This 21-year TDL leads with fresh mint, menthol and eucalyptus, backed by oak, yellow stone fruit (peach, lychee) and a faint "dirty" tar note. #5015 31.12.2024 Enjoying a set of samples while cooking New Year Dinner. Nose Wood, light roasted, light tannins, dried fruit, light mint, faint herbs, light citrus. Palate Oily, fresh, wood, light tannins, light mint, light citrus, dried fruit, faint chocolate, spice, faint herbs. Finish Long and warm, fresh, wood, light tannins, light citrus, mint, light berries. The empty glass has light chocolate, menthol, light smoke and light caramel.

I have enjoyed the RC Ed. 44 in the 2-3 tastings so far, not outstanding, but really very good. Nicely spicy and not as "bright" as the FRC (RX18188) recently, but more like dark green, rich leaves with a less dominant menthol note. Contrary to other opinions, for me the TDL has nothing that suggests Caroni, but is a rum with a very typical TDL profile. But that doesn't necessarily mean anything, it's just a personal impression. In any case, I would have given the rum 88 points at the first tasting, and today, after a tasting with a lot of time, I raise it to 89 points with a clear conscience - excellent choice of cask, Dirk!

Comparatively closed up on the nose. Rather wood forwards on the nose as well as on the palate which reduces the liveliness of the profile somewhat. Enjoyable bottling with all the right 2000s TDL markers, just not my favorite out of the bunch.

For me, the first RdL is still the king of the 2002 TDLs. Unfortunately, the sample has been empty for a long time. Here in the crosstasting between the second RdL, the old RA, the RC and the TWJ for Macau, it's probably all about the other places on the podium. I've had the RC in my glass a few times and have always found it difficult to rate it. On the nose it is fruitier but also greener than the RdL #2, the herbs are not as unique here as in the others. Instead, the mango and peach are more pronounced. As in the RA, there are citrus notes here that are reminiscent of bergamot or grapefruit, but are somewhat more acidic overall than in the RA. As in the nose, the mint is not such a dominant note. In the finish, I have a long-lasting freshness like after brushing my teeth and perhaps a clear mint for the first time. It's actually much better than I remember from my first approaches. For me, it's on a par with the RA.

Now the Rumclub also has its TDL from 2002 and this is already very round on the nose with lots of yellow fruit and almost perfectly integrated alcohol. The palate is also typical TDL with peach, mint and menthol, but it is "dirty" at best in the approach, but it remains a well-balanced, very drinkable bottling.

Tasted together with RA T.D.L 2002 The rum club shimmers a shade darker in the glass. In direct comparison, the nose of the RA is more defined. The mint in particular is more clearly recognizable. With the Rumclub, everything is a little masked. It seems to want to make up for this on the palate: a real herbal explosion sets in after 1-2 seconds! At this point, the RA becomes more "dirty" and the Rumclub stays more with the herbs and floral notes and is clearly sweeter and fruitier. This continues in the finish: the RA dabbles more in the dirt while the Rumclub remains very straightforward with the mint, sweetness and fruit. Very good rum, for me one point behind the RA, which seems more versatile and complex. I have to say that the bottle of RA has been open for a while, so the comparison is a little off.

Solid 2002 TDL bottled here by the Rum Club. Typical notes of the new (from the year 2000) TDL profile. In addition to the usual mint and menthol, there is also some peach, which I like very much.

Franconian Tasting Gang 19.04.2024 Crosstasting CDI TDL 2003 16yo (RX944) with the RumClub ed.44 TDL (RX19670). For me, this is the winner of the two. Not as strong on the nose, but rounder, creamier and more elegant on the palate.

On the nose, a nice fruity note at first, with wood, chocolate and a hint of eucalyptus. On the palate again fruit, yellow fruit, again wood with chocolate, a slight bitterness that comes across very pleasantly. This is followed by great fresh eucalyptus notes that remain present in the finish. The 15 years of tropical maturation suit it very well, beautiful complexity. Excellent rum in my eyes.

The 2002 / 21yr RC Ed. 44 has to prove what it can do against the 2001 / 21 yr Rasta Morris. The RC is a little paler in color, on the nose it is also a little more restrained than the RM. The RC is more on herbal candy and medicinal notes. The RM is more on dried fruit / passion fruit and dirty notes. On the palate, the RM is more intense and has a longer finish. Conclusion: I like the RC, but if I had to choose one of the two, it would be the RM.

Peach, menthol, mint. Strong bottling, powerful and yet with very good balance. For me, it is much more similar to 03s than to 01 vintages. I would like the finish to be a little more multi-faceted.

A rather sharp, alcoholic nose then you feel all the complexity carried by a present but well-integrated wood, a vegetal side with menthol and a salty, tar and varnish side. Fresh tropical fruits are clearly in the background. The palate is ample at first then tightens under the influence of bitterness and tannins. Yet you can clearly feel in the background the beautiful fresh fruits and refreshing menthol. The finish remains marked by tannins and woody bitterness and we forget the beautiful fruits of the palate. A somewhat unbalanced rum in my opinion.

A beautiful, old Trinidad. Nose: the typical fresh mint right up front. Intense and simply delicious. Next to it, sour-sweet fruits such as gooseberry and passion fruit with a splash of lime, rounded off with apricot. A light caramel sweetness in the background and a contrasting vinegar-like note. I like it very much. 8.8 Palate: fresh mint up front, now with a little more eucalyptus and slightly salty-bitter. Immediately has a bacony effect, interesting! Gets a slight fruity twist in the direction of gooseberry, but the bacony umami mint remains. Beautiful Trinidat profile with a very respectable age. 8.6

Takes some time in the glass to release its initial woodiness and develop the lovely, light fruity aromas of peaches and lychees, giving the rum a nice complexity. Far in the background, it also has a medicinal side that reminds me a little of a mixture of Pinimenthol and a tar cream. I would have liked even more fruitiness, but I also really like this T.D.L. as it is.

Direct comparison CDI TDL 2003 16yo (rx944) with the RC ed44 TDL (rx19670). In short: The CDI clearly wins on the nose and the RC is actually a bit tastier on the palate – also due to its better alcohol integration.

On the nose iced tea peach and some mint and spices. On the palate, the peach and mint notes again, plus something smoky/charred. The finish is medium-long. ABV very well integrated. Quite a round TDL.

Today a small TDL tasting, with RX13557, RX 944, RX15670, RX 19670, RX15565 and RX20525. The impression of the first tasting is confirmed. Not a bad TDL, with herbs, mint, eucalyptus and other herbal notes. It is also fruity, but without the currants that I know from some other TDLs. Compared to the CDI, the RC is fruitier and the lower ABV also makes the RC more accessible. Overall, however, it is at the lower end of today's TDL scale.

Direct comparison between 3 T.D.L 2002 single casks: 1st RC RX19670: 85 points 2. FRC RX13557: 80 points 3. Rom Deluxe RX20525: 88 points The RC and FRC are similar in profile, with herbs and yellow fruit. The FRC's higher abv is noticeable, and the alcohol could also be better integrated here. The RC has a longer finish. In general, the RC is much more pleasing and more fun. The Dane has a completely different profile, dark fruit, more old wood and more mint. On the palate, it is very dry, intense and heavy, which I really like. I like it best of the three.

I don't know if I've ever had a rum like this before. The first thing that hits your nose is clearly mint, and then the same on the palate. There's also menthol and eucalyptus. It burns a little accordingly, but I like it.

Lots of mint, plus some fruit and wood on the nose. On the palate, I miss the dominant counterpart to the mint, which is still very present. An appealing representative of the post-2000s TDLs, but one that doesn't reach the top shelf.

And here’s the winner of my TDL 2002 tasting! Nose: Wonderful notes of mint, menthol, and eucalyptus, with layers of fruit and baking spices. Absolutely delicious 🤤 Palate: Creamy and intense. Alongside the aromas from the nose, I discovered delightful hints of caramel and candied fruits. Tasted against TDL CDI 2003 / RX1629, TDL RA 2002 / RX7783 and TDL RdL 2002 / RX15565. All 4 rums were allowed to breathe for about half an hour. Nose: The RC 44 is somewhat closed on the nose, but you can subtly perceive bright fruits and very light mint. The CDI 2003 is even more closed, the only thing I perceive is some mirabelle plum or peach. The RA 2002 has a very slight hint of caramel. The RdL 2002 is also quite closed, here I find only very slightly light yellow fruits. Palate: For a 2002, the RC 44 is comparatively herbaceous and bitter on the palate and less sweet. The bright yellow fruits are somewhat in the background and instead it has more herbs. A little water does not necessarily help it to open up further. In comparison, the CDI 2003 is more floral, somewhat fruitier and sweeter and also less bitter. The CDI 2003 doesn't necessarily improve with a little water either, but it does become more drinkable. With the RA 2002, I find a slight caramel at first, followed by light fruit and a slight bitterness. With a little water it opens up a little more and becomes more drinkable. A nice, well-balanced combination of bright yellow fruits and mint, with light caramel, dirt and a herbaceous bitterness in the background. The profile of the RdL 2002 is very similar to the RA 2002, but for me it is a good deal more complex and sophisticated, more multi-faceted. All the aromas of the RA are present, but here they are raised to a higher level. A little water helps to perceive the whole spectrum of aromas even better. Simply a really great rum! Finish: The finish is roughly the same for all 4 TDLs, with the mint lingering a little more in the CDI 2003, the caramel in the RA and the full spectrum of aromas in the RdL. Ranking: 1st RdL 2002 / 89 points 2nd RA 2002 / 87 points 3rd CDI 2003 / 86 points 4th RC 44 / 85 points

This one surprised me a little. Aside from Caroni’s I typically have not been a big fan of Trinidadian rums. I’ve found them interesting but just not what I’d want to be sipping on. Maybe I need to make the effort to try more after this one. This one has woody character on nose and palate but also has lots of herbal and mint/menthol notes. There was quite a bit of stone fruit on the nose as well, although I feel that was largely lost on the palate. I don’t usually love the wood forward rums but this one was kept in check by the prominent herbal and mint notes that kept it fresh, balanced and saved it from being too heavy. Nice complexity, surprisingly pleasant and it has me interested in keeping an open mind to more Trinidadian rums moving forward.

Nice fruity note, with wood and chocolate. There is also a bit of mustiness. On the palate again fruit, yellow fruit, wood with chocolate, a slight bitterness that comes across very pleasantly and a little tar. Fresh tea notes then come through and remain present in the finish. Excellent rum in my eyes. Not quite cheap but really tasty.

Stylish representative of the TDLs. A touch behind the RA in direct comparison. The price development of these rums is also not really pleasing, in my opinion there are now better price/enjoyment alternatives.

My first rum from Trinidad and what can I say. Different from everything else I've had in the glass so far. This mint is really amazing and fits perfectly with the rum. Otherwise, I also have a lot of allspice in the nose. On the palate again mint overload. But more Moroccan mint and less peppermint. Here too it convinces me and is totally different from everything else I've drunk so far. And when I read that it is supposed to be a bit weaker compared to other rums from Trinidad, I can hardly wait to get the other representatives from Trinidad in the glass. It convinced me, but I still lack comparisons.

This rum club really suits my taste. I like the slightly dirty note that reminds me a little of Caronis. Of course, it's not quite comparable, but it's also much cheaper. The design of the bottle is also very cool this time.

The nice TDL from next door and it could be anyone... Down-to-earth TDL with eucalyptus, menthol, wood and a slight bitterness. Super daily sipper, but no exotic or exceptional talent. The price is a bit too high for that. My full bottle will probably have to move on.

Very good and very strong TDL representative, which brings out the typical and characteristic notes of a 2001/2002 TDL. Here, the dirty menthol note is very well expressed on the nose and palate. The alcohol is very well integrated! Excellent rum!

On the nose, this TDL is fruity with light ethereal notes at first sniff. With a little air, the wood comes through more. The 58.4% is very mild on the nose in both cases. On the palate, there is a nice combination of fresh fruit and a menthol freshness that is more reminiscent of eucalyptus. The alcohol content is also very subtle here. The aromas linger on the finish and leave a pleasantly warming sensation.

A great TDL. Has everything it needs. The cask influence is spot on. It never gets musty but stays fresh. Everything fits here. Nice and round. Almost too round, because it's easy to drink. But blaming the rum for that would be absurd. Great stuff... Is there still OVP in the shop? Exactly. You can't tell anyone. And with the current TDL prices.
