Tasted on-site in Calheta. Very interesting nose with lots of fruit and even a bit of funk! On the palate, then classic Spanish and unfortunately without the interesting notes of the nose. Without dilution, definitely much better. Aftertaste: the fruits seem to come through again but here barrel and wood dominate. Surprisingly good, unfortunately there are no cask-strength releases or even single casks.

Rare Calheta 1999 Only 40% abv, but impressed aroma. Nose: Sticky tape, glue, soap, litchi, grape, guava, melon. Some typical rotten aromas. Cheese, wax, yogurt & umami. Little bit of shugarcane and candies. Taste: dry, tannins. Dry apricots, glue, banana, guava, mango, butterscotch, white chocolate butter, leather, oak & sugarcane. Aftertaste: mild, medium, dry. Lot of oak, tannins, mango, leather. This rum not so simple. It need time & more attention. Very interesting & tasty. Approved.
