A rum tasted at Rhum Fest Paris in 2024. A rum raisin nose with lots of tropical fruit, esters, spices and pepper. The palate is elegant, with plenty of fruit. The finish could be a little longer, marked by citrus peel. Good value for money here. But don't delay, there are less than 1,000 bottles available.

Edit: Tried it again in a freestyle tiki, it's definitely a lot better there, so it's been adjusted upwards a little. How should I start? Blindly, I wouldn't guess Barbados but Jamaica. Gives a nice ester taste. But what I personally find annoying is that I have such a sugar taste on my lips afterwards. Unfortunately, this makes it too sweet for me, more like a liqueur, spiced rum or definitely with dosage. Even though it's not supposed to have any dosage. Unfortunately, that breaks its neck, I probably had too high expectations.

Blindly, I would definitely have guessed Jamaica here. Very nice, funky rum that's fun to drink. Unfortunately, it falls off a little in the finish and disappears too quickly. Nevertheless, a delicious rum and an exciting experiment from Barbados. Great value for money.

Distilled on the Vulcan chamber still (in batches). On the nose I am with low ester Jamaica, with candied fruits, spices, fermented fruits, chutney, plus a bit of green vegetables. On the palate similar: candied fruits, vegetal notes.

Young and fresh with lots of esters on the nose plus citrus fruits, kumquat and yeast. The intensity increases on the palate and a hint of dirt is added. Not like the Caroniwerkstall but more like crazy Clairins. Or even better: like really good mezcal - slightly smoky! The finish is slightly bitter, blood oranges and licorice. Not bad and gives hope for further exciting bottlings!

Funky, fresh, fruity and somehow burnt (especially in the finish) and wild. The alcohol could be better integrated. I taste intense orange or lemon peel here, sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't. Thanks Zabo

Super exciting! I would have blindly guessed Jamaica, most likely Long Pond. More overripe fruit on the finish, almost reminds me of strawberry from Savanna Herr. Very cool!

#5030 04.01.2025 Relaxing at home with some samples. Nose Light wood, faint smoke, fruity, solvent, light sour, light pineapple, light citrus, faint caramel. Palate Oily, medium spicy, wood, light roasted, fruity, light metallic, light pineapple, medium intense, faint caramel. Finish Long and warm, medium spicy, wood, light roasted, fruits, light citrus, faint medicinal, medium intense. The empty glass has light chocolate, spice and a light sour note.

Nice release that makes you hope for more (and higher quality) in this style. The nose is very different from the palate here. Nose very Jamaica with lots of pineapple, citrus, fermented, esters and also a bit smoky bacon. On the palate then something that tastes like stone fruit brandy/cherry brandy/maraschino. Also a bit alcoholic. But with a bit more aging, surely much more potential.

Great complexity, on the nose still with plenty of fresh fruitiness, glue, wood, spices, heavy sweetness. Tart and spicy aromas are added on the palate, which is somewhat at the expense of the fruitiness and introduces a gentle but recognizable astringency on the finish; the profile is pleasingly broad and offers a lot. A great release and a promise for the future of West Indies rums.

Exciting promising nose that definitely convinces. In the mouth then quite strict with wood and ester. But unfortunately also alcoholic. Finish unfortunately does not convince me either. Exciting bottling and I look forward to more rums from WIRD with higher ester content.

Let me start with bottle - I rarely write something about the looks of the bottle but this label is just astonishing and in addition with the red wax capsule (not the plastic fake wax) a real gem to look at. But let’s proceed with the more important part: The nose starts of as a funky Jamaican with some sweet notes. Some wood and a lot of fruits are accompanied by Mezcal (?!). The alcohol is integrated really good, let’s taste it. Pretty strong, I expected something more elegant. On the palate the age is much more obvious. Nevertheless, funky, fruity and a nice smokiness. See details above. The finish is also young and Jamaican with some Mezcal. Overall a really nice drop and I am looking forward to try it in a Daiquiri.

A welcome breath of freshness on the island of Barbados offering here a high esters rum distilled in a Vulcan still. The nose offers elegant esters on glue and generous tropical fruits at first (banana, pineapple, lemon and its zest). However, there is a slightly fermentative and pastry side on caramel, candied fruits and honey, then spicy notes on vanilla and chili that enhance this round, sweet and very creamy profile. The texture becomes very syrupy and sticky on the palate. The pastry side comes out with candied fruits, honey and sugar, which accompany the esters (glue) and the fruity notes, again very exotic on pineapple and lemon. The profile is very round, soft, slightly spicy and terribly drinkable. The alcohol is well integrated. The finish, moderately long, is comforting, warm and just as indulgent. Salty and licorice notes join the citrus (lemon), sweet aromas of caramel and mild spices (vanilla, chili, pepper). A rum with a young, accessible and aromatic profile, with an excellent quality/price ratio.

From the smell I would have guessed an unaged, fruity and fresh. The taste doesn't really pick me up. Very alcoholic and sharp-edged. Not a classic rum from Barbados, unfortunately. The finish is short and flat.

Today is then leftover use, but first two decent samples. In the nose we have lots of ester here, as well as tropical fruits, especially pineapple. On the palate the same, but here citrus fruits are added.

This Stade's Rum, JAWS Barbados 2022, is more Jamaican than Barbadian in style. On the nose, it's already a bit exuberant, and this continues throughout the tasting. Fruity notes dominate the nose with woody and ester touches. On the palate, you find the indulgent side of Barbados with an agricultural and ester character. The rather long finish is very pleasant with beautiful citrus and vanilla notes.

An interesting blend of sweetness (tonka bean, vanilla, baking aroma), tropical fruits (banana, pineapple, papaya) and nail polish remover. It has something, but it's a little too sweet and unbalanced for me. Still seems to have room for improvement. 83/100 or 6/10

A special Barbados, as it was probably distilled at Vulcan and is therefore rather atypical... Nose: yeah, clearly more Jamaican than Barbados with distinct esters and sweet-sour fruits. Pineapple, orange, and lemon as well as cherry and banana. The lemon seems artificial, like candied lemon or dish soap. It becomes increasingly sweeter, syrup and caramel. Slightly spicy and finely woody at the back. Pleasant and very intense and room-filling nose with a bit too much candied lemon. 8.1 Palate: Lime and lemon upfront and again rather artificial like candied lemon. Slightly bitter yet sweet. Citrus syrup and somehow again citrus dish soap. The 57% fits well, but the young age shows in the lack of complexity. But I think it works very well as a mixer and should be understood as such. By the way, it has a very long finish with lime-ester syrup. 7.9

Hard to think of Barbados when opening the bottle. You'd rather think of Jamaica. It's a moderately ester-heavy profile, somewhat like Clarendon. It's very citrusy with a Barbadian sweetness. It's pleasant but a bit spicy for me. And clearly expensive for a 6-month rum. Edit: airing does this bottle good. The alcohol softens without losing the interesting aspects.

An enjoyable rum, lots of Jamaica on the nose that's for sure, esters and tropical Fruits. Not quite so much in the mouth but still good, more tropical fruits with a lingering sweetness which made me think why that could be? A nice everyday rum.

The nose is blindly reminiscent of a high ester rum from Jamaica and makes you want more, very fruity and intense. The taste is surprisingly dry, salty and smoky. It is subtly reminiscent of mezcal and has a little too much wood influence for me overall. I would have liked a little more fruit here in terms of flavor. The alcohol is also quite present. All in all, an exciting high ester experiment from Barbados!

Now I have to rate the Jaws as well, after having had it several times in the glass. I find this bottling absolutely successful. I am already looking forward to more and older vintages of this rum! I find this ester and sour fruit mix very harmonious and tasty. Neat, as well as a mixer.

Exotic fruit aromas with pineapple in the foreground, the esters are well present but more moderate than I expected. The alcohol is really well integrated, the 56% go down like a letter in the mail. A nice surprise from Barbados but with a lack of intensity and length, prolonged aging would surely do it a lot of good. This is just my humble opinion.

Really nice Jamaica ester nose. And then on the palate so completely different. The fruity Jamaica esters from the nose are hardly found in the taste. Instead, a slight bitterness, a bit of plastic and ester that you rather know from Fiji rums. You wait for the fruits, but they don't come as the nose promised. Probably just too tuned to Jamaica. For me an exciting rum, I'm curious what longer aging will make of it.

👃🏼 = aromas of banana, pineapple, olive, coconut, butter, smoke, and the pleasant 'solvent' of esters jump to the nose. 👄 = after the lively and acidic attack, in a somewhat creamy texture, express a compote of ripe fruits, more present olive, honey, lemon, and a bit of caramel leading to a normal pastry length. This Stade rum gave me a good time like in a tropical orchard in full sun 👍

Well...it's quite ok to drink straight. Much better for mixing. The alcohol is not quite so well integrated. The citrus fruit aroma and the clear ester are very positive. I'm curious to see what else Stades will come up with...

A real little jam this Barbados! When opening the bottle, it fills the whole room and even beyond! We are right in the very ripe exotic fruits, the esters. All that explodes in the mouth, it's concentrated and a good saliva reduction is necessary. The finish is just as exuberant, and long-lasting.

Very unusual for Barbados. Esters with overripe pineapple. Wonderful. Intense citrus notes in taste. More robust profile. However, also slightly sharp. Medium-long finish. Not a thirst quencher rum, rather something to drink occasionally.

Cool twist from Jamaica and Barbodos, initially funk and fermented fruit. Very sweet on the nose. Then on the palate comes strong alcohol parried with honey, barrel and fruit again. The finish is over quickly but quite successful for sipping comfortably.

Fruity, sweet nose: blood orange, grapefruit, canned pineapple, lychee and some ester. Does not quite meet my expectations on the palate: quince, maple syrup, papaya, some acidity and slightly metallic, gets nicely warm in the back, some licorice remains.

First tasting in peace and quiet with the buddy, on the nose I hesitate between Jamaica and a Clairin. This Olive comes out first, then esters, fruits, smoke... after a while, a vanilla appears out of nowhere, a surprise! On the palate, it's fruit and esters, against a background of Olive. It explodes on the palate, hard to grasp at first, but very gripping. The finish is a little short, showing that this is a young rum after all, but with another 10 years, it could become a folly! In short, you need to project yourself a little :) Nb: the clarin and Mezcal notes of the first nose come back in the glass. A superb discovery that's well worth the detour for lovers of Jamaica, clarin and Mezcal; that's for sure!

I can only agree with the positive reviews here. Relatively complex, somewhat towards low-ester Jamaica, plus a note that reminds me of dill. Nice mouthfeel, but the finish is a bit short and unspectacular. Let's see what comes in the future.

High-ester from the W.I.R.D. Vulcan style. Somehow I expected a lot but didn't get quite that much. Definitely decent esters, mainly citrus fruits like pineapple, lemon and orange. Apart from that, somehow a bit thin and characterless. Maybe there will be something better in the future, but for me it's not a real enrichment.

After tasting this rum again, I lower my rating because I find an imbalance between bitterness, acidity, and sweetness highlighting the youth of this rum counterbalanced by a high congeners level. Looking forward to tasting an older version.

High-ester from Barbados?! Interesting, basically nicely fruity, with subtle honey, wood, and spice notes. On the palate, however, somewhat sharp and unbalanced. Very citrus-heavy, floral earthy or somewhat musty. Overall a good middle ground with room for improvement.

The nose give prominent Jamician ester. Immediate taste is a young Jamaican and lays sweet on the palate. I get this weird lite floral soap after taste. It says it’s not dosed but there is a lingering taste that makes me 🤔

This is an interesting rum. It contrasts with Jamaican rums, it has a yeasty flavor profile, with mainly pineapple and tropical fruits at it's core. I also get a bubblegum note on the nose. It really worth trying.

I have been holding off posting any reviews on RumX due to feeling the need to become "a more experienced and skilled taster" in order to keep data more qualitative and trustable. But today, after years of procrastination, It's finally time to make my first review even though I perhaps don't feel quite ready yet. But hey, you have to start somewhere, right? 🙃 JAWS has a lot of character and is interesting for its price point. It shares similarities with Jamaican distillates, having both aromas and flavors of fermented tropical fruits and marzipan, and despite the short aging it has quite nice cask-influences with subtle wood and pastry notes. However, to my nose and palate, it has this particular hogo-note that I also find in certain Savannas. To put it in an elegant way; it's this sour, rank barnyard funk aroma reminiscent of manure. To put it less elegantly, it smells like your feces when you are sitting on the toilet ultra-hungover after drinking two bottles of red wine the night before. This note is taking way too much presence in both the aroma spectrum and finish, and is simply too off-putting to me, bringing down the rating quite a bit. It's unfortunate, given that the rum actually is quite okay apart from this hogo-note. Alcohol integration is quite poor and I have mostly been using this rum for cocktails where I can mask this off-putting character a bit. Frankly, I'm quite "happy" that I've finally finished the bottle. Fun to have tried it and to get a glimpse of the WIRD Vulcan DNA, but I find it somewhat interchangeable (and even outshined) by a Hampden HLCF Classic.

As most descriptions will mention, this Barbados rum tasted more like a Jamaican rum. It has a fruity, estery and slightly tart profile. It does not feel very complex though. It would be interesting to see how this rum develops with a few years of extra maturation in the barrel.

Lots to say about this rum. For a 14-day fermentation, distilled on the John Dore and the Old Gregg, I must admit I was rather disappointed. I expected to be shaken up a bit more. It’s clearly a product very rich in volatile substances but the finish is rather short. You have to come back regularly. The really interesting point is this saltiness (iodine). The approach is excellent and it’s a rum to taste.

After smelling it, I would have guessed MM Jamaica at first, but as soon as the glass is inhaled, the esters have disappeared, immediately there is a Barbadian smell of dried tropical fruits, citrus, maybe pineapple? The taste is much more complex. There's a youthfulness, but also a smoothness. Lots of citrus and citrus zest on the finish (to the point of bitterness), then the buttery esters again and the finish is bitter to the point of spicy. Definitely an interesting and atypical Barbados that is worth trying.

An ester profile that suggests a clairin or a low Jamaican. Quite fruity aromas (tropical at first, then turning to bitter orange) and sweet (+ a hint of smokiness?) to be appreciated when you're not used to this type of profile, of which it seems a good entry point. The price might seem high given its youth.
