Blind, plenty of tasters guessed cognac or an old agricole before Réunion — the ex-cognac cask is that loud here. Expect grape, rancio, gingerbread spice, dried fruit and roasted nuts over a light grassy edge. One taster nailed the "old guys in Chesterfield sipping Cognac" vibe. Parallel tasting RX19571 and RX20906 Neither is much different and neither is outstanding. In my opinion, they don't come close to the classic from Velier (RX10631). If I had to choose, Le Gus't would have the edge because the alcohol is better integrated than in the Swell and it also tastes a little more like wood and cognac, which I'm always up for. Update 2025-05-27: Absolutely underrated - so far from me too. 🙄 But had it in the glass again today and then forgot about it, which was really good for the rum. The marmalade note is simply overwhelming and unique after a longer period of standing. I think it's very tasty, a whopping 5 points.

A great rum in my eyes. I love the Velier Isautiers and this one goes in exactly the same direction. Hardly any grassy agricole notes, more a hybrid of molasses and sugar cane juice. The cognac cask comes out positively and provides the sweetness. For me, this is one of the top bottlings from Swell.

Another superb Isautier! This distillery is really doing an amazing job and having had the chance to taste some samples from their warehouses, it's only going to keep getting better. A superbly woody nose with a pastry side brought by vanilla and caramel. Some spices too. It's complex and evolves beautifully. A very nice evolution on the palate, first very dry and sharp before fruity and pastry notes develop. Still some spices. Finally some leather notes. A finely carved woodiness. Alcohol very well integrated (though I would have preferred a few degrees less). A beautiful length with tobacco, leather, and stewed fruits at the finish. The cask brings a nice bitterness that lingers for a long time. Very nice rum.

Isautier once again demonstrates its emergence among the great names with this particularly well-selected cuvée. The nose is greedy, pastry-like and caramelized (toffee), accompanied by dried fruits (dates) and exotic fruits (coconut), lots of spice and a woodiness that blends with the influence of cognac. Well-crafted, elegant and very pleasant. The attack on the palate confirms the impressions of the nose. The cognac cask has had its effect, bringing many spices that jostle on the palate and add a dry edge. The sweetness comes on pastry notes, honey and fruit, notably walnut and coconut. The whole is very homogeneous and well controlled, with character and finesse. The alcohol is very well integrated. The finish is long, intensely dry, with a long, tannic, bitter woodiness and spicy oak. Dried apricots and aromatic herbs are also discernible. Isautier has pulled off a fine operation with a cuvée that gives value for money, while at the same time moving upmarket and gaining public recognition.

As is so often the case with Isautier, opinions are divided on this bottling. This time, as so often, I'm on the pro-Isautier side. Another great rum, great balance between fruits of all kinds, fresh wood and grass. Very dry on the palate, accompanied by dark chocolate and dried fruit. Very tasty, I'd love more.

A beautifully sweet agricole with lots of sugar on the tongue. I taste some red wine as well as fruit. Not bad ... really. I'm more of a molasses team, but I quite like it. You can take it with you without hesitation.

A very successful bottling from Isautier that knows how to please! A beautiful, pleasant sweet and sour fruit aroma accompanies you from the nose to the finish. Spicy and slightly bitter aromas are added on the palate. The alcohol is not perfect, but just about well integrated. A harmonious whole.

Lots of bourbon barrel and roasted nuts on the nose, plus gingerbread spice, dried fruit and dark chocolate. The taste is much drier than expected, bitter, woody and roasted. Also somewhat reminiscent of camomile tea, plus gingerbread confectionery, dark roasted nuts and tannins. Overall, the alcohol could be a little better integrated and for me personally there are too many bitter roasted aromas and tannins in the finish... Blindly, I would suspect an overproof bourbon with a high rye content rather than a rum from Reunion!

Notes taken at Rhum Fest 2024, Quick notes and a bit heavy palate, sorry :) We have here: beautiful fruit, gingerbread, a little varnished wood A rum: in cognac casks, well marked Finish: long and super-satisfying. Clearly a bottle I could buy VS a Savanna 8+, for example. Edit: tasted again at home, still a lot of pleasure! Not yet at the level of La Cour, but still.

Trade fair rating 13. GRF. Edit: Now tried twice more calmly, but the rating does not change. Both on the nose and on the palate quite grassy and fresh. Clearly recognizable that this is a rum based on sugarcane juice. I prefer a bit more cask influence.

Rum tasted blind. On the nose I thought of old agricole rum with a particular aging. On the palate I lost that idea because I found it fruitier, a honey side, still a particular woodiness, a bit of freshness. I liked it and was not surprised to discover it was an Isautier. It's a brand that deserves to be better known and offers very beautiful bottles.

The first sip says: put me on the shelf and make sure you try me again in winter. Gingerbread, pepper, a pronounced spiciness and rather dry apricot and redcurrant, making me wish for the first frost. The taste is very broad, perhaps lacking a little depth, but simply a great rum, which already tastes very good in summer, how should it be in winter?

Nice dark notes, some coffee, spices and wood. With longer standing time, the alcohol is well integrated. The whole thing feels round and harmonious and thus a bit boring. The rum is good to drink but leaves no lasting impression.

A very fine agricole from Reunion that has absolutely nothing to envy of the rums from the French West Indies, so gourmand and well-made is it. Another superb product from Isautier, which confirms its move up the range with brut de fûts, and as always, a barrel carefully selected by Swell de Spirits. A superb release.

Hmmm... I think the nose is great, fruity, only slightly grassy, nicely spicy. On the palate, there's a strong sweetness at first, which then changes to a more spicy direction before the wood takes over at the end. And at the very end, slightly grassy agricole notes return. Today, the wood influence is a little too strong for me, changing to bitter in the finish. This is currently dragging the overall score down. However, as this sometimes depends on my form on the day, it needs a second chance soon. Addendum Franconian Tasting Gang - 23.11.2024: Freshly opened bottle, last rum of a longer evening, and I liked it much better today. What I found unpleasantly bitter at the first tasting now came across as a clear but not disturbing barrel influence. The cognac cask brings out pleasant notes of grape and wine. I have to raise the overall rating slightly.

#7219 26.08.2026 Got a handful of Swell samples today so why not give them a run for their money. Thanks for the samples Peter! Watching the TV Series "Swamp Murders". This is a very nice rum and it comes with a really good price tag as well. Intense profile with overripe fruit, ester, grass, glue, plastic, chocolate, roasted wood and some tannins.

Powerful, good alcohol integration. Gingerbread, banana, dried fruits, wet old leaves. Strongly roasted. Really great nose. Reminds me of some recently tasted old Agricoles, only better. On the palate then very sharp and very peppery. Reminds me of Pain-is-Good chili sauce. Phew, now I'm awake. Warm finish, which I like. Overall a great, interesting rum. Strong, complex, not an easy sipper. And you can taste banana bread too...

Already fruity caramel on the nose. Fruity taste. The cognac note comes out very nicely. But also vanilla with roasted aromas. The finish is very long in my opinion. The rum goes very much in the mezcal direction. Strong piece.

Tasting a 3cl sample. 👃 Lime, sugarcane, root, cinnamon stick, vanilla pod, licorice stick, jujube, cooked strawberry, quite sweet and sour fruity. The Cognac woodiness makes its effect. 😋 Tea, mint, herbal freshness, dried fruits, honey, vanilla pod, cinnamon, light coconut, spices, Cognac woodiness more present on the palate than on the nose. ⛳ Dry, tannic, slightly bitter on tobacco leaf, leather and sweet and sour stewed fruits. A good quite atypical selection from Isautier. The alcohol could be better integrated, I still prefer it to the Le Gus't selection on this point.

The aging in the Cognac cask is present from nose to finish. Vanilla, nut, and wood notes accompany this taste, paired with light notes of dried fruits. The alcohol is personally almost too dominant for me.

In direct comparison to the Velier Isautier Agricole, the Abfplkung loses out, but still a great bottling from Swell . Subtle grassy notes. Lots of spicy notes, fruitier (apricot) and sweeter than the Velier bottling. The alcohol could be a little better integrated.

After I had the Isautier from Velier in my glass yesterday, today the Isautier from Swell due to the bottle sharing. A great agricole that definitely shows the ageing in an old cognac barrel. I like that. Much spicier than the Velier, which was more floral on the nose. I also like the slightly roasted note. Much spicier on the palate than the Velier, with lots of cardamom. The alcohol is a little better integrated than in the Velier, but also almost 6% less, maybe that's why. I'm slowly getting a taste for Agricole.

It has that „old guys in Chesterfield sipping Cognac“ Aura. Lots of dried fruits (raisins of course, dates and plums), wood and rancio . Some spices (vanilla and allspice) and Lebkuchengewürz. It’s good but I would prefer a Cognac anytime.

From the Swell calendar... on the nose you notice the Cognac cask, which gives the whole thing a nice fruitiness. Then come nutmeg, vanilla, cask, and somehow also a hint of Calvados. On the palate spicy, peppery, somewhat sharp-edged in the finish.

Dangerously well-integrated alcohol. Tart dried fruit, licorice, nice varnish. You can smell the cognac, perhaps a little too much. But I find it very gourmand. At over €100 a bottle, it's still good value for money.

My first Isautier. I'm very impressed, grassy notes with cognac, cask influences and red fruits. On the tongue a slight sweetness, but a slight bitterness predominates which in my opinion fits super well with the cask aromas and spice notes that you know from Christmas - allspice, clove, possibly cinnamon, without tasting like sweet gingerbread. Very multi-layered and complex, you can have fun with it in the glass for a long time! Going on the wish list.

Already fruity on the nose. A small fruity-sour explosion of flavor on the palate, wine gum with slightly bitter, woody notes that linger on the finish, increasingly dry and astringent. Even better and more open with a few drops of water, although this does not really change the profile For me, a really successful bottling.

Very pleasant aroma, where cinnamon, wood, vanilla and a mix of herbs with eucalyptus or maybe mint play the main role. On the palate, the initial sweetness transitions into a load of spices flavored with herbs and a bit of technicality. A very successful, mature piece full of flavors.

Update: 6 months ago the alcohol and lack of distinct aromas bothered me. Either I was an idiot or the rum has changed massively, I suspect the former... The notes are now updated here. A nice, slightly red hue. The nose brings a fruity-sweet smell of strawberry jam spiced with cinnamon, maybe vanilla, towards red fruit jelly. A slight floral aroma is also present, the mix reminds me a lot of the smell in Indian shops - but not heavy perfume, rather light, a bit like jasmine tea. On the palate, the strawberry with the floral-Indian aroma continues. Clearly there is alcohol, but very discreet for almost 60%. The nose is also much more intense and complex than I remembered. The finish is pleasant and medium-long, reviving the Indian shop again. A floral, distinctly strawberry rum, diverse and perfect for a mild summer evening. I really like it on the nose. Nice roasted aromas but somehow also slightly fruity. On the palate I unfortunately taste almost only cognac with some wood. Okay, but not outstanding.

This Friday, a look back at a sample from ALRDS: Swell from the Wild Series – Rhum Agricole Isautier RVA 2011 (59.4%). Since this distillery has been little highlighted here, let's briefly recall who Isautier is. Founded in 1845 by brothers Charles and Louis Isautier, newly settled in La Réunion, the house made a mark as early as 1878 at the Paris Universal Exhibition where it won a medal. But it was truly in 1910, under the impetus of Alfred Isautier, that the Isautier Establishments took off: installation of a distillation column and opening to export. In 2011, the distillery was moved to a new site in Saint-Pierre, designed with sustainability in mind (France's first solar air conditioning system). Today, it is known as much for its agricultural and traditional rums as for its arranged rums and punches, emblematic of Réunion's lifestyle. This bottling is an agricole rum distilled in 2011, aged in ex-cognac cask, single cask full tropical. Bottled by Swell at 59.4%, limited to 316 copies. 🔸 Nose: a beautiful complexity, between caramelized roundness, exotic fruits and a note reminiscent of glue, all enhanced with spices and wax. 🔸 Palate: concentrated and intense, true to first impressions. Aromas oscillate between fruity, spicy, waxed wood and an intriguing medicinal touch. It's complex, captivating, almost hypnotic. 🔸 Finish: long and marked, dominated by spices, with a hint of burnt rubber and molasses that lingers. In summary: a rich and deep journey, where sweet and spicy balance perfectly, carried by an intoxicating woodiness. 👉 And don't forget: our first tasting of the season takes place next week! Smell initially mild and fruity, the more air it gets, the sharper and smokier it becomes. Taste sharp/spicy/smoky reminds me of a cognac. For beginners who want it sharper. Will definitely test it again in the future.

An attractive nose, which blind could make you hesitate about the agricole side. A damp woodiness, fruits, a little citrus, vanilla, and the cognac with the grapes is felt. The alcohol seems well integrated on the nose. On the palate, it's intense with spices but immediately softened by fruits, vanilla. We find the damp woodiness, the cognac, the alcohol is well integrated. There is a slight smoky side also at the end of the palate. The finish is long, on damp woodiness, the cognac. Really top!

Matteo from Vino e Convivio Constable Bob Enoteca gave me the sample to try. Thanks for that. The rum has a great mouthfeel, alcohol is very well integrated. You immediately notice the influence of the Cognac cask. On the palate you immediately taste an Agricole, nicely grassy, slightly woody and very drying, saliva-inducing. Finish is medium-long with a fine oak note. A great drop.
