Velier Le Rocher Clairin Le Rocher 2022
People who chase the weird end of rum — think mezcal, peat, funky agricole — will feel at home here. The nose throws olive brine, acetone, smoke and roasted meat juice; the palate is oily and dry, all fresh grass, herbs and green pepper. At 50% the alcohol sits well integrated, so you can sip it neat. Barbecue-smoky, savory, and proudly strange.

Savory, smoky clairin near mezcal territory A savory, smoky oddball that its many fans adore — most rate it high and call the price-to-quality fair. Just know the olive-and-acetone character isn't for everyone.

I like this Clairin much better than the one I just tasted. The nose is mainly olive, fleshy and solvent. On the palate it is very fresh and herbal, herbs and grass are recognizable.

Very special. Very exciting taste, but not quite my taste. Fresh, fruity agricole notes, but also slightly salty, grassy olive.

#4881 Whisky Live in Paris 27.09.2024-30.09.2024. Another great event meeting a lot of RumX new and old friends. This year three weren't as many new releases as in 2023, but I still had a great time. Nose Smooth, light funky, fruity, berries, faint caramel, light nutts, light rubber, light pineapple, light olive. Palate Balanced, oily, fresh, light vegetal, fruits, light herbal, light grass, faint caramel, berries, strawberry. Finish Long, fruits, banana, spice, light nutts, faint honey, light herbs. More yummy Clairin, I just love these releases and the price always fits the quality.

A high-quality clairin that combines originality and consistency. The nose reveals a smoky, meaty framework, reminiscent of a good barbecued meat, but also a funky side that gives off aromas of solvents, olives, tomato and pineapple. The mix works well, with a slightly sweet touch to boot. A nose that's both zany and creamy, and makes you want to go back for more. The oily attack on the palate draws a vegetal arc of fresh grass and aromatic herbs, then moves on to more peaty flavors that lead to smokiness and meat. Spices, berries and even succinct hints of cheese flavor this intriguing but surprisingly well-constructed profile: there's great harmony between the flavors that preserves the aromatic structure. The alcohol is very well integrated. The finish is long, imbuing the palate with meaty, smoky, earthy and herbaceous markers. Banana, olive and nail varnish are among the aromatic scents that linger on the palate. A very good clairin, full of qualities and strange flavors that every connoisseur should taste to open up his or her horizons.

A fine discovery, this Clairin. An assertive character with esters, solvents and pineapple. The description might suggest a Jamaican. However, the cane is clearly present. Olive on the finish. Very nice.

On the nose, I get classic Clairin notes such as sweet cane juice, dried tomatoes, not so much olive or olive brine like the Sajous our the Sonson, however I have some honey like the Vaval. Additionaly, there is a bit of ester here, it's lightly funky but it can be smelled, and more importantly, this very specific bbq notes, more like roasted meat juice. In the mouth, it's still meaty and oily, but also sweet and herbal, still sugarcane juice and honey, and slightly herbal. Final is medium and definitely herbal. This is a very enjoyable pour, for some it's even the best Clairin. For me, my favorite remains the Vaval, but this one might be second or third, along with the Casimir. Another great price quality ratio.

This rum is very special, but I love it. It's full of very, very ripe, almost rotten fruit aromas, almost like a pear eau de vie, but with a peaty aftertaste that strongly resembles mezcal. On the other hand, I can understand those who don't like it. If you know Mohba rum, I think it's very similar.

My second experience with a clairin was excellent. This time I expected anything. The aroma is a smoky, brings a large portion of green olives, brine, a tiny bit of mowed grass and especially acetone. Basically the acetone dominates the aroma. The taste is on dry side, salty, again with smoked olives and green peppercorns. I couldn't detected any fruity components. The finish is medium long. I'll let the open bottle rest, and in the next couple days/weeks will see how the rum will change due the oxidation.

On-line degustation of Clairin by Rum explorer 9.12.2024 here is a very pronounced difference on the nose before and after the first sip. Of the sweet fruity aromas after the sip I find more smoked cheese.. pineapple reappears and the experience is phenomenal

Wonderful masterclass with Daniele Biondi. It was great to try to whole range. The story of Clairin and Haiti 🇭🇹 is absolutely amazing. It is a privilege to be able to try such a pure product at home. Made based on syrop and using dunder. It much denser and heavier like Jamaican rum. Oily and smoky. Juice is boiled with fire. Fermented in concrete tanks Typical way of producing clairin for northern Haiti using dunder which never spread after revolution of 1804 to the south.
