Here's the twist: blind, almost nobody guesses Fiji. The Marsala cask takes over with red wine, raisins, spice and dark chocolate, and the wild island funk mostly disappears. Several tasters clock "Weihnachtsmarkt" spice and a long red-wine finish. Pleasant and a little sweet, but many found it flat and one-note. Fine as a daily sipper, not a Fiji showcase.

Marsala broadside on the nose, and it suits it very well. Spicy to almost Christmassy, heavy sweetness, behind it sticky to medicinal. Heavy, dense, sticky. Very sweet on the palate, but not sticky, in keeping with the wine. A good proportion of esters counteracts this somewhat, resulting in a powerful, sweet spiciness in the blend in the second half. Long red wine finish, Christmas market vibes. Great!

This is the post-tasting of the Plantation Masterclass I missed. This is now the 7th rum from it and I've reached the point where I can hardly detect any differences between the Spanish-style rums I've tasted. Again, I can taste coconut and detect only moderately well-integrated alcohol.

Masterclass with Alexandre Gabriel on 04.04.2024. Plantation becomes Planteray. A positive surprise for me at this tasting. Not 100% what I imagine a typical Fiji to be, but still a success.

Nice and fruity on the nose but also alcoholic. Also slightly alcoholic on the palate and reminds me of Central American-style rums. The finish is quite short and is also more in the Zacapa style. Average rum and not necessarily recognizable as Fiji.

Very herbal, lots of cask. But interesting rum. The Fiji profile is hardly left due to the finish. Blind I would have definitely guessed a Panama from Ron del Artesano, they also like such a cask influence.

With this single cask from Fiji, I struggled at first. In my opinion, the Fiji rum initially harmonizes little with the Marsala cask. Somehow it's more a side-by-side where the wine clearly dominates. If you play a bit on the palate with the rum, the Fiji influence becomes stronger.

Whisky Fair Rhein-Ruhr Düsseldorf April 2026. Next up is the Plantation stand, always good for some new points. The Fiji has a fruity nose, especially citrus fruits. On the palate then lots of wine and some spice.

I think that the original character from Fiji has been completely lost here. The ageing dominates and brings harmonious facets such as fruit, spice and wood, but the rum base for such ageing is probably interchangeable.

Fidji notes in the nose. Intense with glue and some wood. Wine notes are noticeable, but only add some complexity. On the palate the Marsala for me is to present and overwhelming unfortunately. Thanks to Alexandre and the RumX Team for the masterclass!

Smooth and sweet, without completely dispensing with appealing aromas. Fruits, spices and wood are all recognizable, but clearly take second place to the rather present sweetness. A good rum, Fiji for beginners.

RumX masterclass Planteray, 4.4.24, live with Alexandre Gabriel. Night tasting. Nose: dry and alcoholic at the start. Over time, sweet and sour fruits are added. Passion fruit, redcurrant and lime. There is also vanilla and some cocoa. Atypical for Fiji. 7,2 Palate: strong and thin at the same time, which is why it needs the 51%. Spicy, salty, dry, slightly acidic. Somewhat nutty and very slightly licorice. Still atypical for Fiji and therefore does not meet my expectations. 7,0

Planteray/Plantation RumX Online Masterclass: A little restrained on the nose, light citrus aromas and glue. Sweeter than expected on the palate but dry at the same time. Dark chocolate, some burnt rubber and wood and coffee, then the Marsala finish which adds a lot of raisin, which is only too "light" aromatically for a Fiji rum, but nevertheless no missing notes and relatively round. But could do with more complexity... I would have preferred this rum without a finish!

#4685 04.04.2024 Online tasting wit RumX and Plantaray. Nose Sweet, fruity, light earthy, light glue, floral, light nutts, faint mint. Palate Wood, warm, tannins, fruity, dried fruit, light marzipan, spice, Finish Long, wood, tannins, orange, light chocolate, light marzipan, spice. The empty glass has a light smoky note as well as some dried fruit.

A bit weak on the nose, some light fruits, nuts & unexpected alcohol showing up. On the palate you get light spices, esters, bright fruits, white pepper. Wine influence is there, but only on the backend. Not overpowering. Right level of abv. Medium long finish on white peppers. //update: after some time in the glass it gets very smoky

Again, not noting ABV and finish with this sample, only brand and source. Impressions: not exceptional, but not bad. The nose gives some Cognac vibes, which I find in the ending. I suppose the wine mingled with the higher ABV a bit. It is also sweet, and has a hint of Hogo, but only very little, just enough to notice. The body has also a certain wood influence I like, and the mixture is quite tasty. If it just wasn't as sweet...

At first dry and alcoholic, sweet and slight notes of wine. Palate is strong and thin at the same time. Some nutty and woody notes, atypical for Fiji, I usually know them stronger and more intense. It's okay but nothing you absolutely need.

Marsala finish, well, here I expect sweetness at first, I usually don't like that. Surprisingly dry and spicy at first, I wasn't expecting that. Alexandre explains that the Ferrand casks made from European oak deliver more "spice" than the American representatives. Another lesson learned! However, the rum is then quite flat and sweet, with little of the wild Fiji vibe recognizable. The dominant hazelnut is exciting!

Wonderfully fruity on the nose. Tart white wine, raisins, citrus and nuts. On the palate, I miss the nice fruity, dirty profile that Fiji achieved with the 2001 vintage. The red wine also unfortunately comes through too strongly here. Overall a solid rum, but not much more.

No Fiji DNA recognizable for me. This could be any random rum. The finish, however, I find somewhat recognizable and therefore okay for me, but overall definitely too sweet and too alcoholic on the nose.

Plantation Masterclass mit Alexadre Gabriel. Rotwein und Schokolade sind hier die Hauptdarsteller in Nase und Mund. Hat leider gar nix mit den Fijis (wie den 2001ern) zu tun, die wir so lieben. Nicht (zumindest nicht als Fiji Rum) empfehlenswert. Aber um dem Rum gerecht zu werden: mit dem Rotwein und Cognac Finish kommt etwas in diese eher nichtssagenden Fiji Vintages, das sonst nicht da wäre. Guter Rum, nur kein gutertypischer Fiji

Planteray RumX Masterclass by Alexandre 04.04.2024: The wine notes are there and predominate in the nose and on the palate. The rum is very much in the background and not necessarily recognizable as Fiji. Otherwise a little thin and weak.

Somehow unspectacular. Seems very closed on the nose and palate. On the nose, the Marsala comes through lightly. On the palate, none of the sweetness is felt. A slight fruitiness is noticeable. Alcohol is well integrated.

Plantation tasting April 4th. On the nose fruity but flat, after some time herbs come through. On the mouth quite nice but not exciting. The herbal note reminds me a bit of Mauritius.

Tried at Whisky & more 2026 in Hattingen I would have imagined it sweeter, but the Marsala finish, like everything else, doesn't come out so clearly. Somehow remains generic, no real character comes through. Remains a bit edgy and uneven, nice - but nothing I need on my shelf.

Untypical Fiji... I've tasted many Fiji rums. Here I don't find much of that. Pure column still. Maybe that's why. Also surprisingly sweet again. Simple sipper with a decent load of wood on the palate.

Schwer in Worte zu fassen, wenn es um den Geschmack geht. Einfach nur lecker „würzig“, mit Holz und Kokos Gaumen. Die Nase hat neben dem würzigen Anklang noch mehr Holz zu bieten. Keine große Komplexität, aber einfach gut, Gefällt mir, als daily sipper.

On The Rocks: On the nose mild fruit, floral and citrus with a stronger spice and oak. Taste is smooth and has an mild alcohol hit with some sweetness and a delayed spice and tingle. Finish is medium length with a nice spice slowly fading away. Mixed Pepsi Zero: On the nose a dusty Pepsi Zero. Taste is smooth and has a moderate Red Wine and sweetness. It is a unique flavour mixed and the Pepsi Zero brings forward a stronger red wine flavour. Finish is short but smooth. Mixed this is a completely different rum experience.
