Damoiseau 1991
Prune, licorice and dark chocolate lead here, with leather, espresso and roasted oak stacked behind them. This is a heavy, tropical-aged Guadeloupe agricole that drinks nothing like a fresh grassy one — several tasters even mistook it for an old Demerara. The 54.4% is well integrated, but the wood is loud and a medicinal, bitter edge runs through it. One member calls it "réservé aux spécialistes" — for a reason.

Review by TheRhumhoe
A superb Damoiseau that shows the distillery is capable of great things. The nose displays a certain power and great elegance with heavy fruit notes (grape, red fruit like redcurrant and cherry) and warm spices (chili, nutmeg, baked apple, licorice, vanilla, pepper). Then come oak, leather, dark chocolate, tobacco, and espresso-style coffee. A dark and refined olfactory profile rarely seen in the French Antilles. The attack on the palate is intense, thick, and deep. The fruitiness is heavy, with prune, grape, and blackberry. Dark notes of leather, dark chocolate, coffee, and tobacco blend with spices (vanilla, licorice, chili) for a rounded and coherent whole. You also sense the taste of sugarcane and molasses. The alcohol is superbly well integrated. The finish is very long, dry, and elegant. You find that heavy and dry fruitiness again, the dark side with molasses and sugarcane, aromatic herbs, roasted oak, cocoa, and spices (cinnamon, licorice). The impression left in the mouth is very pleasant. A superb representative of its distillery, which was available at a very fair price when released.

Really heavy nose with dark fruits - especially cherry stands out. Roasty, slightly bitter, yet fruity. Great mouthfeel with a pleasant, natural sweetness. I really like it!

I was worried, given the age and color, that this rum would be just a woody juice. The very woody Calvados smell only amplified that impression. Yet, on the palate, this rum reveals itself to be more complex. Licorice, prune, dark chocolate slowly evolve to offer minty and licorice notes. Wood is extremely present. Not for everyone but nice.

This one is not as potent as its predecessor, but still pretty good. The nose is woody with fruits and candied vanilla. Trailing behind i find licorice and some vegetal and earthy notes. The palate is full bodied with wood and fruit followed by molasses, vanilla and licorice. I also find some vegetal and medicinal notes. The finish is medium to long with wood and dried fruit trailed by vanilla and licorice.

A very heavy Agricole, reminiscent of a tropically ripened Demerara. Cassis and red fruits.

Full round nose. Woody and spicy with dark dried fruits. Prune and dried orange peel. Leather and vanilla and chocolate are beautifully woven in. Something fresh and tart like currant comes in. Deliciously spicy and woody again on the palate. Licorice at first, then some date and prune. Salty and slightly bitter it seems. Something sweet towards caramel is caught up by something spicy, peppery. It remains slightly bitter in the finish. At the back then comes licorice, the grassy sugar cane and even some mint. The age and ABV suit him well.

Great molasses rum that combines a dark profile with notes of spices and herbs. At the same time intense and complex/subtle, you can discover many facets here. My favorite among the 1990s Damoiseaus…

Longueur exceptionnelle

Powerful old rum nose, like Negrita (sorry!) but so aromatic! On the palate, however, it's very atypical, medicated, almost bitter, but with a very old rum finish of leather, vanilla and wood! For specialists only!
