Savanna Collection Grand Arôme The Chronicles (LMDW) 2004
Give it an hour to breathe and this Réunion Grand Arôme opens right up: sour cherry, bourbon vanilla, dark chocolate and a cool menthol streak sitting over varnish and overripe tropical fruit. Members call it one of the best Savannas they've had — hugely complex, oily, and packed with esters. At 64.2% the heat is real, but tasters say it integrates well once rested.

Intense, funky Réunion ester bomb Loved almost across the board — a complex, fruity, funky Savanna with cherry, chocolate and menthol. The one real catch: at 64.2% it needs long air time to settle.

Insane. A completely different profile, basically like Joghurette with dark chocolate, green sour granny smith apple, and butter-cream caramel. Totally wild, plus a bit of black tea! 🤤 Also menthol both on the nose and taste, Werther's original caramel candies, green sour apple, cocoa, lots of berries, sandalwood, and fermented fruit. Overall very round and harmonious! Truly an absolute masterpiece! For me, an absolute benchmark for Savanna. It brings enough complexity and its own DNA to stand out from other GAs and is still super easy to drink. I'd love to have a bottle of this!

Very good Grand Arôme with chocolatey and also menthol notes. Overripe fruits and nail polish - with great cask maturation. 💅 Absolute Savanna recommendation!

Magnificent Grand Arome. Very balanced, lots of funky esters, spicy and incredibly complex. Fruity and slightly sweet... Oily mouthfeel. Alcohol top integrated. One of the best Savanna bottlings I've ever had.

Day 9 in the RumX Ester Calendar, blind. It was probably quickly clear that despite esters there is no Jamaica in the glass. Quite quickly my guess went to Réunion to Savanna, as especially in the finish the typical profile of the distillery shows. Incredibly complex nose that flows out of the glass and offers almost everything: fruit, chocolatey notes, vegetal, menthol, that’s fun! On the palate then somewhat darker, rustier, even bitter, but in a pleasant measure. Still a colorful load of esters, so no reason for the calendar to exist is missing. Great bottling and perfect for this action!

Counts among the absolute Grand Arôme elite. Extreme complexity with impressive balance. Fruitiness of red fruits, fresh mint, wood, subtle sweetness of vanilla and chocolate, spiciness of olives and a bit of artichoke – a wild mix of aromas that harmonizes almost perfectly on the palate and is absolutely impressive.

I just love grand arome because they're usually a flavour bomb. This one is no exception. Intense and lightly funky with fruits, spices and wood in a nice balance. I like the nutty flavour as well as the chocolate that is released once rested for a while. In the finish there is nice roasted/smoky wood 😊

Cheers to Mirco for curating this tasting set! Looking at the bottlings side by side really has the potential to shift some ratings :) Among the GAs, the RumX bottling came out on top for me, with the Chronicals surpassing Thunderstruck (which surprised me tbh). Overall the profile and with that the individual bottlings has/have so much to offer and explore that I would gladly enjoy a bottle of each contender.

If there is such a thing as a balanced Grand Arome, then this comes very close to the ideal. The red fruits that are so distinctive to me (here lots of sour cherries) and bourbon vanilla come through well, along with a slight menthol freshness and caramel. On the palate, the alcohol is present but not unpleasant. There are also many roasted aromas and cognac (grape). The finish might even be the best part: vanilla, smoked barrel, mint, tobacco, and again the red fruits.

Thanks to a member of a Facebook group, I was able to get some GA unicorns and Herr in split. 👃 As soon as the sample is opened, a magnificent varnish envelops the piece, accompanied by oriental spices (pink pepper, Himalayan pink salt). It smells of tropical flowers; almond tree, vanilla orchids and Tiaré Tahiti. I have caramel on toffee, caramelized cashew nuts. Overripe fruits (jackfruit, mango, passion fruit) even slightly rotten appear as the tasting progresses. It ends with the smell of a jar of green olives and tapenades. 😋 First mouth on wood smoke, charred stave, very lively and quick as lightning. Then, lots of fruit on raspberry coulis, red fruit pastes, black berries, candied fruits. The fruity aspect evolves on Loukoums, rose candies, but also towards candied grapefruit zest, blood orange. This acidic side reminds me of a mix between harlequin candies and sour heads. It's indulgent on dark chocolate/chili/raspberry/pecan tiles wandering here and there. I also find a bit of green mint essential oil. The alcohol is very well integrated both on the nose and in the mouth. I do not feel the 64°. ⛳ Long finish, warm, still the esters of overripe fruits, kitchen spices, a bitter dark chocolate. The empty glass gives off scents of black olives, tapenades, smoked bacon and various cured meats. Magnificent Grand Arôme, complex, evolving, intense from start to finish, without lacking a certain finesse. The best GA from Savanna I have tasted so far. Does it have a serious competitor?

Blind tasting E(a)sterweeks 2022 - Day 9 The nose is already amazing! So many different aromas to discover and it never stops! The alcohol is also not inconspicuous. On the palate a huge explosion of aromas, first a little masked by the alcoholic sharpness but as soon as that fades the typical Grand Arome character emerges, accompanied by a beautiful and intense spice. The aromas stay stuck in the mouth for a very long time. A huge rum with an incredible variety of aromas to discover.

#9 RumXHighE(a)ster weeks: Blind tasting: Savanna 10-15 years of aging approx. 60% mid ester Lovely combination of a mix of berries, fruits, nuts and the barrel Result: That was a good outing. Very delicious rum. The alcohol is integrated very well. The best from savanna i‘ve tried so far.

So versatile and intense because you know why all tear around Grand Arome bottlings. Unfortunately 😅 Fruity, spicy, intense since tasting is just fun. Cheers 🥃

Blind tasting, #Easterweeks Day 9: Feels familiar again. I guess by smell it's Savanna. Palate confirms me. I have the Thunderstruck 2004, 14y in mind. I was pretty close. Great rum.
Review by Thunderbird
A very unusual rum, but in a positive way! Incredibly complex and multi-layered. From the nose to the finish you constantly discover new aromas! I'm thrilled!

Rum X Easter 25.4.2: Really good thing we have here😋In the nose sharp, glue, nutty, overripe, medicinal, wood, dried. plum. In the mouth warm, cherry, wood, tangerine, toasted, slightly meaty and cola. Finish very fruit-heavy, which also puts me on Savanna: Bitter orange, plum, strawberry and cola again get to me.I would also guess a Savanna. Grand Arôme, 60-62%, 10 year oldThunderstruck would be very horny🤩.

Online tasting organised by Mirco, super interesting tasting! I'm not an expert in Savanna so that was definitely an experience. Third one in the tasting, this one comes complex, balanced, powerful yet smooth. Strawberry, intense and creamy texture.

A dream 😍. Unfortunately none left anymore :(

Very surprising this Savanna. The first nose hits hard, so I let it air for 1 hour... and then a very nice surprise. Beautiful fruity aromas, a hint of spice, a nice woodiness and a bit of menthol. On the palate it's explosive!! A real delight... and a top-notch length ❤️❤️
Review by Arthur Moreau
An excellent nose characteristic of GA, a delicious palate but the alcohol required 2 hours of airing to calm down. Great potential for an opened, aired bottle.

Rums from the Savanna distillery are some of my favorites. I recommend everyone try especially the ester-heavy pieces like Grand Arome or HERR. You haven't felt so much fruit in just a few drops of liquid for a long time.
Review by Thomas Kindmann
A very good grand arôme, it's funky as hell without going too much on the olive side! Fruits, varnish, it goes a bit in all directions 🤩
Review by Buddudharma
Very high-quality rum, unfortunately the Savanna profile doesn't suit my taste 100%.

After opening, you notice big nail polish and chocolate aromas that quickly fill the room. In the mouth, it's very very good, very successful with ripe tropical fruits and strawberry, the alcohol is perfectly integrated, it's pure pleasure.
