Romdeluxe Long Pond Distillery Series Rum No. 1 TECC 2023
High-ester Long Pond diehards are the target here. Nail polish, glue, solvent and pineapple hit first, then overripe tropical fruit, young virgin oak and licorice once it breathes. At 85.3% it's astringent and biting, "very much brutal" as one taster put it — yet most agree the alcohol is shockingly well integrated. Give it plenty of air.
The community says- Massive ester funk
- Great ABV integration
- But: Very astringent

02.03.2024 Retasting at Whiskymessen and I stick to my score. ---------------------- #4522 14.12.2023 Went to visit Whisky Watcher in Odense for a very intimate tasting. This one is the bomb. The have hit the mark with the Virgin oak maturing. Very fruity with nice esters and a touch of licorice. The palate is nice and oily with fruits and nice licorice at the end. The finish is very long, dry and warm with stronger licorice notes. Very good ABV integration and beautiful curtains in the glass.

Retasting of Mirco’s Long Pond Teca/Tecc Community Tasting. I chose number 9 next because of the nose of the remaining 5-9, it was the least appealing to me or smelled only continentally aged. Very sharp with lots of solvents, glue, nail polish, esters... little wood, spice or fruit. On the palate somewhat better but still not my thing. Too aggressive, almost unaged. Maximum 1 year (if at all) in cask. Don't like it. Maybe as an addition for cocktails. Looking forward to the (hopefully) tropical ones 😉

This LP TECC packs quite a punch, but in a positive way. Ester and co. dominate the nose, of course, but subtle fruity notes (citrus/papaya) and a ginger/maggi mix are also perceptible. Top. On the palate, the over 80% cannot be ignored, but it doesn't have to be. After a short bite, a beautiful funkiness develops from esters, sour fruit, young wood and roasted aromas. That fits. The finish is quite long with a slight sweetness. A great bottling and a great start to the new RomdeLuxe series PS: the longer it stays in the glass, the better it gets. So give it a little more time Edit: Tasted again today in Mirco's blind tasting... my rating remains the same

Wow. This is very much brutal. Starts off intense and chemical with lots of esters (not much fruits though) on the nose. With some time in the glas vanilla and coconut from the cask show up Very strong and adstringent on the palate. Here you can see some influence of the Virgin oak (vanilla, sweetness) and a quite some fruity notes - again after some the to breath. Nice to see bottlings with this high ABV and craziness in the market, yet this doesn’t nearly excite me as much as the RdL HGML Virgin oak bottlings.

Tried it at HanseSpirit 2024 and it really blew me away. TECC is a real treat for me anyway, just my thing. And if these crazy high %% are so well integrated, then I should take some more time for it. So I took a small sample with me. Nose: very intense, as expected. Ester with lots of fruit and buttery-caramel sweetness, almost toffee. If you give it some time in the glass, pineapple, passion fruit, kiwi and lemon appear. The lemon is somewhat reminiscent of washing-up liquid. The esters change from nail polish to vinegar to umami and there is even a slight smokiness at the very end. The %% is there, but very well integrated. Wow, 8.8 Palate: fierce, but fiercely good. The most intense esters. More is not possible. 1600! Very astringent, very warm and slightly bitter at the beginning. Then come the overripe fruit components of pineapple and kiwi with citrus. Sweetness of pineapple marzipan, also slightly woody at the back. Sure, the high ABV also burns properly, but overall you don't have the feeling of having over 85% in your mouth. That's why it scores 8.7. Crazy and at the same time great that RdL has the courage to bottle something like this (once again). Thanks for that! Addendum: even after brushing your teeth twice and having a coffee in the morning, you still have these esters in your gums, crazy.

Online tasting of various TECA and TECC organized by Mirco. First of all, many thanks for the great split to be able to try them all side by side. Now I had to readjust a few ratings.

8,5:On the nose, esters, nail polish, slightly alcoholic, funky, intense, concentrated, overripe tropical fruits, fermented with vinegar, roasted wood with chocolate, nuts, vegetal molasses, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, the rum becomes a bit pungent, citrus fruits arise, the wood is spicy with vanilla, slightly resinous, another layer of roasted notes join with caramel, toffee, buttery, some rubber. 8,6:On the palate, the attack is intense, strong, funky with esters, solvents, glue, pungent with fermented, overripe tropical and citrus fruits, sour, the molasses is vegetal with briny olive, dark with licorice, as the wood is rossted, creamy, smoky with nuts, caramel, bacon, sourdough bread, spicy, meaty. 8,6:The finish is long, dry&tannic, oily, warm with medicinal and fermented tropical, citrus fruits, some candied, pairing smoky, spicy oak and grassy, candied molasses.

Thanks to Thunderbird for the sample. Really strong stuff, love these over 80%. Definitely intense and funky, also nail polish and solvent are noticeable. On the palate also quite fruity.

I'm really into LP and also high esters, but I didn't really warm to this TECC. Glue, esters, solvents, spices and something sour on the nose. For over 85% ABV, the alcohol is actually very well integrated, but I miss the complexity here. These very young TECA/TECCs are not really my cup of tea.

An exotic. Full broadside of varnish and esters. I like it very much.

Phew, the alcohol is really well integrated for the 85%. Another extraordinary ester monster!

Tasted at the Hanse Spirit 2024 With its 85.3%, it's an absolute winner. But as with the previous bottlings in the ABV range, it is well integrated and has a very intense flavor. It is very smooth in the mouth and lingers for a long time. For me, it can't quite keep up with the somewhat smoother HGML, but it's still a great bottling!
Review by Master P
He really surprised me. Really good intensity and funk from the high proof rum, with an impressive balance and complexity from just 7 months of continental maturation in a small virgin cask. Both the nose and the taste are simply superb. I think I'll have to get myself another bottle.
Review by Buddudharma
Nice profile, but no one really needs rums with >80% to drink straight. The price doesn't really fit either, as is often the case with RdL.

Tasted with Kevin on the beach in Blåvand. Wow, what a blast! The nose is naturally full of esters, funk and fruit. After a while and when it has slowly warmed up, it gives off softer notes of butterscotch, a certain mild creaminess. On the palate, it really gets going! Numb teeth and you first have to let the 85% ABV sink in and give the mucous membranes in your mouth time to come to terms with it. Then you're rewarded with lots of funky esters and great fruits, you pump a lot of air and can enjoy a really great, long finish. Great stuff!

A very very very powerful rum! On the nose, it's fantastic, with esters, glue, solvents all wrapped in very ripe fruits, a real treat. On the palate, that's where the 85° reveal themselves, this is absolutely not a rum for amateurs. It's very powerful. I had to let it rest for 20/30 minutes to drink it more easily, but many aromas had disappeared.
Review by Schnubbii
On the nose rather sweet, not as funky as the Velier bottlings. On the palate also a lot of sweetness, the Virgin Oak makes itself felt. But also a lot of glue, the TECC DNA is recognizable. The 85% push quite a bit, but are still comparatively well integrated for the quantity. A powerhouse and somewhere an experience, but certainly not a rum for every day.

Another very high abv rum. On the nose:Esters, nail polish notes, overripe pineapples. Oily. Little bit of toffee and vanilla too. Intense. Taste: Now this is intense and strong. Slightly oily mouthfeel. Fruity notes, glue notes. Medicinal. Licorice notes appear to the palate at the end. Finish: Warm and oily mouthfeel at first that developes to dry at the end. Pineapple notes. Light woody notes. Light licorice notes. Light molasses notes. It takes few sips to get used to this intense high abv and its pretty good palate that is more on esters, glue, medicinal and licorice side once you" find your way over there" through intensity.

I like the very high percentage from Romdeluxe. I was able to try the DOK at Kevin's, it was also amazing. Unfortunately a bit expensive at 100 euros for 0.5l unaged 😅.

Might be the best Jamaican I've had. It really surprised me. Really good intensity and funk from the high-ester rum, with an impressive balance and complexity from the just 7 month continental aging in a small virgin cask. I had to buy two bottles and can only rate it up the among the best Demerara rums I've had from Velier. Both the nose and the taste is just wonderful. Try it if you can!
Review by Martin Ekrt
Quite pungent for the nose and looking at the ABV it's no wonder. Load of esters, overripe fruit and chemistry. I only took a little sip to be safe and did well. First impression is a massacre, which in the end turns into pleasant tropical fruit and molasses. Next sip much friendlier. Good but more reasonable dilution would be better.
