Sip this one slowly and neat — it's a contemplative pour, not a daily dram. The classic Caroni tar, petrol and old leather are here, but the Mizunara finish rounds off the edges and threads menthol, dark chocolate and dried apricot through the middle. Several members who tasted it side-by-side with the un-finished cask agree the Japanese oak calmed the sharp, boozy spirit and let more depth come out.

Small tasting of Precious Liquors from RCS. Mechanical workshop vibes on the nose with a sharp alcohol that's not overpowering. Beautiful dried and tropical fruits, leather, and a powerful smoky/peaty wood. A nice palate, full-bodied, smooth with complex and deep aromas very close to those on the nose, even better with a menthol that pairs really well with the wood. The finish is long, rich, and the smoky/peaty side from the nose comes back at the end. A rum that really benefits from airing.

An ultra intense nose, between very old leather, notes of dried meat, and a woodiness I'm not used to, so I imagine the influence of Mizunara. Aeration brings out peach, and a palpable sensation of candy/chalk. The attack on the palate is marked by time, the leather is still there, accompanied by dark chocolate, a hint of cooking spices, maybe even saffron, and an earthy impression, like chanterelles coming back! Little by little the framework integrates beautiful dried apricots, the menthol evolves towards eucalyptus. Quite unique and evolving towards mentholated, fruity notes, bitter orange, apricot as well as a finish bringing a slightly spicy/cayenne pepper note, and dark chocolate. I love it!

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at the height of its fame a rum that was added in a ratio of 1:10 to naval blends. It was too intense and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. The distillery ended production and closed in 2000. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. Interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die." I recommend it; Caroni is truly a unique rum.

Addendum from Village '26. Tried at Absolutely Nuts Spirit's. Another Caroni from '98. Blind, if you didn't know better, you might guess a T.D.L, which M. from R.S. Spirit's did when I had him try it. For me, a solid interesting bottling, but the price is not justified in my opinion.

Tasted in direct comparison with the rum before the finish in the Mizunara cask. The additional aging did the distillate really good, the aromas of Caroni on one hand and the Japanese oak work well together, a Caroni with an exceptional profile.

Quite exciting - barrel sample before the Mizunara finish and after. The finish does the rum good. Before relatively sharp, very alcoholic, afterwards noticeably rounder and clearer oak barrel influence. Overall, however, not a top Caroni.

Read full review ›Very nice Caroni, but clearly in another league price-wise: we're talking about a price level totally out of reach for ordinary mortals... We're very, very far from the blessed days of Caroni at €90 😄 Regarding the mizunara, my humble palate didn't perceive a Caroni radically transformed compared to other bottlings from the distillery. Nevertheless, it remains very good, with a nice execution and a consistently strong personality.
