La Confrérie du Rhum Saint James Brut de fût 2003

"Probably the best St. James in my mind," one taster says — and this 2003 vintage agricole earns that with a heavy, wood-forward profile: dried fruit, tobacco, dark chocolate and roasted coffee, with red fruits and a fresh menthol note keeping it lively. At 59% it's big and slightly bitter. A couple of members note it can tip too woody, and the alcohol needs taming.

  • Dried fruit depth

How does La Confrérie du Rhum Saint James Brut de fût 2003 taste?

From community reviews · summarized with AI

Heavy, woody Martinique agricole with dried fruit Loved for its layered, intense wood-and-dried-fruit character with a very long peppery finish. The recurring catch: some find it too woody and bitter, and the ABV runs hot.

The St. James I had in my glass were often typically woody, "green" agricoles. Just like this one. A very dry representative, with dark dried fruits. Leather, tobacco and wood. Fantastic!

More on the spicy/roasty side. Delicious, but almost too woody in the finish for my taste. Mild, despite the rather high alcohol content for an Agricole. Points deducted because of the excessive wood influence, otherwise it would be more like 8.5-8.6.

Very concentrated and intense after mocha, vanilla, leather, tobacco and grassy sugar cane, very bitter, tannic and very woody, yet still with a slight fruitiness of raisin and banana. Alcohol could be a little better integrated and it is overall too woody and bitter for me, but it is beautifully complex and intense!

So I did the Velier vintages of St. James in a row a while back. Decided to open this as a desert. With an ABV if 59 instead if 47% it was a lot heavier...but still delicious. So lots of red fruits in the nose: Cherry. Black currant. Strawberry. Frenck oak with that typical hint of acidity. This breathes thick flavours. In the mouth: very big on the red fruits. A cognac/armagnac feel but also fresh. Port. Lot's of flavours. Very good. Seriously layered. Woody yet fresh. This is agricole quality. Definitely worth the 120+ euros it goes for.

This is probably the best St. James in my mind and I do have a backup bottle on the shelf. The nose is very well balanced with spices, fruit and tobacco. In the back i can find oak and a bit of leather. The palate is complex and really intense. Dried fruit and lots of spices with roasted coffee and a hint of leather. There is a slight but good bitterness. The finish is extremely long, slightly bitter and pepper spicy with some raisins.

A dream the nose! Tropical fruit, dark, tobacco, spices, coffee, chocolate. Lots of wood, perfectly balanced on the upper edge. Empyreumatic the French would say.Powerful and balanced in the mouth. Coffee and dried banana on the finish.Great Agricole. Perfect play with barrel aging. Nice that we now really have a wide selection of Agricoles.

Rums from Saint James are often characterized by dark, bitter and spicy components. This one too. Less fruit, less caramel, less sweet, but lots of tobacco, bitter wood and dry spicy sharpness. Doesn't fully convince me.

nice, round St. James, on the nose many spicy notes towards clove and allspice, in the background a certain (green) freshness.

Spicy and woody nose with some red fruit, chocolate and tobacco. On the palate spicy notes, especially cinnamon, some pepper and a touch of vanilla, then wood and premature red fruits typical of the distillery. On the finish, which remains quite long and lingering, also come toasty hints, others slightly sour, dark chocolate and after a few minutes some aftertaste of mold and leather. Exquisite, it has a Christmassy feel to it, too bad only for the cinnamon, which I don't like in general as a spice, otherwise it would have gotten a higher rating. Thank you Oliver for the opportunity!

Ah.... Great satisfaction with this rum. It's Martinique with great intensity. The profile leans towards woody and roasted. Nevertheless, despite that, the fruits, jammy, are also well present and balance this mouth by bringing indulgence. The nose is also carried by a menthol. Long and persistent finish. Top.

The alcohol comes in my opinion in the palate a little strong, otherwise very tasty, spicy and complex. Even if I am not yet a big fan of Agricole, so I like this rum very much, v.a. because the grassy notes do not dominate too strongly.

Interesting expression from Saint James.. lots of spices (vanilla, pepper, cardamom), with a nice balance of fruit (grapes, red fruits and dried figs) and wood from the barrel. Given the above, I find this rum a little bit to “muted” for my taste

In the nose really one of the best rums I've ever had. But in the taste then a tick too musty in the finish. An ideal rum for people who want to slowly approach Agricoles.

The nose is clearly almost exclusively on the woody and other empyreumatic notes (roasted coffee, leather, tobacco, ...) as well as some hints of fruit (apple, cherry). You immediately know it's Saint-James, no doubt about it! Some spicy notes (pepper-vanilla) conclude this promising nose. This stuff is seriously concentrated! Little tip: let it air for a few minutes to enjoy its nose. The attack on the palate is frank and vigorous. The alcohol is present, you have to tame the 59%. On the palate, no surprise, wood.

The nose has the typical Saint James profile. We get wood, vanilla and tropical fruits. Despite long aging there is some kind of brightness in the nose, in the sense of freshness. Alcohol seems to be well integrated. In the mouth, oh, this is a big one! Impressive! Again that brightness, along side tropical fruits, mango and chocolate. Then towards the finish there is a slight bitter and a menthol fresh note. It even brings a grassy agricole note as if it was young. Great piece of work that takes you on a rum trip with all its waves of flavour. Very drinkable despite its age and ABV.

Very dark color, mahogany. On the first sip, an explosion of fruity, spicy (pepper) flavors despite the strong presence of alcohol, contrasting with the clear woody dominance on the nose. Very good length on the woody, fruity, indulgent notes.

What a Rhum!! At first it was just your regular single cask Saint James profile, which is great as it is value wise anyways. 2 ice cubes did the trick though, it really opened up. Phenomenal!
