Santiago de Cuba Extra Añejo 12 Años

Opinions land all over the place on this one. Most people call it a pleasant, soft Cuban sipper — vanilla, caramel, dried plum and a woody finish — while several find it just an average, sweet daily pour. It's very sweet, which a few tasters clocked as tasting sugared. Where nearly everyone agrees: it shines alongside a cigar or dropped into cocktails.

Overall an OK rum from the SdC distillery, part of the Cuba Ron S.A. is aged for 12 years in old oak barrels and bottled without additives. It’s a little above average, but doesn’t really match their 11 year release. The nose is woody and fruity with lots of aroma of vanilla. At the palate and during the medium long finish it’s well balanced, woody, roasted, fruity, nutty with some spiciness and sweetness and flavors of plum, coffee and vanilla.

A completely normal average rum that goes down the throat well. Can be enjoyed neat or mixed for cocktails. Nothing special but also not a rum I wouldn't advise against.

Not really my cup of tea. Very sweet and fruity with some wood. Very good in mixers though and I also used it for baking as well (Chocolate Rum Raisin Cake).

It feels like a Cuban rum. Very interesting note of spices, but otherwise an average rum to me.

Cuba taught the world to drink rum light. This is the island that gave us the Daiquiri, the Mojito and Bacardi, and the smooth, column-distilled Spanish style that became the most popular rum on earth. Today its rum is entirely state-run and shut out of the United States, yet Havana Club still ranks among the Caribbean's biggest brands.
