Aged-agricole drinkers who like the wood turned up will feel at home here. Nearly ten years in French oak has pushed this Martinique cask-strength rum toward tannin, cinnamon, allspice and candied fruit, with a honeycomb sweetness and a light nail-polish note poking through. One taster compared the oak to good cognac. A couple found it a touch too woody and grassy for their taste, but most called it one of the nicer HSEs.

An HSE quite different from what I know from this distillery. Here, the nose is spicy, woody and on dried fruits. But on the palate, it's clearly the wood that takes over. It's dark, tannic. The cinnamon is well present. The fruits have almost disappeared, only a timid acidity remains. A slight bitterness at the end of the mouth, well dosed. A well-aged agricole, with a very pleasant punch. It's good.

Oh man, yes this rum is really top. So on the nose you almost only have wood or oak or barrel. Otherwise this rum is very tasty on the palate. Wood, pepper, cinnamon and oak are definitely recognizable.

Dried fruit and wine on the nose with a hint of vanilla On the palate there is initially some wood, then cinnamon and honey, then some fruit at the end but only very subtle. There is a bitterness at the end.

A somewhat older HSE. Balanced in the nose. Slightly acidic French Oak. Gentle. Grapes. Velpon (Nail Polish). Taste: the Oak is obviously reminding me of good Cognac/armagnac. Yet, compared to some younger HSE, it end pleasantly dry and oaky. Licorice. Bay leaf. Very nice. One of the nicest HSE I tried.

It needs a bit of time to open up and stabilize. Afterwards, you immediately find yourself in Martinique, no doubt. The nose and palate are perfectly coherent. The woodiness is controlled throughout the tasting, offering a nice structure. The fruits are candied and accompanied by spices, especially cinnamon, which reminds me of baked apples. A beautiful bottle. Edit: the nose is rather closed, even iodized. The attack is on the same vein. But the palate develops very pleasantly. The woody structure is really well done and accompanies the tasting without ever showing a woody juice side.

HSE just knows how. An outstanding Agricole. The nose is incredibly balanced and intense with grass, citrus, honey and wood, the palate barrel-heavy, with wet wood and spice, and in the finish some fresh menthol comes through. That’s fun and varied. That’s fun. Top.

I was eager to discover this bottle from HSE and well, not disappointed! Complex on the nose, many intertwined notes present. Spices, wood, a pastry side with caramel and vanilla, it makes you want to dive in. Well integrated cask strength, no problem with the proof, particular attack, complex and hard to dissect for me. Followed by notes of candied fruits, salted butter caramel (original), a cigar/woody side and blond tobacco. Finish on noble wood and tobacco, quite warm. A beautiful discovery.
