Several tasters land on the same word: mezcal. This Mexican cane-juice rum drinks like a rum-mezcal hybrid — musty and earthy on the nose, then dry, peppery and honeyed with sugarcane on the palate. One member swears you'd never guess it's 70%; the alcohol really is that well tucked in. Interesting to try, but a few found it more curious than gripping.

The nose and attack are very nice with fine wood (sandalwood, cedar), candy floss, caramel, light spices and very light smoked ham. The alcohol is not quite optimally integrated. With a little time in the glass, it develops aromas reminiscent of the Clairin Communal Ansyen (the term "funky Swedish berries" was used in another review of the Clairin). The finish is quite short, with some sweetness remaining. A nice rum with a somewhat unique aroma profile, but I can't understand the huge hype surrounding it.

This Alambique is again very musty, a very peculiar rum. Otherwise I can still detect some chocolate on the nose. On the palate it is a bit peppery, and it also has a slight tequila touch.

So now the three different Mexican rums in the glass that BananaJoe found somewhere. Unfortunately no unicorns, which was to be expected. My conclusion: nice to have tried such things, but unfortunately nothing more.

7,8:On the nose, brown it is😉....with variety of spicy and roasted wood notes like cardamom, perhaps allspice, sandal wood, chocolate, bacon, nuts and burnt sugar, then herbaceous sugar cane and citrus fruits. On aeration red fruits arise and flowery, vegetal side of cane with tea. 7,5:On the palate, the attack is sweet with sugarcane honey, flowery, herbaceous and hay-ish, roasted wood notes like chocolate, burnt sugar, confectionery with biscuits, slightly smoky, spicy with pepper and fruity with citrus and red fruits.There is strong agave touch(mezcal), licorice shows on oxidation... 7,4:The finish is medium long, dry, peppery, sugar cane honey is sweet, dark with licorice, red fruits are present and perhaps pencil shavings. Alcohol is well integrated...

Today two Mexican exotics. The 2022 Otto is already really intense on the nose with ginger, Ricola herbal candy, kumquat, allspice. The 2021 is much milder, more caramel-chocolatey. On the palate, the Otto feels like chewing on a piece of soap. The 2021 is much more pleasant here too. Both 'interesting' but the sample is really enough 😅

Well, a very different kind of rum, on the palate and finish it strongly reminds me of mezcal. On the nose, even after 30 minutes of resting, it smells musty and like cardamom. On the palate then musty, earthy, peppery with some sugarcane - like mezcal without the smoky part. Alcohol is very well integrated for the high ABV.

Something totally crazy here - part 2! Tastes like a light rum-mescal hybrid. A bit gentler and more agreeable than 21165 and more proof, which also comes clearly forward again. I actually find it a bit more boring, missing the edges and corners of 21165.

A unique style of rum that shares similarities to mezcal. The nose is fruity and barrel focused but the palate is dry and spice forward with subtle almost smoke while being exceptionally smooth with well integrated alcohol given the strength and age. You would never guess this is 70%. Never had a rum like this.

3x Cañada Alambique Serrano from Mexico: None of them really convinced me, so I'll stick with the three samples. Sweeter and more agreeable, but also more boring. Yellow fruits, honey... not undrinkable but nothing special either.

Not as intense as Otto’s High Dive SC. More traditional. Still, the mezcal impression remains. But alongside that, classic rum notes like chocolate, caramel, sugarcane.

Like the Tso'ok I had just before, fruit flies followed this smell to their death. Gonna clear my kitchen finally if I leave these to air. Some all spice and wood. A little caramel as well up front. In the mouth I get honey, sandalwood, some potpourri. Pours a clear maroon. Spicy in the long finish. Pretty good but not sure it's quite as potent on flavour as some of their best expressions.
