Here's the twist: this 19-year Foursquare from Schotman isn't the polite, tidy Barbadian you might expect. A few tasters caught real ester and glue on the nose, one even calling it "almost comparable to a Hampden." Underneath sits the classic bourbon-cask profile — coconut, caramel, vanilla, toasted wood. At 57% the alcohol shows; some love how it's woven in, others find it not quite integrated.

Tasted blind with some other Foursquare bottlings. Overall, for me the most rounded Foursquare with the classic profile and a pronounced coconut note. A slightly floral note on the palate, which I particularly notice in the 2005 bottlings. The alcohol is very well integrated. Still for me a picture book Foursquare without rough edges.

A rum tasted at the GRF in 2024. A lively nose with pastry notes, young wood and bitter caramel. A soft entry on the palate, then marked by alcohol, fruit and caramel. The finish is short, with lots of caramel. A pleasantly lively and vigorous rum, a little too marked by caramel for my taste.

8,7:On the nose, toasted wood notes like butterscotch, roasted nuts, pastry, biscuits, spicy vanilla, coconut, yellow fruits, dried apricots, raisins, figs and citrus fruits, some glue, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, the molasses is vegetal, thick, dark with licorice, tropical fruits like pineapple and berries join, fermented, spicy nutmeg, cinnamon. 8,4:On the palate, the attack is slightly alcoholic, but oily with toasted wood notes like caramel, nuts, chocolate, confectionery, a bit sweet, spicy, slightly resinous, fruity with coconut, dried apricots, raisins, citrus fruits and on oxidation cherry, bourbon barrel impact is noticable, the molasses is fresh with tea. 8,5:The finish is long, dry&tannic, balanced, with candied molasses, flowery, slightly minty, fruity with dried citrus fruits and coconut, banana, as the oak is toasted, spicy, smoky. Then probably the last good rum for today :-( Definitely a really very good rum. The nose is very fruity, vanilla and caramel are also noticeable. On the palate also vanilla and caramel, as well as some coconut.

30-08-2025 - Rate 8.4 German Rum Festival After the Bison grass “shot” we switched over to the barrel selections. First stop was Barbados Foursquare. 19 years with 11 years in tropics. Nose of caramel, wood, dried fruits and nuts. Palate of wood, caramel, dried fruits and a hint of coconut. Wie zu erwarten war, kommt hier natürlich das klassische Foursquare-Profil aus dem Bourbonfass ins Glas, wobei ich mit dieser Fassauswahl sehr zufrieden bin. Der Rum besitzt eine tolle karamellige Textur mit einer feinen, natürlichen Grundsüße und auch die Fruchtaromen kommen nicht zu knapp. Beim Abgang sind dann noch die 19 Jahre Eichenkontakt anhand eines ansprechenden und harmonisch abrundenden Gewürzbeitrags erkennbar.

Whisky n‘more 2026: Dieser Barbados ist eine positive Überraschung. Er erinnert mich sehr an den Stades von Dirk Becker..viel Ester/Lösungsmittel und Frucht..an der Nase fast vergleichbar mit einem Hampden. Auch am Gaumen zunächst diese fordernden Aromen, die anschließend weicher werden, Kokosnuss und etwas Holz gesellen sich dazu. Dieses setzt sich im Abgang fort..sehr schöne Fassauswahl von Erik 👍🏻

I don't understand at all why this rum gets so little attention here. For me, this is a wonderfully balanced Foursquare, very velvety with lots of coconut and incredibly round. A great bottling from Schotman! If only it weren't for the very ambitious price...

Alles in allem wie zu erwarten ein typischer Foursquare, wie man ihn erwartet. Nichts wirklich außergewöhnliches was ihn von anderen Abfüllungen hervor heben würde. Denoch von hoher Qualität wie gewohnt.

... Foursquare is a distiller from Barbados producing amazing rums for everyday drinking. It's a rum that will be appreciated especially by Rumarians who are fed up with sugar and are looking for a smooth, sweet rum full of coconut, vanilla, chocolate and caramel. Just pleasant and not aggressive flavours.

Well, that was good. No alcohol, wonderfully smooth taste of coconut, caramel, milk chocolate vanilla. I didn't expect it at all and I'm really pleasantly surprised how interestingly smooth the Schotmans managed to fill the cask!t

I've known Eric for a few years now and he always has exciting rums. I tried the Fourquare for the first time at GRF2024 and then again in Bremen at the Bottlemarket. I find it wonderfully round and velvety. The alcohol is noticeable but well integrated. Nice and warm in the mouth. Vanilla, wood and toffee.

The color - as other rums - dark yellow, honey, light brown…nothing special here The nose- sweet caramel, wood and coconut, spice The taste- caramel and coconut with some tones of floral and spice. Apart from others I feel alcoholic taste - it’s not very well integrated, but maybe it needs some time to rest in the glass.. Overall not bad rum, but the price is challenging…

Discovered this rum during a tasting at rum depot in Berlin. Pleasant surprise. I tasted the 19 and 17 simultaneously. This is a very good rum. Fantastic balanced taste. I do prefer the 17 over the 19. Due to that the alcohol seems better integrated in the 17.
