Velier Royal Navy Tiger Shark
Give it half an hour in the glass and it transforms. Straight from the bottle it can seem hot and a touch woody, but resting brings out banana, dried figs, tobacco, dark chocolate and burnt sugar. It's a British pot-still blend where heavy Guyana wood leads and Jamaican esters flicker underneath. Several tasters rank it among the best navy blends they've had.

Woody, spicy navy blend that rewards patience Most people call it one of the top navy blends around: complex, spicy, woody, with well-integrated alcohol. It needs air to open up, and the Guyana dominance isn't for everyone.

A Blend that represents the best in English rum. The influence of the different origins is felt, with an expressive nose on Jamaica (solvents, ester, tropical and ripe fruits), Guyana (caramel, sweetness, vanilla) and Trinidad (tar). The mixture is perfectly executed. The palate is carried on spices, chili, wood, tobacco and fruits, giving a heavy and intense profile. The finish is long, savory, with salty, burnt sugar and black tea notes on top. A simply luscious rum.

Great rum! If you want to find fault in every way then I say mixing rums from different distilleries is an interesting attempt, but in my humble opinion it breaks the magic a bit.

Tried again after some time. Very complex nose as well as palate. Alcohol well integrated but at times it is like it lacks that drive. The color is dark and warm as is the viscosity in the glass, tested with two different glasses. Over time it opens up even more and releases very enveloping hints as well as on the palate, but after a long time anyway it lacks that sprint I expected as with the first release. All in all it's very pleasant but nothing much. (PS: the rating, like the impressions, are purely personal)

Retasting this particular rum again. This time it's the 2nd release and it retains the score. This is a really nice and well balanced rum. I discovered that the longer it rested the more flavours were released. After 30 minutes in the glass it has reached its peak which is close to heaven. The proof has been nicely integrated into the blend and you barely get a burn from the alcohol. A great rum and the price tag matches the quality.

Very heavy on the Guyanese Pot Stills accompanied by some fruity notes from Jamaica
Review by Thunderbird
Esters, pineapple, and rubber immediately rise up! After some time in the glass, the nose softens and becomes mild, with caramel and a bit of vanilla. The palate is initially wild as well, slightly sour and fruity, then shifts to warm roasted woody notes... the finish is definitely warm, spicy, and dry! At the very end, a bit of fruitiness returns! A tasty, complex rum. Edit: In the Navy tasting, unfortunately, it loses a bit and is downgraded by 0.2 points.

Update from the tasting with Pierre: Blind tasting: guyana, port mourant, ca. 55%. Very good balanced blend! I like it a lot. Nose: woody, fruity ester, dried fruits, spicy, tobacco, raisin, vanilla, leather, caramel Mouth: dry, intense, delicious, balanced, heavy, complex, tobacco, toasted, woody, oak, peppery, leather, roasted, raisins, clove, ester, toffee, anise Finish: long, dry, delicous, warm, oak, tannins, black tea, bitter, astringend, raisns, roasted, prunes

The little brother of the grandiose Old Navy Rum from Velier. Very tasty with dominant Clarendon notes. Guyana also stands out. I'm looking in vain for Trinidad here. The alcohol is perfectly integrated. The finish cannot keep up with the palate experience. A great rum!
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
Very exciting blend. Flambéed banana, citrus marmalade, plenty of allspice, clove and a bit of menthol, and in the finish smoky tar and strong black tea with mandarin peel. A very rounded thing. To this day still a really well-made navy blend at a fair price.
Review by Oliver
Good rum, but for me the predecessor clearly wins. Versailles dominates. The refined Caroni base is unfortunately missing.
Review by Rene Pfeiffer
Nice fruity, spicy, woody, toasty and slightly sweet, but also tea and tobacco. Very pleasant. Intense full body on the palate and yet soft, matching the nose. Great blend. Absolutely recommended.
Review by Tschusikowsky
Difficult story for me, this 🥃 It is strong, intense like many Veliers, it tastes like Navy Rum. Great quality and balance in the many flavors that come at you. An endless nose to lie in, good full bodied but balanced palate. I have never tasted such good and complex craftsmanship out of an alcohol. Actually top. Unfortunately, something still sticks out in the palate and on the tongue that totally contradicts me, which clouds the experience badly. Have now then the bottle empty but have unfortunately not found out what it is (possibly something with the bitterness still present). Therefore, a not so good rating from me🥲
Review by MarcT
First Tasting was a bit overwhelming, the second one comes with more flavor and wood. Completely different to Pussers and Black Tot. Some drops of water also tempered the astringency, and brought some sweetness and fruit. Had this in the calendar as well, and realized this needs time to breathe and open up, obviously.
Review by cigares
The nose is both lively and subdued, spicy, vegetal (fresh tobacco) with old wood, dried fruit and leather. The palate is soft on entry, and the aromas immediately take over. A little spiciness/spiciness in the mid-palate masks the fruit a little, then the finish, elegant and smooth, long and complex, puts everyone in agreement. In direct comparison with Velier's Navy Rum RX26 and Black Tot 2020 RX4513, it seems a tiny bit weaker. But an excellent Navy Rum nonetheless!

9:On the nose, the first impression we get is very tempting with esters, tropical, dried fruits and roasted wood with nuts, caramel, vanilla. Some solvents are inevitable, but luckily in the background, as the molasses breaks through them easily. An aeration brings more metallic and tarry notes and differnt kind of fruits like unripe banana, raspberry, lemon peel, as molasses is dark with herbal notes, licorice, black tea and tobacco. Very balanced and round. 9:On the palate, the first attack is very intense, spicy and with the roasted wood. The storm quickly calms down as the rum becomes very balanced and round with its complexity as our tasting buds are swimming in delicious gemischt of vegetal, dark molasses notes as black tea, tobacco, mint, then earthy, toasted and a bit dry, tannic wood, dried figs and dates, overripe tropical fruits, some lime peel, as banana is unripe.Nicely sweet with some brown sugar, cream toffee, licorice and lastly a bit flowery. 8,9:The finish is very long, dry, with spicy and roasted, toasted, musty wood, molasses still dark, a bit bitter with black tea, tobacco, there are dried fruits, citrus and nice spectre of medicinal notes as tar and plastic.Flowers swim underneath. Edit:15.2.25 delicious, up 0,1

Very balanced Navy rum that offers something of everything. Only Wehrmutströpfchen is the comparatively too strong finish despite the mild nose. The aftertaste is but again super pleasant, in addition to fruity citrus notes, just the right amount of spicy smokiness that remains very long on the palate.
Review by Joachim Guger
A multi-layered nose. Solvents and esters (not too much of them). Warm cocoa notes, woody and spicy. Tropical fruit and plums. Warm, powerful, the alcohol stings a little. Super!!! 🤩 Spicy and complex in the mouth. Very nice finish. I particularly like the fine cocoa notes. Great rum, super PLV. Thanks to Michael!
Review by Basti
In the Navy Blend Blind Tasting, the Tiger Shark came out on top. The nose in particular is simply inviting and constantly releases new aromas. Both on the nose and on the palate, the Guyana part dominates for me with heavy aromas. Super navy blend with a very good PLV!!!

Got to taste this rum again today and raise it .4 points since last time. Really good. - Just got my own bottle and this is really good and I’m staying at my previous 8,9. - New day and it stays this time too.

RumX Advent Calendar 16.12.2021, blind And also already on 6.12.2020 in Alex's Christmas calendar. Blind!First impression: could be a Foursquare in the quality of a Sassafras, on the other hand...A blend of Jamaica and Guyana is already clear by the nose:Ester and neat spicy, solvent and sulfur. Fruity with sour cherry dried apricot, some pineapple and a hint of ripe banana. Spicy with vanilla, nutmeg, leather and wood. Tart sweetness of caramel and a bit of menthol.Strong spicy again on the palate with anise, nutmeg, sulfur iodine, salty bitter. Fruity with dark cherry and some plum. Woody, toffee and tidy tannins. Very nice, high quality blend.

New tasting quite different from the first one.I found a rather greedy and sweet nose, slightly woody, spicy and loaded in esters quite in accordance with what I remembered. In mouth, the first sensation is very woody and spicy then leaves slowly the place to more greediness with a slightly burnt sweetness. The finish is rather long and very appreciable.
Review by TheJona'Spirits
Tasting of a 3cl sample. 👃 Lots of wood variations, the cask gave back. I have a note of artichoke, not disturbing, then stem, sap and an evolution towards liquid caramel. Then, quite a lot of fruit, in light concentration.
Review by lars
I pushed my "pain threshold" further with this bottle. But I haven't regretted it for a moment. Perhaps a little "tame" for a navy rum - but a little more accessible and definitely an absolute recommendation. Especially for the price.
Review by Beancheese
Tasted alongside the Royal Navy rum from Velier. I could never have expected that I would dislike this one so much. The nose was intriguing - woody, spicy, raisin and fruit, a hint of florality with some dirtier tar and leather notes. Tasting this I was immediately hit by the heavy Guyana character - I am hot and cold with Guyana, some work for me while others are very off-putting and this one fell into the latter camp. There’s wood and spice and other things to be found in here but I was too put off to go in search for more. Not my rum though not objectively bad.
Review by Rodolphe
Really good. Exactly what I like in a navy blend. A delicacy.
Review by Agricoler
Excellent navy blend with a clear Guyana predominance. A nice portion of wood with plenty of dried fruit. But the Jamaica component also blends in brilliantly. Delicious all round and something for the cold season in my opinion.
Review by Jarek
The Tiger Shark doesn't have to hide behind any other Navy Blend, on the contrary, for me it ranks right at the top in this category. Still good and available at very reasonable prices. No rum cabinet should be without it.

Great blend. Fully met my expectations. The alcohol is extremely well integrated. Very tasty and still recommendable for the not-so-cheap price. Only just behind the Velier Royal in a direct comparison.
Review by mto75
tasted together with the Velier Very Old Navy. On the nose, both are quite similar at the beginning, the Tiger Shark reveals after some time in the glass then more citrus and floral notes, towards bergamot, even some green tea (reminiscent of the 97 Uitvlugt The Rum Cask). The Very Old Navy has more Caroni-typical notes on the nose. However, these are even more noticeable on the palate. The Tiger Shark goes more in the direction of bourbon in the finish. Overall, I find the Very Old Navy a bit more exciting, because it has a certain unique selling point due to the Caroni notes.
Review by Santo
Very good! But for me it's still below the 1st Velier Royal Navy edition.

Again blind tasting in the RX calendar. Had I based on the nose rather Richtig Guyana classified. The citrus fruits were not so present this time. The very good rating is confirmed.
Review by Maxime Leclerc 🇨🇵
the impression that the slight burn at the beginning was intended to hide notes that reveal themselves wonderfully in this long and fruity finish.
Review by Lukas Jäger
Great navy blend! Complex, multi-layered, round! I would love to drink this while sailing through the Caribbean or anywhere else. I imagine that I can taste Guyana, Jamaica and also a little Trinidad, but that's always a good try with a navy blend. If there's one thing to criticize, it's that the blend is a little too round, too tame. The finish is quite short and it could have a little more power. But that's complaining on a high level, I like this bottling!
Review by Michal S
One of the first really top-notch rums I tasted, it will always have a place in my heart. It boasts a delicate aroma with dried fruit and vanilla, with wood and a bit of bite to the taste. A truly successful blend, I recommend a taste.
Review by Timo Groeger
Wow, this is already heading towards world class. Great nose, woody, spicy, but also a little ester. On the palate, the picture is completely different for me. The herbs predominate here, with mint again standing out. Top part.
Review by Manuel
A great blend in which the fruity and first-rich notes are definitely noticeable. It is slightly behind the Velier Royal Old Navy Rum. Nevertheless, a very complex rum that I would like to recommend.
Review by Jussi Piirainen
I think this rum did sit in the glass for a good minutes 30 minutes before the review. Very fruity on the once I opened the bottle, but the notes change quite a lot depending how much you let the rum sit in the glass. On the nose: Guyana rum notes at first. Woody, roasted, burnt sugar. Light dried fruits and light leather notes. The more it sit in the glass, the more you get Trinidad rum notes like tobacco notes, and light herbal notes. Taste: Woody, spicy, leather, light coffee notes. Trinidad rum notes appear as the rum opens up more with notes like tobacco, light black tea and light herbal with some bitterness. The abv seems to be integrated very well. Finish: Woody, roasted, spices, black tea, light coffee notes and light dried fruit notes. Dry. Long finish. Excellent blended rum. Good integration of alcohol and the notes felt full bodied to the finish. Let it sit in glass and start finding your sweet spot for the best result. Have retaste this in future and maybe compare it againts to other navy rums

Unfortunately, the nose doesn't particularly appeal to me. The fermented fruit of the Jamaica portion and the wood remind me of rotten tree trunks. This dusty note continues on the palate. Not my cup of tea
Review by F.L.O.
The more I drink it, the higher the ranking goes. Wood, mint, slight "dirtiness." Among my top three Navy Rums. Price-performance is gigantic and you can still get it around 130 euros. Grab it!
Review by Djehey
As is often the case with bottles I enjoy, I find it hard to rate them, because I'd rather drink them than analyze them! When I opened this bottle, I thought Guyana 200%, but with oxidation, other players come to the fore, notably Jamaica and its esters (light in this case). The 3rd origin is perceptible but less present. There's a spiciness - which heats up and lingers in the middle - that may bother some, but it's something I like 😊 Bottles still available at 140€, that's a price-quality ratio that's hard to beat!
Review by Nivius
In fact, purely sensory, no rum has ever confused me as much as this one and I find its taste very unique. Most confused me, however, that my first association for this rum was with St.Lucia, followed by LongPond, Clarendon and Mount Gay. The only thing I can think of is the Guyana part, I just can't find it - or I haven't tried enough Guyanas yet. Surprisingly, despite the fruitiness of one of the driest rums that I had so far in the glass, the alcohol is super integrated and in the finish he has a wonderful long-lasting honeydew note. This rum is just awesome - even if I could never try its predecessor.
Review by Boletus
This is truly great blending art. The Tiger Shark has all the markers that a good navy rum must have and at the same time it is very round and multi-layered. It is ideal both for a headlong search for aromas and for relaxed enjoyment on the side.
Review by Martin Ekrt
The aroma has a clear Guyanese trace, perhaps with a slight hint of Trinidad. The taste is very strong and technical. Nice mix of esters from Jamaica, wild Guyana and light mint from Trinidad. Very long, warm finish. One of the top blends.
Review by Serge
Really awesome rum and one of my go to bottles when I just want to enjoy a snifter. Nice, spicy Guyana notes with fruity, Jamaican background music. Perfect for winter AND summer.
Review by Felix Reiber
This is a very successful and exciting Navy Blend. After a longer breathing time, the nose is extremely complex with wood, tropical fruits, spices, dried fruits, caramel, and vanilla. Ester-rich fruits like pineapple and banana lead over to raisin, leather, and tobacco. The palate is very delicious and intense. Notes of toasted wood, spices, dried apricot, and other overripe fruits are replaced by roasted tobacco, leather, cask notes, and caramel. @DomM aptly describes that the Pot Still Guyana rums and Jamaican rums set the tone. The long finish consists of wood, spices, raisins, and other dried fruits, burnt sugar, cask notes, prunes, roasted notes, and citrus fruits. This Navy Blend really has a lot to offer and is unbeatable at this price. Thanks to @Leo for the great sample 😀
Review by TheJackDrop
"A rare aromatic bomb! And superb complexity, spices, wood, esters, and a ripe fruitiness that I really like! To sum up, my tasting notes: Nose: Woody, Dried fruit, Tropical fruit, Ester, Vanilla, Tobacco, Solvents Taste: Woody, Intense, Toasted, Ester, Tobacco, Spicy, Barrel, Heavy, Leathery Finish: woody, spicy, burnt sugar, salty".
Review by Julien Ries
Very gourmand without being hyper powerful in esters, it evokes on the nose a solvent like Patex, pineapple, banana and other ripe exotic fruits, with other more complex mentholated notes. The attack on the palate is lively (the 57.18% immediately tears everything away) followed by aromas of dark chocolate, dried tobacco, and musky spices. The finish is powerful on spices and wood.
Review by Domi Mal
This one needs a little in the glass. Nose: Heavy, cloves, woody, vanilla, esters notes, dried fruit. The palate is dominated by Guyana, Versailles, ripe and woody, prune, esters, mineral - the "dirty" part from the Caroni goes down in this Navy. Very different profile than the first release. I did not like it immediately - but better and better, a great drop that needs time.
