"Dark chocolate rum. I love it" is the short version — this is essentially melted Toblerone at 54%. Cocoa, milk chocolate, vanilla and a little orange peel, all wrapped in serious sweetness from the cacao-cask finish. The higher proof keeps it from going full liqueur, but nobody's calling this subtle. Chocolate lovers melt for it; anyone else finds it one-note.

This rum is something special! 12 years in bourbon barrels with a finish in barrels that were filled with cocoa, which is why you get the full flavor of chocolate here. Unfortunately, there is also a little alcoholic spiciness.

Wow the smell. Dark chocolate, chocolate pudding like grandma's times. The smell promises so much and then comes the awakening. In the mouth just strongly alcoholic. Okay, it's 54%. So at first no chocolate in the mouth anymore. It just burns. Only afterwards does the chocolate come back. A bit better on the second and third sip.

Orange peel, vanilla and spice are overwhelmed by the chocolate. Powerful aromas of dark chocolate, cocoa, vanilla, and roasted wood. The 54% ABV is surprisingly well integrated and provides an intense yet pleasant mouthfeel. Despite the very sweet character, it offers a lot of flavor and a convincing price-enjoyment ratio.

This is a very sweet rum, a dessert in itself. This tastes like you melted down a Toblerone bar and added alcohol to the mix. This can only be enjoyed by those with a high tolerance for sweetness. Personally this one is a struggle for me and always has been, even when I enjoyed sweet, dosed rum more. I will give credit for the 54% ABV - I can’t imagine how cloying this would be if bottled at 40% with the same rich sweetness. But don’t be fooled, this one goes down easier and has less heat than any 54% ABV rum I have personally encountered.

Rum for dessert? Why not, actually. Not a typical representative of the "goes well with dark chocolate rums", the rum IS dark chocolate. One immediately thinks of Spiced Rum here and for me it is definitely a fun rum but can be quite tasty if you are in the mood for chocolate rum. The alcohol is relatively well integrated.

Exciting very chocolaty nose.taste disturb the 30g sugar here surprisingly little, is probably the higher alcohol content. Otherwise, the chocolate continues to pull through.The could do very well in cocktails!

This is something for lovers of sweet things. In the nose mainly nougat, cocoa, and vanilla. In taste mainly nougat and sugar. For me, a big pity that it isn't less sweetened. Otherwise, the alcohol level is just right. Not really for drinking on its own because of the sugar, but I take it as an aperitif.

I like it. This cocoa bomb tastes delicious on its own and is also versatile in the kitchen. Rumolkugeln are insanely good with him. But also in drinks prima usable. I recently treated myself to a chocolate old fashioned in a bar. Was a totally relaxed drink. A great product👍

It has a heavy aroma of dark chocolate, warm cream and a bit of citrus, and a warm taste of chocolate and cocoa. The taste is distinctive with a mild hint of orange.

Alcoholic and chocolatey on the nose, you can also tell it gets sweet. On the palate definitely sweet, the chocolate more subtle than expected. Because there is also a lot of spice from the cask. The 54% really does it good!

This one is already borderline sweet. Smells and tastes very much of caramel and sugar. Not as bad as A.H. Riise and Don Papa, but unfortunately goes strongly in that direction and completely misses my taste.

Chocolate all the way and those 54 abv. can be definitely felt and it is a good thing that it has this kind of strength because otherwise the sweetness would be overpowered. So with this abv it is really nicely balanced. The nose is all chocolate as well as palate with hints of vanilla and lot of spice, mostly black pepper. I have compared it directly with Aurhentico Nativos overproof and I have to say this one is pulling the shorter end. It is nice when on its own but side by side the AN is much better therefore after retasting I am pulling points down. Finish is not very long, more like short-medium.

The nose has lots of hazelnut and dark chocolate. There's also some creamy nougat and an earthy note lingering in the background. A very sweet palate with a massive hit of chocolate, but sweet milk chocolate, not dark like the nose. There's also some vanilla, hazelnut, orange and brown sugar notes. Reminds me of drinking a chocolate orange flavoured hot chocolate. The finish is a touch warming. Just remembering the ABV at this point. Doesn't last too long and keeps to the chocolate theme. A super chocolate forward rum. I think I'd work well in a Mai Tai. To drink neat, it's possibly a bit too sweet, not unpleasant though. Maybe just have the one.

My RumRatings review from 6 years ago: First a fun fact: My first bottle of Companero slipped out of the tube when I was getting out of the car because I was holding it the wrong way, and shattered on the floor without me being able to try it first. So unfortunately I had to order a second one right away... Right after opening it’s clear what the rum has to offer. Strong notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, and hazelnut pour out of the bottle and glass. It’s worth letting the rum breathe. There are definitely more cask notes coming through as well. The alcohol gives a certain sharpness but, due to the dominant chocolate note, it’s quite pleasant on the palate. When drinking, the rum shows very powerfully what it already promised on the nose. Intensely chocolaty, almost creamy on the tongue. The alcohol warms everything up and unfolds the aromas in the mouth. If the rum has other flavors, they have a hard time presenting themselves here. Cask notes with a bit of spice are noticeable. The finish stays sweet with a bit more nut and also some wood. The finish isn’t long but it’s okay. Clearly, this rum is a matter of taste. I’m also honest that I have a problem believing that no additives were used here. At least I’d be interested to know how the bottler managed to make a 12-year-old rum so creamy and intense with chocolate notes. Must be some crazy casks. Very likely it was inoculated here.

Great rum for its money! The nose gets the full chocolate package. Simply an easy sipping rum for beginners but also for advanced drinkers. Really fun. Espresso Martini would also be an option 😉

Give it time to breathe and warm it a bit with your hands, then it shows the ultimate chocolate-cocoa explosion. Velvety soft, mild and round... it's just fun to taste this rum.

Very good stuff. Absolute cocoa bomb with hazelnut. A bit of alcohol in the taste, although the 54% is well integrated. Warm, long finish. Surely also works well in an Espresso Martini. Recommended!

The nose is clearly focused on cocoa. This infusion of cocoa beans directly made in the barrel did its job! It is very hot and pastry-like. You find a bit of citrus and vanilla notes but it's cocoa galore right in your nose! On the palate, the alcohol is barely noticeable despite the 54%, it's very round and soft. Again, almost only cocoa, it's a very monolithic rum, if you don't like cocoa, better leave quickly! You find some notes of orange, vanilla and caramel. Unfortunately, it's too sweetened with additives.

Intensely chocolaty flavor of real cocoa. Quite sweet, but fits the product and thus almost the perfect dessert rum. Or conclusion of a tasting. Also found it exciting that such a rum is bottled with such a high alcohol content!
