"Sweet and simple," as one taster put it — that's the honest read here. Expect honey, caramel, vanilla and roasted coffee up front, with banana, raisin and a woody backbone underneath. Most find it soft, mild and gently sweet, easy to sip. A few pick up an artificial, almost perfumed note, and several say the cheaper Centenario 20 does much the same thing.

Now also the 25y times in the glass! Foreground honey / caramel, vanilla and roasted coffee! In addition, banana, raisin and coconut resonates from time to time. In the mouth moderately sweet and mild, continuing the nose. Chocolate and coffee are found more in the finish, making for a delicious and round experience. I don't remember the 30y being this good, which is also significantly sweeter!

A second sample of the Centenario 25 has been bobbing around in my cellar for 1.5 years. Now, on vacation, I "dare" to try it again and have to say that I am even more disappointed than the first time. Very flat on the nose, but then mineral notes on the palate, such as brine, and after about 5 seconds in the mouth it becomes artificial, almost perfumed. Some coffee in the finish, but nothing really interesting that could captivate me in any way. A disappointment for me and a benevolent rating of mediocre.

This is a medium priced rum and they did pretty well. A very flavourful rum with lots of wooden notes and fruit. Not too sweet, but nicely balanced and medium complexity. Price to quality is very good.

Smell: First impression: caramel and vanilla. Followed by dried plums, woody and slightly earthy notes. Taste: A pleasant sweetness smoothly coats the tongue. Clearly recognizable vanilla, followed by caramel, raisins, and spice. Finish: A slight chili-like spiciness combined with well-measured sweetness. *Retasting in combination with the 9, 12, 20, and 30. Compared to the others, it comes across as the sweetest of the five. However, it outshines the younger bottlings with a more complex and diverse body. Due to the small price differences, I would personally always go for the 25. Since the 30 is already playing in a different price league.

A truly amazing rum at a great price. It’s a very smooth drink with nice sweet and complex notes on the nose. Starting from the top and working towards it with the nose presents the sweeter notes then brings in the more nuanced ones such as the woody scent from the barrels. First sip is a bit strong but after letting it breathe a bit yields a flavor palate that’s a bit smoother and sweeter.

I found the smell fresh, with an alcoholic note. It runs nicely down the glass. Taste-wise I find it sweet, not too sweet, mild and woody. In summary it was good but not outstanding.

My RumRatings review from 5 years ago: The rum has a pleasantly light nose with fruity notes. Sweet wood and caramel notes are also present. It's quite fun to explore this rum. It's very similar to the Solera 20 but actually has some recognizable complexity. Then comes the rude awakening when drinking. Heavy sweetness spreads on the tongue. Caramel, vanilla, and banana are noticeable but the rum is dominated by sugar. The finish still has some sharpness and woody cask notes desperately try to unfold. That typical sticky feeling in the mouth is left by this sugar bomb as well. The Solera 25 doesn't really differ from the Solera 20 and is similarly agreeable. Overall, for around 60 euros, it's rather disappointing. There are really better options out there. If you like it very sweet, you'll like the Centenario. It's a bit more versatile than the Solera 20. A bit more wood and fruit. But given the higher price, no real recommendation to buy and no big improvement in rating compared to the 20. I'd actually prefer to buy the Solera 18 instead.

Top rum, but not really worth the extra cost. Very similar to the Centenario 20, but a bit stronger and sharper, yet still very very mild. Those who like that will rate it higher, but in my opinion, it's not better than the 20-year-old.

What can I say, I'm pretty disappointed 😞 I was really looking forward to the 25-year-old, but for me, it's not an upgrade from the 20-year-old. A flat, one-dimensional nose where I really had to strain to smell anything at all. No, I'm not sick. On the palate, thin, watery, and little complexity for 25 years. The finish is also short, with few memorable flavors. My conclusion: If I had to choose, I would pick the 20-year-old without hesitation, which is superior in every category and costs significantly less! What a shame 🤷🏻♂️
