If you like oaky, dry, Foursquare-style rum, this 2006 TDL is aimed squarely at you. Several tasters clock it as "very Foursquare like" — American oak, vanilla, caramel, coffee and mocha, with woody spice and a hint of menthol on the finish. A few open it up with water and get more fruit. Note: some found it flat and one-note, closer to an easygoing Spanish-style column rum.

I actually wanted to split this rum a year ago, but it met with little interest. On the second attempt it finally worked. Personally, I had no great expectations and was more than positively surprised. Overall a classy bottling that I can only recommend.

This TDL doesn't really convince me. If it had some cherry aromas, it could easily pass as Ten Cane... I'm missing any mint or menthol. However, the alcohol is quite well integrated.

8,4:On the nose, the first impression we get is very similar as Foursquare with roasted wood notes like caramel, nuts, coffee, spices with cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, bourbon yellow fruits and coconut.A molasses is a bit floral, there is some tobacco and menthol. On aeration, the fruits are dried with apricots, citrus pops up and burnt sugar. 8,5:On the palate, the attack is again very Foursquare like, with its main characteristics, pleasant, delicious. The molasses is vegetal, as some tobacco is noticed, there is menthol.After resting, egg yolk note is pretty obvious, actually pleasant, some licorice and pear make their presence. 8,5:The finish is long, dry with roasted, spicy wood, creamy, egg yolk note still here, some mint nicely rounds up some bitter notes...

Great T.D.L here. Great nose, mostly woody, but also some vanilla and mocha are recognizable. On the palate also lots of wood and cask, plus some vanilla and, in my opinion, quite spicy but really tasty.

I couldn't find any 2006 TDLs in my tasting history. Before Rum Artesanal discovered the 2001s and CDI (a few years earlier) the 2003s, TDL was a distillery with a very mediocre reputation. Very arbitrary rums in the Spanish style, too sweet, too insignificant. I have no high expectations for these 2006s from Precious Liquors and the Steampunk from Zero Nine Spirits, just expect this boring Spanish style. The very first impression on the nose confirms this. Blind, I would never have thought of a TDL here. I can't find any of the typical markers right away. The nose is even more boring than the Steampunk, which at least brings this wild banana note. Apart from vanilla, caramel, minimal core fruit and some phenols, I find nothing. On the palate very similar, but a slight smokiness creates the hint of an interesting aroma. While the Steampunk with this unusual tropical fruit at least causes some irritation, the best thing you can say about this is that it is never unpleasant, but it rarely rises above the perception threshold. One of the most boring rums I've ever tried and proof why TDL was once considered an insignificant distillery.

Delicious stuff. With water it really opens up and becomes spicier in taste. Then there's also a slight mint note in the finish. Nice interplay of spice, roasted aromas, fruit and mint in the finish!

So tonight I'm trying a bunch of post 2000 TDL's. All above 60%. Lucky me...tough job ;) Wigman is one of the most well known Dutch whisky connaisseurs. This is his second released rum, besides a very heavy yet classic flavoured Caroni. His bottles are pricy but high end and good quality. Let's see how this one is doing. Nose: American Oak/Bourbon/vanilla. More on the woody/spices side than fruitiness. Still some berries though. Elegant for 62%. Taste: yeah definitely a very Amerikan Oak driven TDL. Which is interesting and not overly common for this distillery (I get why a whisky guy chose this). Big in flavours yet still elegant. Not a dirty edge. Clean. Very well balanced. Very TDL but also bot quite so. Fruit has def been pushed to the back by the fruit. Cognac. Overall: a very decent US oaky TDL which sets itself apart from most TDLs in style. Not much berry. Not a diesel-y or dirty edge. Balanced...yes.

The TDL 2006 vintage doesn't quite convince me most of the time. Here, too, I would put the rum more in the column style like a continental Foursquare or Panama: chocolate, vanillin from the oak barrel, a little wood, but not much more.

Silver advent calendar RFC 2024. Lately, TDL has really been fun for me, so I was really looking forward to this one too. The nose is full of vanilla, wood, sweet caramel tones but also hints of technical notes. On the palate, it's a dense oily piece, initially sweeter, then fruit shows through and it transitions into pleasant hints of oak. Very nice piece.

Develops with some oxidation an irritatingly intense fruit note that slides into artificial. Besides that, there are rather the aromas for which TDL was known before the 2000s and which brought the distillery close to representatives of the Spanish style - oak wood, caramel, vanilla sugar, subtle molasses aromas. The 2006 vintage seems to play here as a kind of reminiscence of the earlier years and thus clearly stands out in the post-2000s era. Although aromatically complex, it is not simultaneously balanced and subjectively too little inspiring. But it will surely find lovers elsewhere, an interesting release on a higher level.
