Sip this one neat and go slow — at 63.3% it opens with a wall of smoke that reads more like a peated whisky or mezcal than a Demerara PM. Behind the campfire sit coffee, mokka, dark chocolate and charred oak, with a bitter, peaty finish that grows on you across the glass. The cask does most of the talking; the classic Port Mourant character gets buried under it.

Un rhum très fumé qui plaira aux amateurs de whisky tourbé et de mezcal.

Ce Guyanais est l'un des rhums les plus difficiles d'accès que j'ai pu goûter. Si au nez nous sommes sur des marqueurs typiques des rhums de la Guyane, avec ses esters bien présent, rempli de tabac froid, de goudron et autres pétrole, la bouche possède tout ce que j'aime pas chez les whiskys de type Islay. L'alcool est bien intégré malgré ses 63° et quelques. Il y a un côté fortement tourbe fumée, iodée, qu'on retrouve sur un Talisker ou un Lagavulin, qui précède des marqueurs de vieux cuir, de boîte à cigare. A l'aveugle, je n'aurais jamais cru que je buvais un rhum. Pas du tout ma came et je n'ai pas pu finir mon verre.

Very smoky overall. The nose is quite dark, with notes of caramel, toasted wood and, above all, intense smoke. This aspect is even more striking on the palate, which might even be mistaken for a mezcal or a smoked whisky. Very interesting, though, for a change.

The nose has aromas you'd expect from a PM mixed with the aromas of a horse stable. It goes down from here. The taste is all charred barrel. Bitter and charred. Not my cup of tea.

Oh well, unfortunately I can't drink the rum. The whisky cask is full of strong peat/meat/campfire aromas. You can't really taste PM anymore.
