Sipped neat at cask strength, this is where the mulberry-wood cask takes over completely — tobacco, salty licorice and a bacon-fat smokiness that one taster calls "speckig-rauchig." Underneath sits blackberry fruit and a little vanilla, but the wood runs the show. It's part of an experimental single-cask project, and members enjoyed exploring it more than they loved it straight.

7,2:On the nose, the first impression we get is medicinal, burnt with rubber, fruity with berries, the wood is roasted, smoky with meaty, bacon notes, spicy with vanilla, as the molasses is dark with licorice, earthy with tobacco, musty, metallic patina arises. 7:On the palate, the attack is dry, oily, medicinal(iodine) with various roasted, smoky, burnt notes like chocolate, caramel, bacon, sweet&salty, the molasses is dark with licorice, earthy with tobacco, the fruits are pears. 6,9;The finish is medium long, oily, dry, with nutty oak, cardboard, green fruits, licorice and tobacco..

Cask talk No. 12 Mulberry vs. No. 01 Base Rum. The additional 6 months in the new-make mulberry wood cask have darkened the color by a full 10 shades. Nose: you can tell it's a highly aromatic wood. It takes over completely. The rum now seems older and more mature than the base. No longer alcoholic and with lime and caramel notes. Now it is spicy-woody, has a slightly medicinal - plaster - note at the start, then gets a distinct tobacco note. Plus sweetness from crystal sugar. The fruit goes into berry territory, blackberry. It's good. 7.9 Palate: clear transformation of the base, even though the basic aromas remain similar. The sweetness intensifies towards salty, soft licorice and the slight smokiness moves towards intense tobacco notes. These are accompanied by oily-bacon-like tonka bean. Nicely intense, but a bit too much tobacco. 7.7

Wagemut Cask Language Project (Cask Strength) It is to be expected that for such a project the best possible rum is not used. The base rum is comparatively spirited without special characteristics. 1st Flight: Base Rum / all Oaks Interesting how much the differences in individual oak types are. Mizunara especially surprised me. 2nd Flight: Base Rum / Special Woods Incredibly different, everything from bad to good was there. Many thanks for this interesting project.

Daring cask language, 16 times the same base rum aged in barrels each made of different wood. Very interesting project (thanks to Flo for sharing). Very peculiar, with slightly medicinal notes and rather on the spicy side, but good.

Absolutely great project. I only learned about it through the Rum X campaign. It's a lot of fun to explore. The YouTube videos are super informative too. Good choice of base product, good alcohol integration. American: classic 6.3 German: spicy-woody 6.6 French: velvety-oily 7.3 Kiri: surprise 7.4 Mizunara: good complexity 7 Walnut: little influence 6 Chestnut: not so distinctive 6 Mulberry: iodine/smoky 6.2 Cherry: dense 6.8 Pear: normal 6 Ash: orange 6.1 Tokaji: sawdust Caucasian: woody, fruity, fresh 6.4 Carpatian: European Bourbon 7.4 Acacia: multi-layered 7 A somewhat longer maturation would have been even better to bring out the nuances more. But that’s something you have to manage first. Overall, there are already remarkable differences in how it developed. Hats off for the project, very fun and interesting.

Die seltene Maulbeere bringt tiefgründige, dunkle Aromen - würzig, rauchig, elegant - und transformiert die Basis deutlich.
