Milano Whisky Company Caroni Single Cask Rum 1998
Sip this neat with a few drops of water and give it time — several tasters say it opens up noticeably and needs to rest. It's a classic tarry 1998 Caroni: petrol, pencil shavings and roasted wood up front, then cream toffee, vanilla and sweet tropical fruit (mango, lime) underneath. The split tropical-then-continental aging keeps it sippable, with a long, dry, tannic finish.

Really kudos to Milano whisky company for this selection! 10 years of tropical aging and 15 years of continental give a nice mix! A super elegant caroni that invites you to keep drinking! It really has a nice balance throughout the tasting!

Einer der teerigen 98er Caronis. Hintenraus sogar etwas Minze, was mir sonst nicht gefällt. Hier ist das ganze aber noch süffig, was ich auf die 10 Jahre tropische Lagerung schiebe. Schöner Caroni, den ich im Spitzenfeld der IB-98er Abfüllungen verorten würde.

#6523 21.03.2026 Day two part two of todays evening tasting with a few friends. Today the music is a bit different because not all like my Trance and Psy Trance, so we have settled on some EDM and hits from the 80s Thank you Tony for this rare sample. I think this is a great bottling and the price is OK at release as well. The nose is a bit atypical with polish, pencil shavings, light rubber, chocolate and roasted wood. The palate is a lith sour touch with wood, salt, polish, berries and light rubber. the finish is very long and light sour with salt, roasted wood, berries and faint rubber. Thie rum needs to rest for a good while and it actually opens up significantly with a few drops of water as recommended by Tony on the sample.

8,6:On the nose, tea, roasted wood notes like creamtoffee, pastry, yeast, roasted nuts, as the barrel impact is strong, industrial notes like tar, petrol and various fruits with berries, lime and toasted coconut, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, mango arises, some hints of custard, cigar and rubber, spicy oak and caramel. 8,7:On the palate, the attack is tasty with barrel impact notes, charred wood like white chocolate, crème brûlée, later cappuccino, roasted nuts, spicy, then toasted coconut and mango, papaya, yellow fruits, lime from fruits and industrial tones like tar, later menthol.The molasses is dark with licorice, slightly flowery. 8,5:The finish is rather long, dry and tannic, oaky, less balanced, with roasted wood notes pairing various fruits and industrial tones, slightly herbaceous molasses, earthy with cigar...

Strong technical oily Caroni

At the start the dirty, tarry notes are there but dissipate quite quickly and you are "only" left with sweet tropical fruits, caramel and vanilla and bit creamy notes. The taste is also a bit lacking for me, lightly tarry, fruity, bit dark with roasted-chocolatey notes. It is a very good rum but as far as Caroni goes, it just does not hit the mark with me.
