Savanna 2023 Limited Edition HERR 2019
Here's the surprise: this is high-ester funk that doesn't come from Jamaica. Reunion's Savanna leans on nail-polish solvent and glue, but the fruit is where it wins people over — strawberry candy, overripe pineapple and banana, that Haribo-meets-menthol thing several tasters keep mentioning. Unaged and 57%, yet the alcohol sits well integrated. Loud, synthetic, genuinely fun.

Loud, fruity Reunion ester bomb, unaged The consensus is warm — a fruit-forward, unaged ester bomb most drinkers find genuinely fun to sip. A few call it too synthetic and medicinal, but that's the profile.

The 2023 bottling is once again on top... for me it comes close to the Habiation Velier bottling. Not quite as present on the nose as this one, but almost on a par on the palate. I mixed a cocktail straight away (mojito) and had a real taste sensation. This is how the white HERR must be 🤩 Edit: Tasted again in the Savanna Masterclass. My rating remains

Phew, the nose is already full of HERR. Wild, overripe fruit (strawberries, mango, pineapple) and some nail polish. Really fun on its own. But it really comes into its own as a highlight ingredient in cocktails. 🍸
Review by Timo Groeger
Post-tasting Masterclass Savanna Highlights Ester. This time a HERR. Predominantly esters and pineapple on the nose, but also slightly metallic. Also esters and pineapple on the palate, but the alcohol could be better integrated. Reminds me a little of fruit brandy. Still really good.
Review by cigares
Tasting of the Savanna high ester. A nose with lots of fruit, tropical (pineapple) but also red fruits. Solvents, a synthetic side and modeling clay. The alcohol is well integrated and on the palate the fruits also compete with synthetic and medicinal aromas. The finish is short, still on the same aromas with a little sweet and creamy side that was not felt before.
Review by DomM
On the nose this one turns up the classic strawberry and menthol candy/chewing gum notes, really. Very intense and ticking the HERR boxes for me. Similar picture on the palate with lots of funk. This is genuinely fun to drink. A bit ahead of the 2022 edition for me.

Savanna Masterclass by RumX on 27.09.2024 Thank you for the opportunity to taste these great rums side by side. Now there have been a few more changes for some. Savanna is more complex than expected.
Review by Vincent D
This new HERR seemed better than the previous one. A sensation of better integration of the alcohol. It's extreme and insanely long. Not an everyday drink, but truly unique. Very ripe fruit, esters, light brine. A lot of fun.
Review by Fred Tillac
👃 = The chemical smell of ester solvent is immediately noticeable but with a surprising softness enhanced by yellow fruits, vegetal notes, and a bit of red fruits. 👄 = The attack is frank and tangy with an explosion of olive, pepper, ripe fruits ending on a creamy finish.
Review by Tschusikowsky
Nice but not really my thing neat. Medicinal iodine notes paired with fruit components like raspberry, pineapple. Has something of glucose or gummy bears. Slightly bitter on the finish. I think I should try it in a cocktail.
Review by Tim
An extraordinary demonstration of what a high-ester rum looks like outside the Jamaica world. Intensely pineapple, berries, sour fruits and a hint of vegetal aromas. The mouth continues similarly and I think you can also drink this white rum neat.

Savannah High Ester Masterclass. You just either like the profile or you don’t. But I’m not so eager to buy the whites anymore as I once was. Especially with the new aged versions...
Review by LukaŽiga
8,3:On the nose, the first impression is intense with esters, solvents and overripe tropical fruits like banana, pineapple, then strawberry and an orange, a bit spicy and vegetal, quickly becoming pungent, almost rotten, alkali. On aeration, yeast, mushroom notes are present, some chocolate, perhaps rubber and another layer of fruits like lemon peel, mandarine and raspberry. 8,4:On the palate, the attack is again strong with esters and overripe tropical and red fruits, bitter orange, a bit smoky, quickly turns into pungent and almost rotten tones.Sometimes we get a feeling of a drinking fruit schnapps. After resting the rum, confectionery notes pop out, with bread, yeast, pepper and sugarcane flavour, sometimes manure overtones overwhelm our tasting buds, a bit unpleasant, luckily balanced by blackcurrant, lemon peel and mandarine, turning into candied fruits, as some vegetal nuances arise. 8,2:The finish is medium, dry, spicy, medicinal, less round, sweeter, with similar notes as on the palate, then leather and almonds...
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
Somewhat unripe pineapple, raspberry yoghurt and rather herbal on the nose. For me, the 2023 batch also has nothing to do with the old unaged Herr qualities. I like it better than the 2022 batch, but unfortunately I find it rather disappointing overall compared to the old savannas like the velier white savanna 62.5%.

#4944 27.09.2024 Tasting with representatives from Savanna while streaming to the RumX community. Nose Fresh, medium intense, ester, citrus, light mint, floral, light glue. Palate Medium intense, medium dry, ester, fresh, citrus, light berries, olive, faint salt, light nutts, light glue, faint floral, light mint. Finish Long and warm, ester, oily, citrus, light mint, medium dry, light berries.
Review by TheRhumhoe
A heavy Savanna in its raw state. The nose is overwhelmed by chemical notes ranging from strawberry Haribo candies to esters, glue, solvents, metallic notes and overripe fruits (pineapple, banana, raspberry). There is a slightly spicy side that gives a little extra to this ultra concentrated nose. The attack on the palate is powerful, medicinal and very funky. Notes of eau-de-vie, candied fruits, tropical fruits and red fruits take the stage ahead of vegetal and phenolic notes. It could almost be chewed like chewing gum with the same chemical flavors. The alcohol is very well integrated in this aromatic and intense ensemble. The finish continues what is perceived on the nose and palate, a concentrate of fruits and esters of all kinds, but with a little touch of spices, leather and candied notes. A Savanna that has everything to please and just asks to be aged to give a new Réunion unicorn.
Review by Leo Krüper
Better than the 2022 in my opinion. Clearly fruitier.
Review by Boletus
The unaged HERR is always a pleasure. Occasionally it shimmers a bit metallic, but the lasting aromas of pineapple and berries bring joy long after swallowing. Savanna Masterclass online tasting on 27.09.2024, many thanks to the RumX team.
Review by Basti
Compared to the other Savanna HERR (HERR 57 #2, #3 and #4), the crosstasting is much more artificial, synthetic and medicinal. I still like the nose relatively well, even if it does drop off considerably compared to the other HERRs. Unfortunately, the palate is disappointing for me. Medicinal, highly artificial/synthetic, somewhat reminiscent of toothpaste. Doesn't have much in common with the other Savanna HERRs.

Savanna Herr blanc 57. This is simply white rum that’s fun. I can’t compare much here like others because I hardly know the older versions. Probably there were more intense bottlings, but we are here and now. But even here there’s no lack of intensity. Great rum and since I already tried it in a Daiquiri, I know it just tastes delicious!

Tasted at Rhum Fest Paris 2024. This is one of the savanna I love, the only sidenote is that for a couple of hours after the dram nothing was even noticeable:S Typical Herr, explosive and long lasting in the mouth. I love it
Review by TheJackDrop
Notes taken at Rhum Fest 2024, Quick notes and a bit heavy palate, sorry :) What we have here: amazing esters, but above all, fruit! A rum: powerful, room-filling, strawberry tagada, very fun. Finish: long, intense

RumX Savanna Masterclass 27.09.2024: The palate reaches its limit. But there's still some in the sample for a future tasting. The impression at the end of the evening is that this is a great HERR with plenty of pineapple gummy bears. Looking forward to tasting it properly again.
Review by Martin Spooner
Insanely strong nose. Very fruity. The pineapple really hits hard. The taste is intense. The pineapple is almost oversized. Compared to the lontan I would rather prefer the grand Arome. Confirmed in the retasting.
Review by Nicofr
Usually used to strong esters from Jamaica, I admit this Savanna HERR is a nice surprise, although less powerful, it manages to have its own style and flavors. A very pleasant mix of solvent and ripe fruits.
Review by Michael Ihmels 🇩🇪
A nice conclusion to the Savanna tasting. Again a very tasty Herr with typical ester taste and the strawberries are recognizable again. Many thanks to RumX and Oliver for this great tasting.
Review by Jan Lu
Savanna Masterclass. The last unaged in the bunch. As far as I can still judge, this one is also quite pleasant with citrus fruits and a certain freshness. My recommendation would still be the Lontan.
Review by AlPhilipo
A brilliant high ester rum from Savanna. Even when opening the bottle, a compote of fruit and ester rises. Its 57% is not noticeable. An absolute beast in a Daiquiri. The Lontan is already great – this is another level up. 100% pot style.

A comparison must come soon!
Review by Gianca Zil
White herr is the classic rum with which I would even have breakfast. Tried it at rhum fest and it won me over right away even though personally ( and perhaps I am bucking the trend) I preferred 2022 in which the briny note is more pronounced.
Review by ThreeH
Tasted this rum in a lineup of 8 unaged bottlings from the Agricole spectrum and the High Ester spectrum. And it was the best when considered as a solo rum – so not as a mixer rum. Overall, the best unaged rum I've had in the glass so far. On the nose, a mix of fruity ester notes, underlined with a fine sweetness. Present but not overwhelming. No thought that it would be better in a mixer. Also on the palate, bold but still elegant. The aromatic richness easily carries into a long finish. The aroma is complex on the fruit esters, combined with this richness-giving slightly sweet undertone. It was the only high ester representative that also made an exceptionally good impression in a Caipirissima. Bravo.

Rums from the Savanna distillery are some of my favorites. I recommend everyone try especially the ester-rich pieces like Grand Arôme or HERR. You haven't smelled so much fruit in a few drops of liquid for a long time.
Review by Jakob
A white rum with astonishing quality. You definitely have to like the HERR profile to be won over here; but objectively the aromatic intensity is impressive. The fruit notes clearly take center stage, but are fully up to the task and convince with presence and structure. Mint, medicinal notes and a hint of minerality come along as well. Great quality!

Bought this one (together with several others) down at Savanna Distillery's shop in Reunion, where I have to travel due to work. The location is awesome there. So do the people. And a quick side note, if you're planning to travel there: ALL tastings we had were free. Not sure if it was because we bought a couple of bottles or not, but was a kind gesture nonetheless. This bottle was obviously the last sample at the shop but it made sure that I needed to buy one.

Beautiful unaged bomb 😍
Review by Niels LTAR
A very special rum, in the continuity of the other Herr. Grand aroma rum, very much on tropical fruits (banana and ripe pineapple), with a very special tangy side reminding me of Harlequin candy. Divisive anyway, you either love it or you don't! The tangy fruity side works very well paired with a rich raw/gravlax salmon.

mastery of white rum production, it is brilliant
Review by bbo1990
An explosive high-ester bomb that balances sour lactic fruitiness with industrial power. The nose bursts with strawberry, sour citrus and a hint of melon alongside chemical tones, mint, and a yoghurt-like dairy sharpness. Think Yogurette without the chocolate. On the palate, it hits dry and strong with heavy glue, polish, and solvent funk, opening up to bergamot, lemon, floral accents, and a crack of black pepper.
Review by Kasper
Impressive. Level: difficult. Quite a lot of notes for only 626 esters. Good balance with the alkohol. It gives me a Bassets wine gums and metallic umami taste. I think I will be tasting this bottle a lot of times to get my arms around it. Great experience that I don't have quite like it, maybe with a La Perle, but much sweeter and aged than, and a lot more citrus sweets taste to accompany. Absolutely wonderful.

To me it has way too artificial, chemical profile.
