Opinions land all over the place on this one, mostly because it's an experiment first and a sipper second: the same young Trinidad base rum given six extra months in French oak. Reviewers get vanilla, maple syrup and a soft apricot-citrus sweetness on the nose, then woody, nutty spice with nutmeg and a touch of licorice. Fuller and rounder than the raw base, but still young and spirit-forward at 62.5%.

Cask language No. 03 French Oak vs. No. 01 Base Rum. The additional 6 months in new-make oak barrel have darkened the color by 9 levels. 2 more than the American Oak. Nose: again clearly fuller and rounder than the base. Initially also alcoholic, but that fades faster. Strong vanilla and maple syrup sweetness, fragrant, sweet apricot with citrus, mealy banana and some passion fruit. Not this tart citrus-caramel note. Yes, definitely has something of brioche. I like it. 7.7 Palate: clearly fuller and more aromatic than the base. Woody-spicy at first, nutty-bitter, somewhat bacon-like. Nutmeg, vanilla and a hint of licorice, less salty-bitter, less young. Very similar to the American Oak, maybe a bit less (due to finer pores?). 7.5

I got it from Michael, what can I say. The high-proof cask character doesn't really convince me, unfortunately. Wood is definitely noticeable, also some spice, but that certain something is missing here. Quite okay, that's it.

A very interesting and elaborate project with all the different cask types and the same base rum. There are definitely some strong differences to taste, in my opinion. But actually, I found the classics best, like the French oak.

Daring barrel language, the same base rum aged 16 times in barrels each made of different wood. Very interesting project (thanks to Flo for sharing). A bit fruitier and lighter than No.2 American Oak. Also sweeter on the palate. Overall a bit finer, but I liked No. 2 better.

Absolutely great project. I only learned about it through the Rum X action. It's a lot of fun to explore. The YT videos are also super informative. Good choice of base product, good alcohol integration. American: classic 6.3 German: spicy-woody 6.6 French: velvety-oily 7.3 Kiri: surprise 7.4 Mizunara: good complexity 7 Walnut: little influence 6 Chestnut: not so distinctive 6 Mulberry: iodine/smoky 6.2 Cherry: dense 6.8 Pear: normal 6 Ash: orange 6.1 Tokaji: sawdust Caucasian: woody, fruity, fresh 6.4 Carpatian: European Bourbon 7.4 Acacia: multilayered 7 A slightly longer maturation would have been even better to bring out the nuances more. But you have to manage that first. Overall, there are already remarkable differences in how it has developed. Hats off to the project, very fun and interesting.

Wagemut Cask Language Project (Cask Strength) It is to be expected that for such a project the best possible rum is not used. The base rum is comparatively spirituous without special character. 1st Flight: Base Rum / all Oaks Interesting how much the differences are between individual oak types. Mizunara surprised me especially. 2nd Flight: Base Rum / Special Woods Insanely different, everything from bad to good was there. Many thanks for this interesting project.

An impressively rich, smooth, and complex rum that gives the base rum more aromatic depth and elegant sweetness - especially influenced by the French oak, known for its fine porosity and high-quality wood notes. An excellently successful example of how selective cask selection can significantly influence the character of a maturation project.
