; taste-wise I'm below that!

The finish basically overwhelms everything. In my opinion, you don't really taste a Guyana Diamond. But since I like a smoky finish now and then, it's quite drinkable and solid for me.

For me, the cask completely overwhelms the rum. If you like Islay, you'll surely be happy here. Unfortunately, it's not my thing. Alcohol well integrated and occasionally a light fruit note shines through.

Planteray/Plantation RumX Online Masterclass: Still relatively fruity on the nose after a little breathing time, with the whisky in the background. On the palate, there is a lot of bacon, smoke, peat, strong roasted aromas and some salt and black pepper. For me, unfortunately, there is clearly too much whisky influence and the finish is therefore too dominant. Overall also clearly too sweet. Too bad.

The influence of the Islay malts is very dominant. Upon entering the mouth, a peaty smoke bomb explodes. Only after a lot of chewing does a bit of rum come through. Not my thing. Way too smoky and peaty. The finish completely overwhelms the rum, a pity! Tastes almost like whiskey, so why choose a rum? Finish okay, but if the end product doesn't taste like rum anymore, it makes no sense. Total failure...

Absoluter Spalterrum, hate it or love it. Die Nachreifung im Whiskyfass dominiert den Rum komplett. Blind hätte ich wahrscheinlich auf einen rauchigen Whisky getippt. Der Rum ist eher die Hintergrundmusik mit Kokosnuss, etwas gelben Früchten. Vom Guyanan Profil ist quasi nichts wahrzunehmen. Rauchiger Abgang. Die Frage nach der Zielgruppe ist berechtigt: Rumliebhabet werden enttäuscht sein, Whiskyliebhabet ist es ggf nicht genug. Für mich eine gelungene Kombination aus beiden Welten. Planteray RumX Masterclass by Alexandre 04.04.2024: One thing upfront: the whisky notes diminish a bit if you leave the glass overnight. But even then, hardly anything comes through from the rum. And unfortunately it's a whisky type I don't like. Overall not really my thing...

Well... Not for me! I am not a fan of islay cask matured Rum. I taste ash and more ash. The smell is quite promising, but the taste... Alas not as bad as others like this I already tasted, but again the ash does mute all fruit that might be there. I guess it has its fans, but not me.

Masterclass with Alexandre Gabriel from Plantation Rum. Although this is one of the unsweetened rums and from Guyana (actually a home game)... it's really neither smellable nor drinkable. If I want whisky, I'll get whisky. Unfortunately, I can't drink this.

Argh, what happened here? :-( Completely exaggerated how much the aging influences the base spirit. Guyana base? Doesn't matter, you can't taste it anymore anyway. I like roasted notes, but having a piece of coal in your mouth - no thanks.

Plantation Tasting April 4: No, no, no... The Guyana rum is completely destroyed here by an overpowering Islay... Unfortunately a failure. For a rum drinker it's nothing because it's almost unrecognizable and a whisky drinker would rather reach for the original.

Da isses wieder..,das furchtbare Whiskeyfass. Bäh…Lieben oder Hassen. In der Nase hatte ich noch Agarve und ein bisschen - vermutlich - Islay Whiskey. Aber die Zunge hat den Whiskey. Dann gnadenlos nach vorne gebracht. Der wandert in den MaiTai…zu mehr taugt er nicht. Weil ich nett bin bekommt er noch ein „trinkbar“.

Ahhh.... do I have to reach 200 characters? Too much peat. Especially on the palate. The cask killed the rum. Could definitely be used for a whisky tasting. Otherwise only for lovers of rums with strong single malt influence.

It is per usual with these peated casks, I could not tell you what the distillate is that is totally overpowered by the cask which almost seemed like a very wet cask. Who would want this? Seriously? If you want peated whisky buy one...
