Part of the Wagemut Fasssprache project — the same Trinidad base rum aged an extra six months in different woods, this one in new-make Carpathian oak. Members find it spicy, earthy and dry: nutmeg, lime peel, green apple and a woody, peppery backbone, with a touch of caramel and vanilla the base lacks. At 62.2% the alcohol stays sharp. Most agree the cask adds character but not a huge amount.

I got it from Michael, what can I say. It doesn't really convince me, the high-proof barrel character, unfortunately. Wood is at least recognizable, also some spice, but it lacks that certain something here. Quite okay, that's it.

Cask language No. 05 Carpathian-Oak vs. No. 01 Base Rum. The 6 additional months in the new-make oak cask from the Carpathian Mountains have darkened the color by 6 levels. Nose: also starts off alcoholic, over time sweet-sour aromas of lime, green apple and kumquat come, and more intense than the base. Also seems softer, more caramelized with more vanilla. Clearly less pepper, pleasant mix of spice and sweetness. 7.2 Palate: bitter-salty and woody-spicy. Close to the base, not so sharp-peppery, but also nutmeg alongside lime peel and green apple. A hint of anise comes in. Seems a bit rounder and fuller, but the cask doesn't add that much to the rum. 6.8

Bold cask language, the same base rum aged 16 times in barrels made from different woods. Very interesting project (thanks to Flo for sharing). Overall similar to No. 4 German Oak. The fruit is still there, some sweetness and caramel added. Alcohol remains quite sharp.

Absolutely great project. I only learned about it through the Rum X campaign. It's a lot of fun to explore. The YouTube videos are also super informative. Good choice of base product, good alcohol integration. American: classic 6.3 German: spicy-woody 6.6 French: velvety-oily 7.3 Kiri: surprise 7.4 Mizunara: good complexity 7 Walnut: little influence 6 Chestnut: not so defining 6 Mulberry: iodine/smoky 6.2 Cherry: dense 6.8 Pear: normal 6 Ash: orange 6.1 Tokaji: sawdust Caucasian: woody, fruity, fresh 6.4 Carpathian: European Bourbon 7.4 Acacia: multi-layered 7 A slightly longer maturation would have been even better to bring out the nuances more. But that has to be managed first. Overall, there are already remarkable differences in how it has developed. Hats off for the endeavor, very fun and interesting.

Wagemut Cask Language Project (Cask Strength) It is to be expected that for such a project the best possible rum is not used. The base rum is comparatively spirituous without special characteristics. 1st Flight: Base Rum / all Oaks Interesting how much the differences are between individual oak types. Mizunara especially surprised me. 2nd Flight: Base Rum / Special Woods Incredibly varied, from bad to good, everything was there. Many thanks for this interesting project.

Das Carpathian-Oak-Finish verleiht dem Rum eine charaktervolle Tiefe - würzig, erdig, holzig, ohne süß zu sein. Die Eiche ist dezent aber spürbar präsent. Eine spannende Variante für alle, die ein einzigartiges, weniger versüßtes Holzprofil lieben.
