Sipped neat is where this Indonesian arrack earns its keep — a cask-strength pot-still spirit finished in sweet wine that runs vegetal and dry more than sweet. Green pepper, eucalyptus and saffron on the nose, then grapes, red fruits, candied mandarin and roasted nuts on the palate. Several tasters liked the wine finish but felt the cask slightly buries the base distillate. Firmly an oddity for the curious.

Arra(c)k 2.0 tasting by Artur. Sweetness on the nose, herbs, apple and yellow fruit. The influence of the sweet wines used for finishing is also evident. The attack is soft on the palate, with yellow fruit and sour apple. The finish is long, slightly bitter and woody, still with yellow fruits. A very special arrack because of its finish.

8:On the nose, vegetal with green peppers, eucalyptus, flowery, herbaceous, sweet with roasted wood notes like cream toffee, nuts, chocolate or fudge, buttery, spicy with vanilla. On aeration, citrus fruits with mandarine are out, more vegetal bias with red bell peppers and saffran. 7,8:On the palate, the attack is quite dry with wine notes like grapes, red fruits, perhaps sour cherry, citrus fruits, flowery, vegetal sugarcane, later grassy, herbaceous, roasted wood notes like almonds, cocoa, slightly smoky with crunchy bread, spicy with allspice.When the arrack is well rested, it becomes sulphurous, soapy. 7,6:The finish is medium long, dry, bitter, as the vegetal (saffran, eucalyptus), herbaceous, pairs citrus fruits and roasted wood notes, spicy and slightly smoky. And the last Arrak, was an interesting trip, the Arrack taste has certainly burned into me. Thanks to Artur and Zabo for sharing. Here again the interesting Arrack taste, as well as red fruits. Delicious finish :)

Once again an outstanding tasting that Artur organized superbly. Many thanks for the introduction to the world of Arra(c)k. The blends are truly a challenge for the taste buds. But what really surprised me was this BASF bottling. My deepest respect for the time and effort that is repeatedly invested there. A real honor to be able to participate in such tastings again and again.

Arrac(k)-Tasting 2.0 by Artur. An exciting tasting journey with an impressive range of styles and profiles. From smoky to fruity to spicy, everything was represented – partly a bit unbalanced, partly surprisingly round. Especially some bottlings showed a lot of character and depth and stayed in memory. A format that is really fun. Thanks Artur for the opportunity! 😊

Unfortunately the finish was not well utilized. A bit rounder and then we might have seen an 80 rating.

Cask slightly overpowers the distillate, not well integrated. Promising but unfortunately not enough for an 8. Arra(c)k Attack 2.0 tasting with Artur all over the place, from really nasty blends to surprisingly good representatives, everything included. Great journey to this spirit completely unknown to me until now.

Wonderfully delicious Batavia Arrack with a sweet wine finish. Candied fruit, mandarin and passion fruit, roasted nuts, eucalyptus, saffron, red pepper and burnt caramel. Very pleasant to drink and very fairly priced. Highly recommended!
