Sip this one neat and give it a few minutes — it needs air and rewards a drop of water. The nose is all workshop: varnish, rubber, solvents. Then the palate flips to fruit — overripe banana, citrus, tropical stuff — with peppery wood on a long, dry finish. Several tasters call it the "typical Fiji" profile: earthy, fermented, vegetal, nothing like Jamaica. At 57% the heat sometimes reads sharp.

Was long my Fiji reference - the 2009 is after 2001 so far de best vintage. Still a top rum - the IdR 2001 is only slightly better.The tropical fruits that you sometimes find has this one except for a present banana and a hint of lemon less, but he is strong on the vegetable side and the typical rubber or wetsuit-like is super integrated: dissolved in solvent biowaste. Overall, for me, Fijis are often stronger in the mouth than in the nose. Here, the nose is already expressive without the risk of confusion with Jamaica. The herbal is also quite different from an Agricole, more fermented, rotting than fresh, grassy. The resinous herbs from the finish linger for a long time.

Fijis have been popular and sought after among connoisseurs for years. My experience shows, however, that sometimes you can find a pig in a poke on the palate, completely independent of the specs. So every Fiji is exciting for me. Today a cross-tasting. 1. sbs 2009 11yo: boring. a bit of dirty Fiji notes, but equally vanilla and licorice. 77 points. (2nd tasting: -4 points) 2. Famillie Ricci 22yo: Tasty, very balanced, alcohol well integrated, on the palate somewhat peppery, astringent and sweet at the same time. The finish is short. Tasty 83 points. 3. Swell de Spirits 9yo: Very smooth start, that changes immediately! xD A quickly smoked cigar naturally but immediately turns into smoke and ash. During this change, the rum lies very astringent and mouth-filling on the palate, awesome! A lot happens here (also dirty notes) in a very short time and in the end only ash remains. Smooth and wild and smoky at the same time. The only downside is the poorly integrated alcohol that gives an unpleasantly long finish. At least we have 66% abv here. Maybe my expectations are just too high in this regard. Interesting and I would love to know how it tastes after a few months or years in the bottle. 85-88 points. 4. The whisky jury fiji 2012: Well, I should have tried this before the Swell. My mouth is still full of Swell Fiji xD 10 minutes break. Much more pleasing, reminds me of the elegance of a Neisson at the start and then it hits again like a Fiji. Dirty aromas garnished with vanilla. Tasty, complex but also quite sharp. The finish is pleasantly dry, young grass and vanilla, some spice. Tasty. I feel my palate is still inspired by the intense Swell =D 85 points. Hats off to Swell, he doesn't leave me alone. Makes me very curious. This relationship could become pretty "toxic" if it gives me a chance.

What a lovely rum. Very close to the typical flavours of Fiji actually. Fruity and warm with some nuty wood and very light spices. The finish is long with plastic/rubber in the background. A pretty complex rum in my mind and may may not like it.

First RumX community meeting in Acht. A typical Fiji nose, overripe tropical fruits and very few esters. A little vegetal side and the wood supports. The palate is different with a dirty side, a smoky side, fermented. But the fruits are definitely there with also some citrus. The finish is medium length, hard on the fruits of course, dry herbs and sweetness at the very end.

Franconian tasting gang Not so good After I did a Fiji round again with DomM for a few weeks, I unfortunately have to say that this was the one I "didn't like at all." Solid but there is much better from this country.

On aeration, citrus fruits and pears arise, the molasses is more vegetal, slightly flowery, hints of peanuts come out. 8,5:On the palate, the attack is sweet &salty with tons of confectionery, banana, citrus fruits and vanilla, there are solvents, grassy, mineral and herbaceous molasses, fresh with tea, peppery wood. 8,4:The finish is long, dry, peppery, the wood is roasted with confectionery, the molasses is herbaceous, the fruits citrus, there are notes of rubber..

Overripe banana from nose to finish. Besides that, some vegetal and solvent notes, which are however weaker than the banana. On the palate, then spices and tea, as well as citrus fruits. I really like it. Alcohol very well integrated.

On the nose, the alcohol is quite present. But then buttery soft on the palate. The great taste evaporates, however, quite quickly in the finish. The bottom line is still a very good rum!

Not great. Good rum, especially in the nose but in mouth alcohol super present, it stings the tongue... It lacks perfumes, fruits. In short it's good but not more for me.

A beautiful complex story. Maybe not quite round but interesting.While the nose is more reminiscent of DIY and hardware store there's a lot of fruit on the palate and also nice floral accents.In the finish then pepper, rather roasty to dry and then also a bit pungent and from the fruit remains at the end not much. But just because of the complexity ne nice bottling.

Plastic, olive and ripe banana. Horny! Alcohol very well integrated, balanced, exciting.Crisp in the mouth, again a load of banana topped with plastic.Certainly not an easy sipper, a very interesting thing all the same.

It's getting better. This rum also tastes very alcoholic, but still completely okay. I taste citrus fruits and solvents here, but that's exactly what makes this rum. Not the best from SBS, but still good.

A rum that apparently divides opinions. I find it somehow good and very interesting with the distinctive notes of rubber, plastic, etc. Admittedly, the alcohol could be better integrated, but for my taste, it is not very disturbing yet.

Not a good integration of the alcohol. In the nose pear and chamomile tea, citrus on the palate and finish which are strongly masked by the alcohol.

The nose leaves a lot to be desired, ethanol and olive with too much flatness and not enough going on. The mouth is much more fun, olive and brine alongside some guava and banana. It’s an interesting one, salty and tropical at the same time but doesn’t keep me coming back for more. The finish is lightly spicy with more brine and some tropical fruit. I have not had many Fiji rums and this is good but not more than that

On the nose, you can clearly recognize the profile of this distillery: green tea – waxy and very vegetal this time. It's rather complex and intense with peppery, fruity notes and a hint of varnish! On the palate, it's warm, intense... wow... but round and flavorful! It's earthy, woody, and on exotic fruits. The finish is long and dry with pepper. It lingers in the mouth for a long and pleasant time, it's impressive! Everything is there in this rum, a beautiful nose, a nice attack on the palate, and a long, very long spicy finish. But Fiji, it's not my thing.

I tried this shortly after the Holmes Cay Single Origin and I can’t believe how similar the colors are, despite the age difference, and the lack of wood influence. This is a delicious, peppery rum with lots of fruity notes, but I’m searching for the industrial funk I’ve only gotten from the Fiji Flag series.

What do you get when blending Jamaican rum, young Guyana pot still and Isla whisky, all continental aged? Right! Let’s do 5 Fijians. SBS 2009 57% Rasta Morris 2009 60,5% Old Brothers 2011 59,1% Old Brothers 2009 63,3% The Nectar 2009 60,5% C: White wine. N: Light esters and burnt eucalyptus. Phenolic. Celery and apples in different shades. Sea water too. The least sweet nose of the bunch. M: Most straight forward rum of the session. Not much complexity here. But also, rather civilised for a Fijian. I get pineapples and granny apple peel. Is there smoke as well? I think so. A simple but nice Fijian I would say. F: Short with hints of white pepper and green grapes. Buy: No, I believe there is other better young Fijians.

Nose filled with tropical fruits, banana and varnish. A slight sharpness is noticeable. On the palate, the spicy, woody notes come through again. ABV is not so well integrated. If you give it time, the alcoholic sharpness fades a bit and it becomes a bit rounder, then it's pleasant to drink.

Now to the fifth rum of the Rum-Club Online Tasting from 09.05.2020: Fiji 2009 S.B.S South Pacific Distillery 1423 World Class Spirits The Single Barrel Collection Distilled: 2009 Bottled: 02.2020 Aged 11 Years 57% One of 253 Bottles Pot Still Molasses Rum Color: White wine Smell: Intense, smells of lacquer, fruit and solvent esters. Also plant sap. Taste: Wow, delicious! Strong and primarily fruity with citrus and tropical fruits. Finish: Very long, still fruity. Some wood and pepper now as well. Conclusion: Very good rum, for me the best in the tasting ... so I immediately bought a bottle. 87 points
