Heidewitzka, what a nose - to stick to the technical jargon. Extreme depth, you are extremely misled olfactorily - reality sets in on the palate, the alcohol becomes noticeable without creating a negative impression - but it remains a final positive impression. Great promise for the future, I look forward to everything that is yet to come.

Franconian Tasting Gang Actually not bad, but doesn't really get me fully. Nice to have tried, but unfortunately not quite my profile. A little too bitter and medicinal for me. Probably the red wine finish is too dominant for me. But it could also be because I've tasted so much before. I might try it again at the next opportunity. Thanks Jarek for the sample for this round.

Wow, a real surprise! The nose is an exciting mix of gooseberries, strawberries, (fermented) ester notes and a great woody influence. In a blind tasting, I would probably have guessed savanna. The palate has plenty of power, but without being too strenuous. The typical Savanna strawberry-mango-high-ester associations also come to mind on the palate. I really like the red wine influence. First-class rum from Taiwan. Thanks Frank for the sample! 🤩🥃

I can finally hold it in my hands. It's not easy and not cheap to get hold of a Renaissance. Individual bottles come via DK, UK and FR. Of course, it's better to buy it in Taiwan if you have the chance to be there. I just had that chance and even then you can't buy the rum anywhere. If you live in Taiwan, you can sign up to a list on fb and secure yourself a bottle. Friends of mine kindly did this for me and so I now have two bottles, one to share (already done ☺️) and one to enjoy... The distillery is experimenting with its excellent rum and various casks. This one was matured in a higher quality red wine cask - the second highest class in the Bordeaux classification - from the Médoc. The result is a multi-layered and intense rum... Nose: intense and powerful. Very fruity, sour-sweet, almost floral, with an interesting medicinal side note. I find lime with grapefruit, gooseberry with kiwi, redcurrant with passion fruit right at the forefront. Behind this is a cloud of lavender and lilac. The impression of ginger and maple syrup somehow goes well with this. There is also an artificial note with a strong, sweet nail polish. I really like it. 9.0 Palate: oha, the 66.7% is immediately noticeable. Very intense and strong, somewhat acrid. Salty and slightly bitter at first, before the sweet and sour fruitiness comes through again. Clearly passion fruit, kiwi and gooseberry with a little lemon zest, slightly fermented. Only after this can some red wine aroma penetrate. There is a clear similarity to some Savanna wines. Definitely meets my taste. 8,8 I was captivated by the small and fine Renaissance Distillery with its fantastic base spirit and great casks. And then this amazing label on the back with all the information you could wish for. Totally great!

A vegetal nose of dry herbs with medicinal herbs, vermouth, dried lime, prunes and old varnished wood. A slightly sharp volatile (vinegar) gives a lot of freshness. Molasses flavors are in the background and add depth. The palate entry is lively with bitter medicinal herbs, vermouth, thyme, black elderberry, cedar wood. Like on the nose, a small very controlled volatile gives liveliness and freshness. On the finish you feel tannins and the cedar wood gains importance. The aromas fade quickly then stabilize and remain long in the mouth. The tannins become obvious with a nice bitterness and the fruits (gooseberries and very ripe banana) stay until the end.

Wow, this is an exciting bottling! I’ve been watching Renaissance Distillery thanks to dear Frank, who also provided this sample, for a while now and I have to say what’s produced there in faraway Taiwan is impressive! The nose comes with plenty of esters, for me somewhere between Mhoba (some say vomit) and Savanna HERR. Along with a good potpourri of tropical fruits, insanely exciting. On the palate surprisingly heavy and broad, even woody and strong. The cask and pre-filling have done a lot of work and give the rum a “winey” note, which is almost a bit too present for me, as little remains of the basic character (or what I expected from the nose). Still insanely exciting and tasty and for me competing with some really strong bottlings from the “mainstream” countries. Personally, I’m always happy to discover treasures even in these niches and this is one!

Wow, really nice and fruity. I wouldn’t have expected that now. Alcohol is very well integrated. Fruity (currant/plum) and wood with some sweetness, I like it very much. Even the smell in the empty glass blows me away, top. Many thanks for the sample.
