The Whisky Jury New Yarmouth The Many Faces of Rum NYE/HM 2009

Nearly everyone rates this a good, honest New Yarmouth — the debate is only about ranking. Expect ripe pineapple, banana, marzipan and that classic glue/nail-polish funk, with cookie dough and roasted wood underneath. Softer and more restrained than most 2009 siblings, which some love for easy sipping and others find keeps it out of the top tier. At 61.6% it still hits hard.

The community says
  • Pineapple and marzipan
  • Well-integrated alcohol
  • But: Less deep than siblings

How does The Whisky Jury New Yarmouth The Many Faces of Rum NYE/HM 2009 taste?

Aggregated from 68 community reviews.

Fruity, funky New Yarmouth, softer than its siblings Loved as a fruity, funky, well-integrated NY that many happily sip. The recurring catch: several find it a touch lighter and less deep than the best 2009 bottlings.

Perfect for

Jamaican pot-still fans who want fruity high-ester funk

Less suitable for

Beginners — it's cask strength and full of solvent funk

8,8:On the nose, the first impression is estery with overripe tropical fruits like pineapple, mango, some citrus, as a wood is roasted with bread notes, spicy with vanilla, a molasses brings licorice, we notice some glue... On aeration, there is delicious marzipan, yellow fruits and some coconut, a very round combination. 8,8:On the palate, the attack is fruity with overripe tropical fruits like banana, pineapple, yellow fruits that round up glue notes, the wood is roasted with caramel, nuts, cookie dough, spicy. After nice rest, notes are very balanced, delicious, there is a toasted coconut, citrus and molasses with licorice. 8,7:The finish is long, dry, still pleasant with tropical and yellow fruits, roasted, smoky wood notes, now also chocolate, nougat and esters..

#5107 13.02.2025 Running some samples at home while relaxing on the final days of my vacation. Nose Fresh, medium intense, fruity, light wood, light glue, light citrus, ester, faint chocolate. Palate Medium intense, light wood, fruity, light glue, light berries, light citrus, ester, spice, faint caramel. Finish Long and warm, light wood, faint roasted, light citrus, balanced, faint chocolate. Empty glass Chocolate, faint floral, fruits, faint caramel, faint vanilla. Needs to rest for a good while to really open up properly.

Wow, sharp-edged and alcoholic nose. With more time and care, lots of nail polish, esters, trop. Fruits. I had blindly mistaken the rum for a Hampden! Palate: FIREWATER! I have to be really careful here, because the alcohol is very present. With small sips, the facets reveal themselves: funky, fruity-sweet, dry The finish then turns bitter, salty and dry, but the fruity sweetness remains. Overall, the cask is rather inconspicuous here. A very good, strong New Yarmouth. I find many parallels to Hampden. Be careful with the first sip, powerful attack. Definitely not a beginner's rum but more something for freaks 😉

Nose It has everything you would expect from a 2009 New Yarmouth fruitiness banana, pineapple, mango, a little marzipan, a good amount of esters, but somehow lighter and more restrained than some other bottlings of the vintage. On the palate First slightly oily... then very dry in the mouth. Fruitiness and spiciness are lost a little more in the mouth ... Alcohol is not optimally integrated. Relatively bitter and very dry finish. It cuts a solid figure in Mai Tai. The bottom line is that it can't quite keep up with the bottlings of recent times....

So this is the next hype bottling from TWJ, a New Yarmouth 2009. Very nice on the nose, some glue, some fruit, some acidity, very round and pleasing. On the palate there is also a nice triad of fruit, glue and acidity, all very round and pleasing, not too intense and nicely balanced. It lacks some of the creaminess of the CDI and also the depth, but it's still fun, simply a relaxed, delicious sipper. The finish is quite short. Doesn't quite live up to the hype for my taste, but still a very good bottling. I'm glad I was able to secure a bottle here, but I wouldn't necessarily need a second one.

After this was spontaneously opened for a MaiTai with DomM, because a few cl were missing for a "strong MaiTai", it was tasted again pure. Conclusion: it's already very good in a MaiTai. Neat, I classify it as one of the weakest New Yarmouth 2009s, having already had a few in my glass. But that really doesn't mean that it's bad, but let's see how the open bottle develops over time.

The typical NY94 tail is there, but it need to stay few more years in the cask to get calm

New Yarmouth

Avg Rating 8.7/10 96 Rums

New Yarmouth is Jamaican rum's best-kept secret. There are almost no photos of it, it makes Wray & Nephew White, the island's best-selling rum, and it is one of only three distilleries that can reach the highest esters. Collectors only really discovered it through aged 1994 vintages, which have become some of the most surprising rums on RumX.
