T.D.L Kill Devil Trinidad 2003
Opinions here really do split, and it comes down to one thing: menthol. This 18-year Trinidad TDL is a full-on mint-and-menthol bomb, with black currant, blackberry and sour cherry behind it and a dry, tannic, slightly bitter oak finish. Fans of the minty TDL profile call it the real deal; several tasters find the menthol swallows almost everything else.

How does T.D.L Kill Devil Trinidad 2003 taste?
From community reviews · summarized with AI
Full-on menthol-mint TDL, dry and tannic Prototypical minty TDL — loved by menthol devotees, too one-dimensional for others. Most agree the oak turns bitter and, at 63.7%, the alcohol isn't always cleanly integrated.

Update 16.02.2025: Today at the bottlekill I have to leave another impression. The nose is the same as yesterday, but the mouth is noticeably better. Still not particularly complex but almost too prototypical for the minty TDLs and nowhere near as sharp-edged and alcoholic as yesterday. +2 Original 02/15/2025 After a crosstasting with the Nobilis TDL 2003, the Kill Devil 13 yo 2003, the Tamosi 2003, the first TWJ 2003 19yo and the new WDC 22yo, here comes the 18 yo Kill Devil as a second helping. One sniff: Wow, what's that? It's very different from the 13 yo, but also from the WDC, Tamosi or Nobilis. No wonder, a glance at the label shows: The 18 yo is from 04/2003 (not 02/2003 like its younger brother or the bottlings from WDC and Nobilis). The first thing you notice on the nose is pure mint, and plenty of it. It is also quite similar to the TWJ, not quite as brightly fruity, but somewhat smokier. The mint also dominates in the mouth, along with a few other herbs and an unusual lovage note, which is already moving slightly towards umami. Together with the tea, this is perhaps the most herbal TDL I can remember. In addition to the typical peach, the fruit is clearly characterized by sour citrus aromas. Nevertheless, the similarity to the TWJ is also clear in the mouth. The alcohol integration is not quite optimal and, together with the sourness, leads to a sometimes quite sharp mouthfeel. The finish is long but not as intense as with some other TDLs. The freshness of the mint in particular lingers in the mouth for a long time. The 18-year-old Kill Devil doesn't quite reach the level of the TWJ - mainly because of the spiciness in the mouth - but it can clearly set itself apart from its 13-year-old brother.

T.D.L. born in 2003, over 60% abv, that must rock! Unfortunately, it's far too one-dimensional for me in this form. Menthol and mint eat up almost all the other aromas. I like the strong intensity on the palate, but the menthol flavor makes it almost unpleasant. For me, this is less of an option, but for hardcore T.D.L. mint disciples, this could be the holy grail alongside the CDI brother. Many thanks for the sample @Lukashabbitdri ks

Rather bleak on the nose tbh. I get some menthol and woody/ leathery notes but all in all there is comparatively little going on on the nose. On the palate also very wood forwards and dry. Black tea and leather. This tastes quite old. Mint shows up on the finish which is long and nice. Still this bottling doesn’t really speak to me today like some other 2003 bottlings in the lineup.

The full load of menthol/mint is present here. 👍🏻An The nose also reveals wonderful fruity aromas of blackcurrants, blackberries and sour cherries. On the palate, there is an initial sweetness of dark caramel before the fresh menthol note appears again, paired with dark berries. Spicy aromas then appear. The alcohol is very well integrated. The finish is on the minty, herbal side... A very good bottling

Not quite my cup of tea. Lots of mint and menthol - but for me the (not so rich) fruits are too much on the dark berry side (cassis, blackberry) ... too little caramel, yellow fruits. Not my favorite TDL profile and not my favorite 2003

8,6:On the nose, menthol and fresh, minty, herbaceous and roasted wood notes with leather, caramel, chocolate and nuts are the first impression we get. On aeration, first fruits arise with currants, then peaches, berries and the last sour cherry, as also tobacco, basil and flowery notes, burnt sugar from roasted wood. 8,6:On the palate, the attack is intense, dry, astringent with menthol, black tea, tea, mint, some perfume and medicinal notes like soap, smoky roasted wood with caramel, coffee and leather, spicy, strong sandal wood and blackcurrants. After resting the rum, it becomes round, sweet and balanced, fruitier with black berry, dried fruits, peaches and mango, citrus, delicious with confectionery, toffee, chocolate and herbaceous, flowery nuances. 8,6:The finish is long, dry and tannic, bitter and metallic, still sweet, smoky and spicy, fruity with variety of notes mentioned above...

#7265 09.09.2026 Relaxing with a few samples after starting the day with a migraine. Finally it has gone down to a regular headache. Listening to some new Trance tracks on Spotify. Very nice TDL with an attractive price tag at release. Medium intense profile with fruits, caramel, molasses, roasted wood, spice, tobacco, caramel, mint, tannins, faint smoke and leather.

In the test WDC, RC(Edt.52?), Hunter Laing and the one from Spirit Gallery. The differences are clearly recognizable, the WDC and RC are more on the Spanish chocolate side, whereas the SG and HL are the absolute minty alcohol bombs. There's a little too much mint in both for me, which overpowers almost everything. Sorry, it's a little too much for me. But it's a matter of taste, unfortunately not mine. Otherwise they are all good bottlings, although I would put the WDC and RC more in the easy sipping category.

Edit: Tasted again in a different glass. I like it even better. Wood no longer so present. Great Nana mint on the nose. Scattered fruit and mentholated peach on the palate. I like it very much. Goes in the direction of CDI 2003 TDLs. Intense sweetness of mint. Simply awesome!!! A 2003 TDL with lots of mint and menthol on the nose, but especially on the palate. But there is more to discover and especially in the nose there is a lot of berry and spice. The rum is intense on the palate. But also a lot of barrel with tannins. The finish is medium-long and woody with bitter notes. Mint accompanies the entire finish. Those who like the minty TDL profile will have fun here. The wood influence is a little too high, as the rum has become very bitter.

Interesting nose, menthol, currants and menthol. A really wild mouth and finish, menthol, spice and pepper but light. Mouthwash and green pepper with a medium long finish. Unusual so can see people enjoying that but not to my taste
