Sip this one neat and slow — it's a wild ride. The nose throws olives, brine, dried herbs and a whiff of yeast, with red fruit and red wine underneath. The palate flips it: olive water and brine up front, more red fruit, a malty, almost whisky-ish edge. At 55% it's savory and salty far more than sweet. One taster nailed it as "not typical of a rum" — and that's the whole point.

Renegade are not my favourite rums and here it is confirmed again. I can smell the sweetish taste of prawns, which just doesn't suit me with rum. But it's definitely more drinkable for me than the HV Renegade, where I'm not even able to finish a glass.

The smell is nothing like New Bacolet. It's kind of bland, a little dried fruit, a little saltiness. The palate is also more subtle and approachable. At the same time, it's not a memorable piece, which is a bit of a shame. I would take it as an aperitif, though.
