Habitation Velier Mount Gay Last Ward 2007
Menthol and mint are the surprise here, riding over glue, orange peel, roasted wood and salted caramel. This pot-still Bajan drinks nothing like a standard Mount Gay — several tasters guessed Trinidad blind. It needs real air time to open, and the 59% shows up warm and a touch sharp on the palate. Fascinating profile, but not the most polished or balanced.

How does Habitation Velier Mount Gay Last Ward 2007 taste?
Summarized by AI from community reviews.
Unusual minty, gluey pot-still Bajan Loved for its unusual minty, gluey, herbal take on Barbados. The recurring catch: alcohol isn't fully integrated and it can run bitter and dry, so give it plenty of air.

Unusual Mount Gay. Very nice mint - almost reminiscent of a TDL.

A rock-solid rum, but in my opinion it lacks almost any enthusiasm. Spices, herbs, wood, a little caramel sweetness and a present smoky note are recognizable, and there is also a little fruitiness.
Review by Mirko Frosini 🇮🇪
It didn't blow me away, but I found the burn finish interesting. A little unbalanced the alcohol integration.

To round off the Whitsun weekend, a little mount gay last ward comparison. Both are very similar, but the nuances are different. In the back of my mind, both remind me a little of T.D.L's. For me it's a neck and neck race, although I would prefer the RX190 due to the better P/L ratio.

Leather, vegetal, bitter herbs, almonds and lemon on the nose, with sandalwood on the palate too, with tropical fruit and leather. The finish is moderately long on sandalwood and fruit. A fine rum with aromatic woodiness, freshness and fruit.
Review by TheRhumhoe
A rather unique rum. The nose is quite dense, almost dusty, with quite a lot of glue, solvents and medicinal notes, to which are added dark notes of leather, chocolate, almond and walnut. The woody spiciness is quite intense and suggests something of a roughneck. The impression on the nose is confirmed on the palate. The palate is powerful, dark, bitter, spicy, alcoholic, herbaceous, roasted and woody. There's a touch of orange and, above all, menthol, which bursts in from nowhere and lends a pleasant freshness. The alcohol could be better integrated. Empyreumatic notes and bitterness unfortunately outweigh the rest of the profile. The finish is dry, bitter and long, with smoky, salty, spicy, vegetal and even earthy notes. An original and interesting profile, but a little too unbalanced between the alcohol and the over-dominant smoky, spicy notes.

This is really a great gay mount!

Very good! Characterized by many tropical (sour) fruits and citrus fruits, herbs, spices, chocolate and honey. Exciting profile and tasty base, made more complex by the bourbon cask, but still lacking the desirable refinement and roundness.

Then the next Habitation Velier, now a Mount Gay. On the nose we have a lot of vanilla and caramel, but also glue and solvent. On the palate we also have a lot of vanilla, surrounded by herbs and above all mint.
Review by w00tAN
Not recognizable as Mount Gay. Still somewhat monotonous on the nose, a tobacco and herbal extract explodes in the mouth. Exciting that this can also be Barbados, would have blindly bet on a Trinidad rum. PLV is good in my opinion but not very good

8,3:On the nose, typical Bajan notes with baking spices, roasted wood, yellow fruits, orange peel, glue. On aeration, caramel is stronger, nuts with an almond, leather, vanilla and some banana. 8,6:On the palate, the attack is very fruity with yellow fruits, citrus, tropical fruits like banana, coconut, dried fruits like apricots, woody with roasted notes like leather, caramel, dark chocolate and spicy with baking spices, a bit salty, medicinal with solvents, hints of petrol and menthol.A molasses is herbaceous... 8,5:The finish is dry, smoky, fruity, the wood is still roasted, perhaps burnt with confectionery, toffee, caramel, nuts, still salty and spicy. The molasses is herbaceous, also a bit vegetal. There are some menthol undertones..

A very spicy rum with a touch of sweet to it. It has a lack of depth, unfortunately, a bit of funky would have done well for this version. I recommend adding a bit of water which will make it more "Bajan" style taste.

Beautiful rum from Barbados but unusual. Well concentrated. Beautiful citrus on the darker wood base. It's really a catchy nose but one could think of TDL. It makes the appreciation of this rum funny when you see today how much bottles that come close to this one in taste sell for... It was 100€, seems like a very distant era...

An interesting Mount Gay rum. The noise is fairly restrained, some tropical fruit, muscavado sugar and leather bound books. On the mouth it is subtler than I was expecting and drinks well below ABV. Moderately integrated, with long leather elements and some charred wood. It has layers which go more towards sugar and fruit but overall remains on the dryer end. The finish is medium and again fairly well behaved. Solid MG but not setting the world on fire in the same way as some other Velier releases, a little bit timid and flat to really show the best of the spirit
Review by TheJackDrop
First nose, nothing at all. A bit of glue, nothing more, but with aeration you still get a bit of vanilla, citrus and minerals. On the palate it's more herbal, a bit alcoholic, slightly spicy, luckily a sweet mint envelops everything and brings freshness. It's a nice rum (I love mint) but really unbalanced.

Tasting at Oops Århus with Mr. S Hansen & D Jungberg. Nose: Light fruit, slight smoke, almond. Palate: Almond, leather, light fruit. Glass: Light cask, slight smoke. Tasting Romhatten's St. Lucia & The Great Rum Day Oops Århus.

Tasting at Oops "The big rum day" Nose on an adventure👃: I sense a bit of sweetness, a bit of leather, Tongue on an adventure 🥃: I taste a super rum, with a bit of orange, a bit of vanilla/caramel, well-integrated alcohol, and a hint of leather notes The tail of the story💫: nice medium-long finish with notes of some burnt character. 👌
Review by Mirco
On the nose, sweetish fruit, honey and vanilla, accompanied by spicy wood and a hint of mint. On the palate, the rum is strong, slightly bitter and somewhat dry, the fruit is restrained. The wood brings structure but tends to bitterness in places. The finish is medium-length with notes of spice, oak and fresh mint. Overall solid, but without the last spark of refinement.

Tasted again after quite some time and I confirm that it is a great dram! I find it very pleasant.

According to Dr. Frank Ward the Velier bottlings of Mount Gay have been overaged and have subsequently lost part of their classic aromas. As pure pot still MG is supposedly best at 4-5 years of age, let’s see how this fares. Mild and mineralic on the nose with fresh rain and river rocks. A little flat to my liking, admittedly. However continuously agitating the liquid does work some magic in releasing an unexpectedly vibrant profile. It’s heavily camphorous, leathery and dusted with winter spices. First balsamic vinegar. Then a hint of oregano that perpetuates all the way to the finish. Followed by hard glue stick, pineapple husks and cedar wood chips. A very stale profile broken by light caramelisation, dried apricots and fresh orange peel. On the palate the liquid leans further into the dried fruits, accompanied by more pineapple husks and orange zest. It’s sweet, woody, malty and everything you would expect at this point. Camphor still prominently in the driver’s seat with musty, earthy and cooling notes. There’s pinetrees, potting soil, oregano and lots and lots of mint. The taste of herbs and mint lingers, leaving me urging for another pour; and scratching my head pondering why tasters laud ‘01-‘03 TDLs, but raise their eyebrows at this. I’m sorry, Dr. Ward. I really like this.

An incredible punch of aroma for Barbados and very untypical fresh, minty and with plenty of glue and burnt wood and salted caramel. Also some baked banana, sour lemon and menthol. It really needs a lot of time to breathe... but personally still overall too sharp and alcoholic for me. But definitely a super exciting profile for a Mount Gay!
Review by Daniel
Conclusion: unlike the 2009, it still has slight solvent and meaty notes that make it more complex and better for me.
Review by Alexander Rasch
Mmm... I really like the nose. On the palate then quite sharp-edged and slightly alcoholic. After a short acclimation phase, I like the profile more again. Many different styles come through here. Like a Barbados, Jamaica & Trinidad blend.
Review by John Coffey
A minty side quite atypical... I would never have thought of a gay mount...
Review by Johnny Rumcask
The rum needs a lot of time to breathe so that it opens up in taste. With long standing time, the alcoholic note also dissipates. Light spice, some woodiness, brown notes, slight pleasant bitterness. Pleasant, but not insanely complex in taste.
Review by Agricoler
Day 8 of the Sample De Luxe calendar. Good Mount Gay, I see many vegetal notes on the palate. Lots of vanilla and caramel on the nose. The finish is very vegetal again, almost reminiscent of Agricole.
Review by Worst
A version where the alcoholic part stands out a lot. Nice menthol sensations both on the nose and in the mouth. Maybe a bit too one-dimensional.
Review by bossi
Oh, a full nose as you expect from a Pot Still rum and the 59% are barely noticeable on the nose. At first I pick up vanilla and rock candy. Deeper in the glass I find glue, basil and a bowl full of red berries. A very nice nose with lots of body! On the palate the alcohol is noticeable right at the start, as it is much more powerful than you would expect from the nose. It is also less sweet than everything else I know from Mount Gay. But spicier, heavier and more mouth-filling than comparison candidates from Mount Gay. The finish is dry and spicy with some wood. If I had the choice, I would have let the rum mature a few more years. Nevertheless a good rum with a magnificent nose. 83 points Blind tasting: the nose says: clearly a Pot Still rum, nice deep and full. Glue, blackberries and a sweetness of vanilla and caramel. On the palate the alcohol hits completely unexpectedly, about 60%, very mouth-filling and spicy, but without the sweetness from the nose. The finish is medium-long and very dry. Unfortunately, I don't quite like the alcoholic sharpness. Comparing existing notes with these here, the probability is high that this is the Habitation Velier Last Ward 2007. 83 points

Minty & peppery, rather unusual MG. Alcohol not well integrated. Not my favorite.
Review by Bowel Emptier
This one was really interesting. It had an almost medicinal flavor at points but had the fruity smoky woody roundness to balance it. Another great sipping rum but obviously might not be the best for the price.
Review by Big Greasy Daddy
This is an excellent flavor bomb. Fruity, full bodied with some gluey funk. One of my favorites!

Vintage 2007. With 8.3 out of 10, it's a very good bottle, though not the top of my ranking.
Review by BnBrt
Fresh nose, fruit salad, pineapple? Clean attack, fruitiness, a little acidity. Slight lime. Alcohol present, nice warmth on the fruity finish.
Review by Mathieu C.
Well-balanced and fine nose contrasts with a very powerful (too strong) attack in the mouth. Nice lengthBalance woody / pastry / almond (bitter) / caramel / fruity coconutBut too powerful in the mouth and too much bitterness at the end
Review by Natascha og Aske
A fruity nose dominated by galla melon. The palate though is heavy, bitter, burnt leather with a long charter finish. Not the best integrated rum.
Review by Joël
Sweet and alcoholic at the same time, not really my thing.
Review by Florian Perolini
Burning, unbalanced, harsh, vegetal, overripe citrus... I don't like Mount Gay.
