T.D.L Flensburg Rum Company Trinidad 2002
"What a trip," one member wrote, and that captures it. A classic TDL nose of mint, yellow fruit and light oak, then the palate swings hard into hops and a genuine cannabis note that dominates the finish. Column-still Trinidad, 21 years, matured in Armagnac and Cognac casks. Fascinating and unlike anything else, though several wish it had more punch at 46.5%.

How does T.D.L Flensburg Rum Company Trinidad 2002 taste?
Summarized by AI from community reviews.
The mint-and-cannabis TDL, gentle at 46.5% People find it a fascinating one-of-a-kind: peach-mint tea that twists into hops and cannabis. Loved for the weirdness, but many say 46.5% leaves it a touch thin and short.

Wonderful nose, which unfortunately does not continue in the mouth. Instead, the typical TDL notes are joined by a strong cannabis note. Really special, something I've never experienced before. Of course, a higher ABV would also be better.

Franconian Tasting Gang A nice attempt to break out of the original flavor profile a little. The label is already reflected in the taste. But is this really the fulfillment? Nice to have tried, but not a real winner for me.
Review by RumTaTa
On the nose, the typical T.D.L herbal note has the clear upper hand. The mint is accompanied by a subtle freshness that contrasts pleasantly with the barrel influence. Fruits and spices are also present. There is practically no alcoholic spiciness. Not much happens on the palate at first - pleasant sweetness and fruit, but after 3-5 seconds the rum takes an enormous twist and becomes a cannabis and hop monster, which intensifies over time! The mint remains but takes a back seat to the cannabis and hops. It is clearly noticeable that the rum was bottled at 46.5% - nothing scratches or bites: aromatically strong and intense but alcoholically very mild. Cannabis, hops and mint lead seamlessly into a wonderful finish and here the fruits have their say again. I love it when a rum behaves unpredictably and this one has taken the top position in this respect so far! It would be even better with a little more power.

Today in the glass, the current king of the TDL 2002s from RdL and the new exotic from FRC. 100% continental, 50/50 Armagnac/Cognac storage and port cask finish and supposedly heavy cannabis aromas. The FRC is a touch darker in color. The noses have a very similar profile, but the differences are still clear. The typical peach and mint iced tea is very present. There are also juicy cherries and marzipan with a little rose water. The FRC is aromatically much darker, almost malty and lacks the tart grapefruit of the RdL. A somewhat hoppy IPA is already apparent in the nose. In any case, the nose is really excellent and much more intense than the old, much too light FRC, but also darker than the other 2002s and not dissimilar to the 2003s and 2001s. The mouth is indeed a phenomenon! The attack is very mild at first and it starts very classically with peach-mint iced tea. But then it really develops the label-giving cannabis note. In comparison with the RdL, the tart hoppiness reveals a very similar note. The RdL is more tart, more grapefruit, citrus peel, ginger and overall much more complex. In addition to the herbal aromas, the FRC has a concise acidity and some bergamot. Unfortunately, apart from this wild vegetalness, the mouth is not very complex and quite thin with the 46%. The finish is beautifully long and very herbal, but nowhere near as intense and endless as the RdL. All in all, the rum lives up to its label, but it is in the mouth that the fear that the 46% is simply not enough comes true. The hemp is unfortunately a real one-trick pony effect. Despite a great nose, the rum only ranks in the lower midfield of the 2002s.

Yellow fruits, gummy bears, fresh notes on the nose. Reminiscent of the 2003 Angostura TDL or the 2002 RdL (TML42). Herbal and tart on the palate, with a hint of hops. The finish is slightly bitter, which in turn offsets the wateriness somewhat. Interesting TDL, which is quite unique, especially on the palate.

After I had already tried this rum when I sampled my first bottle and was full of praise, I tasted it again today at my leisure and my first impression was confirmed: an extremely drinkable rum that lives mainly from its powerful cannabis finish. Perfect dope for a relaxed and chilled-out Friday evening. For me, the most (positively) surprising release of 2023.

#4569 22.01.2024 Once again relaxing a bit at home. Sampling this rum while adding older tastings to the app. This is a very nice bottling from this bottler. Overall a potent profile with a nice kick to it. There is a faint medicinal note in the profile. Nose Light wood and roasted notes, medium fruity, light mint, floral, light medicinal note. Palate Balanced, wood, light roasted, medium dry, fruity, light mint and a lovely floral touch. Finish Medium to long, wood, light mint and vegetal notes, citrus with mint at the end. The empty glass has some light herbs and faint chocolate.

On the nose lots of mint/menthol and tea. Also some fruity notes, spices, hops. I like it very much. The hops/beer note becomes more intense over time and a hint of cannabis is also noticeable. On the palate lots of eucalyptus and mint, but also cannabis. Extremely crazy and exciting, although not 100% my thing. Edit: Small TDL (blind) cross-tasting with various vintages: Last place 6: Dram Mor TDL 2007. Overall flat and boring, rather Spanish style. 5th place: FRC TDL 2002. Lots of cannabis, beer and hops. You have to be into that and want it. I liked the nose better than the palate. 4th place: FRC TDL 2009. Reserved mint, lots of spices and barrel influence. 3rd place: Single Cask Nation TDL 2003: Overall lots of mint and menthol, slightly floral/plant-like. Very good 2003 TDL, not quite on the level of Ricci in comparison. 2nd place: Spiritori TDL 2008. By far the dirtiest TDL in the tasting. Really good value for money! 1st place: Ricci TDL 2003: Mint, fruits and nicely intense and complex.

Great mint/grass notes at excellent drinking strength.

8,6:On the nose, very enticing first impression with tropical fruits like passion fruit, papaya, some citrus and pear, roasted wood and spice. On aeration, yellow fruits pop up, intense flowery, herbaceous, tea tones, as mentioned, perhaps cannabis and nuts, vanilla from wood. 8,2:On the palate, the attack is mostly herbaceous, flowery, hay-ish or cannabis like, perhaps beer-like, spicy with pepper, cardamom, vanilla later, there is some citrus, dry, roasted wood with leather, dark chocolate.Resting the rum helps with fruitier notes like mandarine, peaches, it balances all tones, becomes minty. 8,3:The finish is more in balance, dry and tannic, woody, still heavily vegetal, a bit darker with an additon of black tea. Some confectionery arises and yellow fruits..

Wow, super cool! Typical TDL nose, fresh with menthol and the lychee notes I like so much. Slight barrel notes in the background, but unobtrusive. This continues on the palate at first, with a little more barrel. Then a clear weed aroma comes out of nowhere, the lychee recedes, but remains there. Mouthfeel rather dry, astringent. The finish is of medium length, the aromas linger on the tongue for a while. Bonus points for the unusual Weed Nite ✌️

I really like this T.D.L. Of course, you get the usual mint on the nose. Also, it tastes very fresh and slightly medicinal. On the palate mainly mint, also very vegetal, and some black tea can be detected.

Malty, greasy TDL.

Wow! I didn't expect that... I was extremely skeptical about the low alcohol content and the weed logo, but this thing is an absolute grenade! Extremely tasty and drinkable with mint, yellow Williams pear and juicy peach and clearly weed/cannabis, as well as some milk chocolate and green cardamom. Without being a professional, I would guess that the grass aroma is super lemon haze😃 super tasty, palatable, aromatically complex and not too thin at any point. A very positive surprise!
Review by Christian Rudt
For me, great on the nose. Typical TDL, very relaxed due to reduction and cask influences. On the palate, these are clearly complemented by a slightly sour hop note. In the finish, distinctive cannabis, you wonder where that comes from. I'd just say an interesting variant.
Review by Nivius
Crazy stuff, but the double punch is missing. The second bottle is already ordered haha. In terms of aromas (aside from the cask notes) for me it’s between the 2002 Romdeluxe and the 2001 Rasta Morris - but if you have the Rasta Morris next to it in the glass, that one has much more intensity. And here we come to the main problem of this TDL - I perceive it as heavily watered down, so this rum really didn’t do itself any favors. However, it is extremely easy to drink, as the alcohol is very well integrated... well, rather too little alcohol is integrated. Nose: smells fruity like TDL and heavily like wine cask. On the palate you get a real explosion of flavors - first Angostura-TDL-Orange, then mint and cannabis - and wow - the grass notes are even more pronounced than in the Rasta Morris. Then all the casks come in, which I can hardly differentiate anymore. I really like the cask finish, it has something of very expensive old sherry whiskies - but I can imagine many won’t like the finishing of this rum - especially since it hits very abruptly on the palate and only harmonizes with the TDL notes in the finish. The finish is, for such a thin rum, very long.
Review by Johannes
Very exciting! At first a bit thin, then the typical menthol TDL notes, then a distinct cannabis note joins in. Even though I'm not really into cannabis, I find this one different and exciting!

Nose: Top! A beautiful profile that I like to linger on. The "subtle" hint of hemp from the label doesn't show in the nose yet, instead the known and sought-after profile of the 2000s - 2003 TDL with mint, lots of oak, citrus fruits (red and yellow), plus grapes, a slight hint of furniture polish, ripe gooseberries, a bit of banana, peach and overripe strawberries with vanilla and caramel at the end. Not very dirty, rather on the cleaner side. On the palate then the surprise: The cannabis or hemp aroma comes through fully here, much clearer than expected. Noticeable hints of cannabis aromas I had already perceived in the Rom de Luxe TDL No. 42 2002 with 20 years and the Rasta Morris 2001 with 21 years, but here I am actually positively surprised by the clarity and dominance, so I look forward to a "FRC TDL 02 21 with Blunt" and leave the classic "rum with cigar" aside. A small downside is that the really great nose does not continue 1:1 on the palate. The mint from the nose has almost completely given way to or replaced by cannabis, the oak is noticeable and the rum is slightly astringent. Dirty notes are almost completely missing, the impression is rather clean and the Spanish profile also shines through a bit. A bit more volume would probably have fit, but I understand that this might have negatively affected the finely tuned aroma. So this rum is definitely also beginner-friendly and easy sipping. Overall, the many fruits from the nose recede into the background, but I am curious how this rum will develop over time in the opened bottle. The finish is medium to long with a strong cannabis finish on the palate. Anyone who knows and likes cannabis and/or (preferably both): definitely grab it, it pleases a lot. From me stable 89 points and a clear buying recommendation for the inclined connoisseur. 420. Nuff' said. Addendum: After almost a week the port influence also comes fully through in the nose and on the palate and creates an amazing bouquet with cognac/armagnac influence on the TDL profile. The cannabis flip is still there. Now 90.

TDL meets hemp. Still restrained on the nose, but very present on the palate and finish, here a very distinct hemp note is added to the menthol-mint-heavy profile. The reduced strength makes sense here, it works without seeming diluted. Easy to drink, but you should be okay with hemp notes.
Review by Boletus
This is clearly not a steamhammer T.D.L that with over 60% and an intense menthol-oak mix hits the trigeminal nerve. Instead, there is a delicate rum that can be held in the mouth for a long time due to its relaxed alcohol strength. The tasting experience changes from an entry reminiscent of Armagnac or Cognac to lovely fruit aromas with peach and lychee, until it finally turns into an exciting variety of herbs that besides typical mint also offers notes of aromatic hops and fresh hemp flowers. Elegant and delicious!
Review by Andi
A pleasant fresh note with herbs on the nose. Yellow fruit and some wood are also present. On the palate, a completely crazy cannabis note dominates the mint and fruit notes relatively quickly. A slight sweetness mixes in. Fruit and cannabis notes remain medium-long in the finish.
Review by DosenZorn
Smells like a heavily hopped IPA with nice fruity aroma hops. Plus a wonderful fresh fruit note and a bit of wood influence. And on the palate actually the grassy aromas that were reported. Incredible, again a completely new facet that I haven't experienced in rum before. Great, extraordinary drop.
Review by Jarek
I could only agree with the previous tasters, at first a quite typical TDL profile, which then develops strong notes of hops and especially cannabis. Unfortunately, it lacks some power...
Review by HenryL
Tasted at the Hanse Spirit 2024 One of my highlights of the fair! Beautiful herbal nose paired with yellow fruits. On the palate I had a lot of hops on the first day, like IPA as rum. On the second day it went more in the direction of cannabis for me. Either way, very cool!
Review by w00tAN
Nose nicely floral, fruit especially pear! Also lemon with mint. On the palate very mild, tastes almost directly like a Mojito due to the dominant mint. Finish rather short. Quite drinkable but for me a bit one-dimensional. So a few points off.
Review by Serge
Delicious TDL... the grassy note is already there on the palate – in the form of a hop-like aroma. But the rum is very tasty otherwise and it's not really the standout feature. For that, I'd rather recommend a little bag after the rum 😂 Not so different from the Bottleshop release (which is significantly cheaper).
Review by Fuwi
Short test, had a small sample. Mint and cannabis dominate - unfortunately not my thing. Besides that, fruity nose that stays on the tongue at first impression but then the minty finish with the spicy cannabis note. Quite special, you have to like it.
Review by Filip Šikula
I'm coming back to this rum after a long time and raising the rating by five points. Interesting nose, where besides the more common Trinidad tones, two unusual scents appear. The smell of beer and the smell of hemp. The taste is weaker than the nose, but beer and hemp also appear there. I would have liked a higher ABV.
Review by Émile Shevek
On the nose, it is very fascinating and full of personality, with peach scents first, then mint, toasted wood, floral, sauternes, and mango. On the palate, it is consistent with the nose, the sauternes note over tropical fruits becomes dominant accompanied by a structured and pleasant note of cannabis and hops. The finish remains fresh and fruity with added citrus and wood/leather. In the empty glass, wood, mint, and aged notes. A rum with a unique flavor, great discovery, thanks to Lars for the sample!
Review by Lot-NAS
The nose could also be an old Clynelish, very mineral and subtle wood, vanilla, pear, some spices and slightly herbal notes (mint). There's definitely a lot to discover here. On the palate also very balanced and you find basically everything you smell. However, it lacks some power, so many aromas can only be vaguely interpreted. A pity. In the finish the same. Here the mint becomes more herbal at the very end and tastes more like the stem of the mint. The association with cannabis is understandable. But I'm not sure if my subconscious isn't playing a trick on me because of the label. Overall a very tasty and pleasant drop.
Review by Gil Firth
Excellent bottle. Doesn't really feel like rum. Sour. Sweet. Tropical. A bit herbal. This is a rollercoaster. Not for everyone.
Review by Master P
In the nose still a pleasant TDL with nice fruit and mint. Nice light cannabis note which is immediately followed by strong, intense hops. This is a complex course. Very exciting and tasty. A little more ABV would be good, but it's ok.
Review by Schnubbii
Spoiler: OK, it is "the" grass rum. Thanks to Gunnar for the sample! The nose still reminds me a lot of a particularly clean version of my favorite, the 2002 bottling from RdL (Wild Series 42), but on the palate after a short time and especially on the finish you get a twist towards hops and "special" herbs. At first I had no special expectations for this rum, but I find that it offers a really exciting experience in taste. If it had more proof I would surely buy a bottle, but here I miss a bit of punch.
Review by Bavarian Rum Lover
Short and sweet: if I want a hemp taste, I'll smoke some or take CBD drops... Otherwise typical TDL character with spice and a nice mintiness. Relatively short finish and becoming bitter, more alcohol would have suited the profile quite well. Doesn't make me go wild.
Review by Alexander Rasch
Ok. I am actually, like many here, very fascinated by this bottling. On the nose still a pleasant TDL with nice fruit and mint. On the palate then the surprise. After the classic TDL start comes a nice light cannabis note which is directly caught up by strong intense hops. That’s a complex progression. Very exciting and tasty. Towards the end it gets a bit weak but nicely dry. I think I understand the reduction but I find it a bit too much.
Review by Lukas Jäger
Good rum, but not as intense as the hemp note was described to me personally.

Vintage 2002. I rate it 8.9 out of 10, an excellent rum that ranks high even among my more than 1,300 ratings.
Review by Martin Švojgr
Terribly interesting, in the aroma and at the beginning of the taste a subtle angostura and it suddenly turns into Armagnac. Very interesting.
Review by Nicolas Pantaloni
« What a trip! Honestely can we be sure this is pure rum? In any case it is a pure pleasure. Whoever predicted this recipe of cask finishes would lead to this result, is a genius. Now i have the impression the profile is quite fragile: one sip is pure cannabis and tropical fruits, while the next is a more mundane, fragrant rum. » WhiskyNotes sorry but i can’t say it any better!

21 years old, hence the price, but you'll find better and cheaper.... It's good, but lacks power and, above all, a very average finish.
