Wu Dram Clan Cuban Rum 1992
Dried figs, raisins and dark chocolate lead, with coffee, tobacco, old oak and a touch of caramel behind. Despite the very dark color and 31 years, it drinks light and round rather than thick and oily, with the alcohol tucked away neatly. Several tasters call it the best Cuban rum they've had — rich and harmonious, if not the most complex.

Aggregated from 50 community reviews.
Rich, dark-fruit Cuban sipper for cigars Widely seen as one of the finest Cuban bottlings around: dark fruit, cocoa and coffee, beautifully integrated alcohol. The catch — it's harmonious rather than deeply complex, and a few find the finish short or slightly bitter.

The raisin aroma on the nose is also found on the palate, but only in the mid-palate. Before that, I briefly taste something like the baking additive vanillin (thanks, Dirk, for the classification). What I really like is, after the really distinctive, pleasant taste of sweet raisins and dried apricot, the wonderful cocoa and coffee finish, which lingers in the empty glass for a long time. At no time is alcohol noticeable on the nose, great! Very dark color, but no oily-heavy texture as one might expect, rather light. My conclusion: A smoothly rounded, elegant rum from start to finish without any break between nose and palate, which surely pairs excellently with a cigar. Because of the 1992 vintage combined with the country of origin, this rum has an absolute unique selling point. Do you call that a unicorn already? Whether it is really significantly better than the TWJ 1978 (from what I suspect after tasting, the same distillery in Santiago de Cuba) still has to be proven in a direct comparison. But I am already sure that the guys from Wu Dram Clan can be congratulated again on the excellent cask selection. Recommendation! Update 2024-04-10: Today finally a direct tasting against the Cuban 1978 from TWJ (RX17933) and the difference could hardly be bigger. I confirm my earlier separate assessments: They may both come from the same distillery, but where I taste distinct fine cocoa in the '92, in the '78 it’s just annoyingly tasting of damp, burnt wood – like a campfire that was put out yesterday and got rained on overnight. The '78 simply spent too long in the cask. Update 2025-11-16: Slight downgrade from 88 to 86 points after tasting together with RX20297 and RX24348.

01.08.2025 Retasting and I still like this release a lot. ------------------ #5084 Saturday 24.01.2025 - 26.01.2025 A nice weekend in my sisters summerhouse with old friends and colleagues tasting a lot of rums. I can only recommend like we did, no phones allowed and then only music in the background 😊 Colour Very dark in colour. Nose Light, round, sweet, wood, light roasted, light chocolate, raisin, faint cherry, light caramel. Palate Round, oily, wood, light roasted, medium spicy, light dry, light cherry, light caramel, light chocolate, naturally sweet, faint tobacco. Finish Medium long, light spicy, light dry, naturally sweet, fruits, light cherry, light caramel, faint coffee. Empty glass Chocolate, light smoke, caramel, light tobacco, dried fruit, faint cherry.

This is the best Spanish-style rum I have drunk so far. I find the nose completely great, very present raisins paired with soft, dark aromas of chocolate, nuts and some tart tobacco. Even though the style is too delicate, I get slight Guyana associations. In the mouth, the first thing you notice is the perfect alcohol integration, plus a popcorn that complements the dark flavors of the nose. The bitter side that emerged in the nose as tobacco is found again in the mouth and finish as coffee. The attack is surprisingly soft, but not so endlessly long. The rum has a good flow, but it is absolutely worth giving it the concentration so that the delicate complexity does not pass you by. Too bad I don't have a bottle - the photo was taken in the kitchen of MoparRules and the tasting notes were confirmed today in the sample tasting.

Although I got into rum through Cuba, I don't like this style as much anymore. However, this bottling is really good, even if it's not a complexity monster, it's still very rich, dark, and heavy. On the palate, it's also soft and light, so you can take bigger sips. Cuba can still do it!

I‘m pleasantly surprised by this bottling. Nice and intense nose with dried fruits (plum and apricots) as well as cacao and unsurprisingly wood and leathery notes. Well balanced and rich. On the palate again a nice first Impeession. Dried fruits, wood and tobacco. Much sweeter than expected though. Very nice. Only the finish isn’t my cup of tea: I get the sensation of artificial vanilla aroma (vanillin) here which I do not enjoy. While the rum is well balanced, at the very end the wood takes over a little bit too much. One of the best Cuban rums I had so far. Reminds me of the very old Santiagos but with more power and intensity.

Very oily, red-golden, deep color. Lots of dried fruit, spicy, woody. Plenty of caramel, chocolate and a hint of sweetness. A hint of solvent. Very round, very balanced, but not very complex. I really like the nose.😀😀😀 Very spicy and woody in the mouth. The alcohol really stands out. The finish is nice and warming before it's over a little too quickly. There are more exciting things, but this is a perfect rum for relaxed enjoyment. This is probably the top quality rum from Cuba. Very good 😀😀 Music to go with it: "...introducing Ruben Gonzales". In my opinion the best from the Buena Vista era.🇨🇺🇨🇺🇨🇺 And thanks to 🇩🇪

Einer der komplexeren Cubaner!

The WDC comes across beautifully on the nose with caramel, dried fruit, chocolate and baking mix. Very round and drinkable on the palate. I spontaneously like the WDC better than the TWJ Many Faces, which was very bitter on the finish (direct comparison to follow, there should still be some left in the sample...). The WDC is also a really nice companion to the cigar, which complements rather than dominates...

On the nose, lots of sweetness with vanilla, chocolate, and a broad mix of fruit that comes with a heavy sweet hit. Also chocolate, subtle coffee notes, and some spices. Both on the palate and in the finish, it's rather short. Pleasant to drink, but aside from the slightly bitter wood influence that flashes in the finish, it fades pretty quickly. I tried the rum again after some time and this time left it in the glass for much less time – the first time it was a good two hours, the second tasting only 30 minutes. The rum definitely has a limit when it comes to airing; if you stay a bit more conservative here, the rum benefits a lot more. I’m revising my initial rating quite a bit upwards based on these new impressions (from 7.0 - good - to 8.0 - very good).

A small but fine Cubatasting is on the agenda today. Ever since I tried the Valdespino, I've been looking for a similar profile (tobacco, leather, dark fruit, old wood, fireplace, light smoke, full-bodied, oily and fat texture) at cask strength. Let's see if we can find it here. A Venezuelan has also sneaked in =P 1st Plantation Cuba: Dances out of line in terms of color. Fruitier and not at all what I imagine my Cuban to be like. The sweetest and also by far the most boring of the tasting. 75 pts (second tasting: -2 pts) 2nd Rome Deluxe Cuba: A positive surprise at.first tasting and still very tasty. Has the aromas mentioned at the beginning, also some yellow fruits, plus slightly creamy and quite wild on the palate. Not overly complex, but very pleasing. 86 pts (second tasting: +2 pts) 3rd Wudramclan Cuba 1992: Tastes like the consistent evolution of Romdeluxe's Cuban. No longer as wild, somewhat more one-dimensional fruit aromas, much more leather and tobacco, some ash. Very short and fruity-ashy finish. 85 pts. 4th The Whisky Jury Cuba 1978: When this came out I had high hopes: great bottler, almost unbelievable key data, that color... In this comparison, it seems to me that the Cubans not only lose their impetuousness with age, but also their variety of aromas and structure. All the fruit in this rum is burnt, strangely enough this rum is very light on the tongue and not fat and oily as I had hoped. The tobacco, the wood and the fruit literally turn to ash in the mouth. Somehow I like that, but on the other hand it is not at all an upgrade to the Rom Deluxe Cuban, if you compare them directly. 85 pts (third tasting: -4 pts) 5th Cadenheads Dictador 26 yo: My Cuban in a Venezuelan coat! That's how I imagine it! Great aromas, great oily, fat structure. Tobacco, old wood, some ash (for me still and fitting in the aroma spectrum). <3 88 pts. Many thanks to Mto75 for the samples!

Great old Cuban from my vintage. Lots of molasses and dried fruits such as raisins, figs and spices such as allspice, cloves and cinnamon. The alcohol is perfectly integrated, the aroma is sweet, delicately bitter and slightly sour. Very tasty but not my cup of tea overall.

Something fine on Easter Sunday 🐣 Thanks Latscho for sharing this very old Cuban. Nose: I usually only know light, simple and rather alcoholic Cubans. This one is very different. Complex, aromatic and interesting. Spicy and woody with a beautiful and intense cocoa aroma. More precisely, banana rolled in cocoa. Behind that, old oak and vanilla. Sweetness of brown caramel and brown sugar syrup. Also fruity with dried apricot, lemon peel and slightly bitter orange, perhaps also a little blackcurrant. A pleasant Maggi note at the back. A nice nose. 8.7 Palate: unfortunately falls off significantly on the nose. This is where I find the more typical Spanish-style Cuba associations. Metallic, salty and bitter with lots of lemon and orange peel. Green apple, a little caraway and a hint of iodine go well with this. However, cocoa is also present and a little rum raisin rounds things off. Top for Cuba, too metallic and bitter for me. 8.1

Beautiful and intense nose with dried fruit and cocoa. Wood and leather notes. Well balanced and rich. Dried fruit, wood and tobacco on the palate. Delicious sweetness that tastes great to me. Alcohol is barely noticeable, very well integrated. Very good Cuban rum. Not cheap but worth it.

I am positively surprised, it is complex and balanced really good. Coffee (Mokka and Cappuccino), different sugars and caramel plus some spices are the main ingredients. If it weren’t for the slightly alcoholic finish with a bitterness I can’t really put a name on, this could be a close candidate for a 9.

Top rum in the Spanish style, pleasantly drinkable with notes of raisins. Really good for such an old rum, which was produced in a rather light style.

Rosine, Vanille, Schokolade. Im Abgang etwas Kaffee und Holz.

What's going on here? CubaRum that tastes good? Doesn't exist :-) After Eminente, this is the second Cuban representative that would be suitable for drinking neat in the house bar. Chocolate, coffee, wood and caramel create a nice note on the palate. Mild and perfectly integrated alcohol. But the price is just not right. Really great for Cuba, but the price is a flop.
Review by Jacques etdom
Very progressive nose. The first nose is almost agricultural, then opens up to caramel and tobacco, all with great finesse. The palate is almost light or refreshing, compared to the nose. Some Cuban markers on the finish. The whole is very well blended, you can feel the age of the barrel. A good rum, but at too high a price.

I'm glad to be able to taste something nice from Cuba again. I also really like this one. Not quite as creamy and full-bodied as the rx20297 but still delicious. Given the price tags, it's not an entirely fair comparison.
Review by DeMaddin
Very tasty Cuban, the cask gets a lot out of this fellow. The Wu Dram Clan had a fine nose here. Round and sweet on the nose, with the typical chocolate-cocoa-coffee notes with a very atypical menthol-like subliminal freshness. Also round and soft on the palate, but less fruity, here the wood takes over with the embedded tannins. I would classify the finish in the medium segment, otherwise it would be rated even higher. For a rum produced in the Spanish style, a very, very good result, bravo!

Cake on the nose. Malty - reminded me of my childhood chocolate malt milk beverage. Some spices and flour like notes on the palate. Finish has a dry flour like texture - not unpleasant. There’s sweetness on the palate but nothing overpowering. The finish is dry and lingering.

No a nakonec přijde pikantnost, cítím pepř a pálivé papričky. Celkově mi chuť rumu připomíná chilli čokoládu, kde pálivá složka otevírá chuťové buňky k lepšímu prožitku. Závěr poměrně dlouhý, stále tam mám tu pálivou čokoládu, zajímavé že necítím žadnou alkoholovost. Zajímavá Kuba.

Schöne kräftige Nase: Dunkel und schwer. Melasse, getrocknete Früchte, dunkle Schokolade. Wunderbar.
