Tar, rubber and campfire smoke roll out of the glass — this is a TDL Trinidad rum finished in a Caroni cask, and the cask runs the show. Underneath sit menthol and eucalyptus freshness, burnt caramel and a little dried fruit, with an oily sweetness on the palate. At 61.6% it's warm but the alcohol sits well; a few drops of water round it off. Blind, most tasters would swear it's a straight Caroni.

The Caroni barrel did a great job! I could almost imagine that there was still a good amount of residual moisture. The fresh T.D.L aromas (mint, menthol, eucalyptus) are still perceptible, as is a burnt caramel sweetness ... but that's it. The rest is a nice strong dirty caronia aroma. I like it a lot... Blindly I would have guessed a pure but weaker Caroni

Very smoky on the nose. Blind, I would have guessed whisky. In the mouth, much more pleasant. The smoke remains but is contained by dirty Caroni notes. For me, the two rum styles I individually like very much don't lead to a coherent overall picture here.

Uiuiui ... The Caroni finish is clearly noticeable... lots of dirty notes in the nose ... Dried fruit, chocolate, tar, rubber, some leather polish and a pleasant sweetness. The rum needs easily a 3/4h time rather more ... On the palate there is first an oily sweetness ... immediately comes a brutal smoky note that I don't like at all (I don't like smoky at all) ... this remains almost alone on the tongue for a long time ... A little later there is some fruit and bitterness (rubber, leather), very light mint and some barrel. For me, however, the smokiness predominates, which personally pushes the points down. Without this smoky influence it would certainly have been an 85+. Alcohol perfectly integrated.

First of all, I looked up what I had noted in the other two 2005 TDLs I had tasted so far (Rhum Attitude, Swell PG #4). There were yellow fruits, floral, subtle menthol and buttery cookies. This one is clearly different, much more on dirty notes (bicycle inner tube, tar, engine room). The Caroni cask has clearly left its mark. Also dried fruit and caramel. I would be blind here without any problems with Caroni. Charred barrel on the palate and the torched remains of the old tire dealer, almost like the 94 Velier Guyana Stock. But I think it's good 😁One minus point for the finish, which is too salty for me...

After the first sip, I would actually have guessed Guyana. After some standing time, it did change a bit though. Still quite spicy and woody. But you can also detect leather and tar.

You can smell and taste the intense Caroni influence from start to finish. The strong smoke and peat aromas remind me a bit of an ex-Islay cask, which personally I don't like that much. Still a good rum that will undoubtedly divide opinions.

#6009 30.11.2025 Enjoying a few samples while watching Rambo IV. Nose Medium intense, wood, light roasted, faint smoke, light caramel, mint, light tar, faint rubber, light apple, citrus. Palate Medium intense, warm, wood, faint smoke, mint, light chocolate, light olive, faint salt, light rubber, light caramel, light tar, fruits. Finish Long and warm, wood, faint smoke, light coconut, light varnish, light tar, light peach, mint. Empty glass Mint, light tar, light rubber, chocolate, light caramel, light olive.

The Caroni cask is nicely present here, you could say. I basically like it very much, but there is this weird smoky whisky-like note that I personally don’t like, which spoiled a better rating.

Nice nose, Caroni is clearly recognizable, could also be Lagavulin.🏴🏴🏴 On the palate then very strong, furry and lots of herbs. The finish continues similarly... smoky, Lagavulin comes back into play. With a bit of water it becomes softer and rounder. Well done finish! Thanks to Bonn!

The Caroni cask finish overlays much of the T.D.L. A couple of fruity-berry notes, slightly caramel sweetness and a bit of menthol. Otherwise, the Caroni dominates. Unfortunately with a pronounced smoky note. Especially the finish is persistently smoky and sweet. Unfortunately not my thing.

2nd tasting: I'm less convinced by the nose. On the palate, the finish is smoky, peaty, and very long. Very pleasant. A very good rum. I find the nose incredible and full of promise, but not all delivered. Very interesting nose, caramel at the opening then candied fruit, prune with a hint of freshness (citrus?). When it opens a bit on leather. Very interesting. Bold attack, I don't find the fruit - more fatty, a bit of 'barnyard' with leather and blond tobacco and smokiness. Very interesting length, a bit of leather comes out.

The Caroni finish irons out quite a lot. The typical TDL notes are only partly perceptible. Which makes it very exciting. Here the dirty and especially smoky notes from the Caroni finish dominate. The TDL wafts in the background. Blind, I would have guessed a cozy Caroni here.

First nose on hay and milk! Very farm-like smell and reminds me of cows passing through the milking machine. The vegetal dominates by a small margin. Very strong mouth with sugar on the tip of the tongue then alcohol with lots of ester!

Surprisingly Whisky-esque peat on the nose. Not a huge fan. Getting Whisky-vibes on the palate as well, more so than the typical Caroni workshop. Nevertheless, the Caroni DNA is absolutely present, and the rum tastes sweeter than what the nose would suggest. Creamy and sweet finish supported by some Caroni dirt, but also a lingering peaty aftertaste. This rum would be great without the peat-influence!

Tasted 2026-08-14 outturn 140 bottles · 5 - Nose — Clearly Caroni-inflected. An industrial quality, some Sharpie. Apple. Oak. An aged-agricole character underneath. - Palate — The nose carries through, with an industrial, rubbery streak alongside and a campfire quality. The governing image: eating a feta-mint salad at a campfire — fresh mint front and center, a little pine nut. Red apple. Peach. Perhaps the tiniest touch of orange. - Finish — Short to medium. Fruit lingers, peach especially. Residual flavors pleasant. Verdict — 9 / 10 (t8ke) · The marriage of TDL distillate with the Caroni cask is the whole point, and it lands — mint and red-apple/peach fruit from the distillate, industrial rubber and campfire from the cask, with no seam between them. Scored above where I'd expect consensus to land. The finish is the weakest element; the profile is carrying the score.
