Wu Dram Clan Cuban Rum 1992
Dried fig, raisin and dark chocolate up front, with a coffee-and-cocoa finish people keep coming back to. This is a 31-year-old Cuban from Wu Dram Clan at cask strength, and most tasters call it the best Spanish-style Cuban they've had — round, sweet and easy to drink despite the age. The honest knock: it's harmonious rather than deeply complex, and the finish fades a touch fast.
- Dried fruit & cocoa
- Hidden alcohol
- Round, easy sipping

The raisin aroma in the nose can also be found on the palate, but only in the middle section. Before that, I briefly taste something like the addition of vanillin from baking (thanks, Dirk, for the classification). After the really concise, pleasant taste of sweet raisins and dried apricot, I really like the wonderful cocoa and coffee finish, which can be felt for a long time in the empty glass. No alcohol perceptible on the nose at any time, great! Very dark color, but not - as one might expect - an oily, heavy texture, but rather light. My conclusion: A drinkable, round, elegant rum from start to finish, with no break between nose and palate, which is certainly a great match for a cigar. Due to the 1992 vintage in combination with the country of origin, this rum has an absolutely unique selling point. Is that what you call a unicorn? Whether it really is significantly better than the TWJ 1978 (from the same distillery in Santiago de Cuba, as I assume after tasting it) remains to be seen in a direct comparison. But I'm already sure that the guys from the Wu Dram Clan are to be congratulated once again on their excellent choice of cask. Recommendation! Update 2024-04-10: Finally direct tasting today against the Cuban 1978 from TWJ (RX17933) and the difference could hardly be greater. I see my earlier separate assessments confirmed: They may both come from the same distillery, but where I taste incisively fine cocoa in the 92, in the 78 it's just penetrating tasting damp, charred wood - like a campfire that was put out yesterday and got rain overnight. The 78 has simply been in the barrel too long.

I am positively surprised, it is complex and balanced really good. Coffee (Mokka and Cappuccino), different sugars and caramel plus some spices are the main ingredients. If it weren’t for the slightly alcoholic finish with a bitterness I can’t really put a name on, this could be a close candidate for a 9.

Sehr guter kubanischer Rum. Nicht billig aber lohnt sich.

Top rum in the Spanish style, pleasantly drinkable with notes of raisins. Really good for such an old rum, which was produced in a rather light style.

The WDC comes across beautifully on the nose with caramel, dried fruit, chocolate and baking mix. Very round and drinkable on the palate. I spontaneously like the WDC better than the TWJ Many Faces, which was very bitter on the finish (direct comparison to follow, there should still be some left in the sample...). The WDC is also a really nice companion to the cigar, which complements rather than dominates...

A small but fine Cubatasting is on the agenda today. Ever since I tried the Valdespino, I've been looking for a similar profile (tobacco, leather, dark fruit, old wood, fireplace, light smoke, full-bodied, oily and fat texture) at cask strength. Let's see if we can find it here. A Venezuelan has also sneaked in =P 1st Plantation Cuba: Dances out of line in terms of color. Fruitier and not at all what I imagine my Cuban to be like. The sweetest and also by far the most boring of the tasting. 75 pts (second tasting: -2 pts) 2nd Rome Deluxe Cuba: A positive surprise at.first tasting and still very tasty. Has the aromas mentioned at the beginning, also some yellow fruits, plus slightly creamy and quite wild on the palate. Not overly complex, but very pleasing. 86 pts (second tasting: +2 pts) 3rd Wudramclan Cuba 1992: Tastes like the consistent evolution of Romdeluxe's Cuban. No longer as wild, somewhat more one-dimensional fruit aromas, much more leather and tobacco, some ash. Very short and fruity-ashy finish. 85 pts. 4th The Whisky Jury Cuba 1978: When this came out I had high hopes: great bottler, almost unbelievable key data, that color... In this comparison, it seems to me that the Cubans not only lose their impetuousness with age, but also their variety of aromas and structure. All the fruit in this rum is burnt, strangely enough this rum is very light on the tongue and not fat and oily as I had hoped. The tobacco, the wood and the fruit literally turn to ash in the mouth. Somehow I like that, but on the other hand it is not at all an upgrade to the Rom Deluxe Cuban, if you compare them directly. 85 pts (third tasting: -4 pts) 5th Cadenheads Dictador 26 yo: My Cuban in a Venezuelan coat! That's how I imagine it! Great aromas, great oily, fat structure. Tobacco, old wood, some ash (for me still and fitting in the aroma spectrum). <3 88 pts. Many thanks to Mto75 for the samples!

What's going on here? CubaRum that tastes good? Doesn't exist :-) After Eminente, this is the second Cuban representative that would be suitable for drinking neat in the house bar. Chocolate, coffee, wood and caramel create a nice note on the palate. Mild and perfectly integrated alcohol. But the price is just not right. Really great for Cuba, but the price is a flop.

Genauer, in ordentlich Kakao gerollte Banane. 8,1

I‘m pleasantly surprised by this bottling. Nice and intense nose with dried fruits (plum and apricots) as well as cacao and unsurprisingly wood and leathery notes. Well balanced and rich. On the palate again a nice first Impeession. Dried fruits, wood and tobacco. Much sweeter than expected though. Very nice. Only the finish isn’t my cup of tea: I get the sensation of artificial vanilla aroma (vanillin) here which I do not enjoy. While the rum is well balanced, at the very end the wood takes over a little bit too much. One of the best Cuban rums I had so far. Reminds me of the very old Santiagos but with more power and intensity.

Cake on the nose. Malty - reminded me of my childhood chocolate malt milk beverage. Some spices and flour like notes on the palate. Finish has a dry flour like texture - not unpleasant. There’s sweetness on the palate but nothing overpowering. The finish is dry and lingering.
