Sharp lemon and lime hit first, chased by green apple, black currant and a hot alcoholic bite that reminds you it's only 3 years old at 63%. This is the deliberately plain base rum of Wagemut's Fasssprache wood-experiment set — young, spirity, with nutmeg and black pepper on the palate. Give the alcohol a minute and citrus zest comes through. Meant as a blank canvas, not a finished sipper.

What can I say, this rum is very alcoholic on the nose and palate. Once the alcohol has evaporated, you can still recognize lime, lemon, lime zest and lemon peel.

Absolutely great project. Only learned about it through the Rum X action. Lots of fun to explore. The YT videos are also mega informative. Good choice of base product, good alcohol integration. American: classic 6.3 German: spicy-woody 6.6 French: velvety-oily 7.3 Kiri: surprise 7.4 Mizunara: good complexity 7 Walnut: little influence 6 Chestnut: not so defining 6 Mulberry: iodine/smoky 6.2 Cherry: dense 6.8 Pear: normal 6 Ash: orange 6.1 Tokaji: sawdust Caucasian: woody, fruity, fresh 6.4 Carpatian: European Bourbon 7.4 Acacia: multilayered 7 A somewhat longer maturation would have been even better to bring out the nuances more. But you have to manage that first. Overall, there are already considerable differences in how it has developed. Hats off for the project, very fun and interesting.

I'm going step by step into Nicolas's super interesting cask language project; of course, the one with a good 63%. Thanks to Alex for sharing. I'll start with the base rum... Nose: initially very alcoholic and sharp alcoholic; after all, it's only 3 years old. Once the alcohol dissipates, fruity aromas emerge. Lemon and lime, plus green apple and sweet-sour blackcurrants. Over time it softens, gains caramel notes, almost toffee, and banana, accompanied by wood and vanilla. Has a lot of bourbon cask character. 7.1 Palate: alcoholic and bitter-salty at first. Plenty of nutmeg and black pepper before apple, lime peel, and some mirabelle join in. Seems young, roasted, and a bit meaty. 6.5 Definitely needs more aging to be good but is very suitable as a base for this project. I'm curious...

Daring barrel language, the same base rum aged 16 times in barrels each made from different wood. Very interesting project (thanks to Flo for sharing). The base rum is no revelation, so you shouldn't expect a great pleasure from the other 15 either. On the other hand, the base should perhaps be as neutral as possible so that the barrel influences are more noticeable. Overall no sample that I would need more of, but still super interesting and well executed. The rating rather reflects my personal order within the 16 samples and is less suitable for comparison with usual bottlings.

Wagemut Cask Language Project (Cask Strength) It is to be expected that the best possible rum is not used for such a project. The base rum is comparatively sharp without special characteristics. 1st Flight: Base Rum / all Oaks Interesting how much the differences are between individual oak types. Mizunara surprised me especially. 2nd Flight: Base Rum / Special Woods Insanely different, everything from bad to good was included. Many thanks for this interesting project.
