Surprising how well the 57.1% hides — most tasters expected a burn that never really arrives. It's the everyday Eclipse turned up: brown sugar, honey and caramel with dark chocolate, peppery spice and a little banana and pineapple in the back. The nose splits people (some get musky wood and cardboard), but the palate is where it earns its keep.

Most helpful positive review
Vanilla, brown sugar and dried fruits leading up the nose, it’s round and sexy. It’s well balanced on the palate, the alcohol is integrated, dark chocolate, honey and peppery spiciness hanging around. The finish is medium long and mostly about chocolate and spice. I liked the balance of this rum, especially at this ABV.

#5617 31.08.2025 Mount Gay Tasting at the German Rum Fest 2025. I have been starting out with Mount Gay Eclipse back in 1980 in Rum'n'Coke at the disco. Yes, back then there wasn't too many rules about age and also rarely trouble outside like today. Had a nice talk to the guy from the producer about rum and why they changed the shape of the bottle. I complained about it ans he told me that the new design fits in a pants pocket. When they have festivals they drin straight from the bottle and thus they made it fit to a pocket in your pants. Very good because the normal Eclipse gets a lift up in quality. Fruity with nice chocolate and caramel notes. Very little wood and tannins. Banan and pineapple slides out from the back with nice spices. Abd pretty well integrated and it's a bit spicy. I would like to have s whif at the empty glass after an hour or so because I'm pretty sure it would be full of vanilla, chocolate and caramel. Price to quality is extremely good and this is not only a mixer, it can go neat as well.

Hanse Spirit Hamburg February 2026. Next up is the Mount Gay stand. First, a rather young rum, which I find a bit too alcoholic. Otherwise, a light sweetness, brown and burnt sugar, honey, and caramel are noticeable.

Great new addition from Mount gay. Absolutely fair price-performance ratio for 30€, certainly goes really well in some cocktails. Alcohol surprisingly well integrated. Great overall package what you get here!

GRF 2025: Great Mount Gay tasting at the GRF: vanilla, brown sugar, and dried fruit on the nose, round and seductive. On the palate, moderately balanced with dark chocolate, honey, and peppery spice. Medium-long finish, fitting for this ABV. Probably usable as a mixer, too harsh neat.

Reminds me a bit of Hamilton 151. Slight pepper on the finish. Not a lot of burn for such a high ABV. Nose is sugar, woody, alcohol. A bit of banana and other typical fruit. Really well balanced.

Often requested here, now finally an official Mount Gay bottling in Navy Strength, even if only in the entry-level segment, it's still a pleasing development. They are getting a bit bolder there too. While it doesn't quite please at the nose yet, the palate suggests that this is a very interesting mixer. Brings enough fruit and spice to shine in a cocktail. Nice package at a fair price. Keep it up.

The nose is quite musky. Wood and old cardboard mainly, not as horrid as it sounds, but admittedly not pleasing. There are also distant notes of banana and coal smoke. Charred wood and honey mainly present on the palate. Dark chocolate and leather also hanging around. The finish is a medium in length and keeps the charred wood and chocolate notes from the palate. Overall, it's not the best thing I've tried from Mount Gay. Very woody and serious. Was fun to try a more robust Eclipse though. I'd say its slightly better than the original.

Surprisingly lively Eclipse with punch and elegant despite the alcohol, nice Barbados fruit on the nose. On the palate, at first a bit burning but then fruity sweetness, some vanilla, some caramel, some chocolate. Good finish. Overall fun!
