A Vietnamese cane-juice rhum in a cognac cask isn't something you see every day, and that's most of the draw here. It drinks clean and herbal — flowers, a little fruit, vanilla and soft oak from the barrel, with citrus underneath. At 55.5% the alcohol stays surprisingly well behaved. One reviewer called it "quite clean agricole rhum, not thrilling but clean," and that sums up the split: lovely to drink, but it doesn't do much extra for the higher proof.

It's been sitting for a long time. Now it's the third Sampan, but with more abv and it's immediately noticeable on the aroma. The herbal side predominates, flowers, some fruit and something technical. On the palate it pretty much follows the nose. Finish too. It's nice and drinkable but doesn't offer anything extra those extra volts.
