Made for drinkers already deep into Savanna's HERR world, this 8-year, 59.4% pot-still bomb from Reunion tastes like strawberry gummy bears, pineapple and green apple wrapped in menthol, solvent and a light oak toast. Most tasters call it the most elegant, "a bit more balanced than Herrline" HERR they've had, though the artificial-fruit, acetone edge isn't for everyone. A few found it overrated for what it is.

Whoa! So I find this rum in every way... somehow... exaggerated. Exaggeratedly strawberry. Exaggeratedly ester. Exaggeratedly strong. Exaggeratedly round (is that even possible?). Exaggeratedly good (that really can't be 😉). But unfortunately also exaggeratedly expensive. Update 2026-07-11: Small high-end cross tasting where RX25324 and RX20991 swap ranking places, otherwise my previous scores are confirmed: RX25324 93 points RX20991 91 points RX24528 90 points RX20222 89 points RX20538 87 points

Savanna Herr...love it or hate it. Definitely not my cup of tea (yet). Reminds me of many a horrible Obstler.... But very happy to be able to taste the samples. And maybe I'll like this gentleman in 5 years or so... In any case, very complex and multi-layered. The alcohol is perfectly integrated. Update May 2025: still creepy

Excellent HERR bottling. Not as brute as the HERR LMDW 60th, for example, but the strong fruit component provides a nice counterpoint to the high ester associations. "Accessible" and yet multi-layered HERR.

After tasting it for over 40 minutes, I can quite understand why this rum was chosen in a starred restaurant in Paris... For a grand arome savanna, this one is really elegant and full-bodied. The typical aromas of strawberry and pineapple are complemented by rich, juicy blackberries, vanilla pulp, green Granny Smith apple and candied ginger. The alcohol is incredibly well integrated, the 15 years in the cask do not interfere at any point and overall this is really a very tasty drop and gives hope for more great grand arome rums from Savanna! Great cinema! In a direct comparison with the Swell Herrline 2009, it definitely has the edge for me!

Little Savanna GA & HERR cross tasting: Very fruity on the nose. Intense and to die for. Way more elegant and better balanced compared to the LMDW. Excellent on the palate as well. The balance between esters, fruits, wood and some herbal notes is truely amazing here. I can absolutely see this alongside top notch cuisine.

Tasting of the Savanna high ester and a big Savanna tasting with Artur. A nose with obvious elegance. An instant classic. The distillery markers are there but wrapped and magnified, clearly present but without excess. The alcohol is perfect on the palate, just present enough to enhance the aromas: old wood, menthol, red fruits, bitter herbs. The finish is very long with just the right amount of bitterness, esters, red fruits, and sandalwood. A success! Retasted with about thirty other Savanna rums and it seems a bit less exceptional, less complex, especially compared to the RumX and The Virtues.

Savanna Masterclass High Ester: This GENTLEMAN is a real highlight… he has a consistent elegance, even though he doesn't skimp on esters, strawberry gummy bears, and gentle spices. Wick blue / ice candy meets the artificial Savanna strawberry with a little olive, salt and cocoa. Very elegant. Very few flavors, but they really pack a punch. Best gentleman I have tasted. Tasted again in the Savanna high ester master class and I confirm my first tasting: the exuberant variety of aromas of the HERR profile is reduced here unnoticed to a few main aromas and that's great. Put another ounce on top

Savanna Masterclass by RumX on 27.09.2024 Thank you for the opportunity to taste these great rums side by side. Now there have been a few more changes for some. Savanna is more complex than expected. So how to start with this rum? Not the mega complex one, but Mr. in his deepest pure form! I would compare it to grandma's fancy noodles, a simple dish that neither the mother nor the wife can manage, even though it is a simple dish without much blingbling. It's the same with rum. For me, it's the perfection of strawberry Hubabubba with Wickblau sweets. I don't think it gets any better than that.

Enormous aromatic density with pronounced solvent notes, fermented fruits, citrus zest and a hint of acetone. Behind that, floral nuances, some herbaceousness and a fine, wild sweetness show up. Raw, intense and incredibly characterful – a powerful rum with a clear HERR signature.

Post-tasting Masterclass Savanna high Ester. Wow, the HERR blanc Paris belongs to the world class of rums for me. Great nose, esters, tropical fruits, but strawberry is also recognizable. Complexity and balance in top form. Roasted barley here too, awesome. Strawberry, somewhat tart, subtle light blue cheese notes. Esters are very exquisitely present and integrated, great! Very nice body and I particularly like the finish.

An extreme nose. Extremely fruity, tastes more like strawberry than a ripe strawberry. Ester, solvent and more menthol than a Fishermans Friends. And still round. Extreme in the mouth. Arrack, caraway, menthol, solvent and artificial. Pineapple!!! Hardly furry, which usually really turns me off when it comes to rums from the past. Warming finish. Not for every day, but an experience. Many thanks to Bonn for this specialty. 🤩🤩

This Savanna is also right at the top. The nose is simply super intense, fruity and picks me up completely. The palate is also simply a firework of aromas. Everything you would expect from a top HERR. Alcohol perfectly integrated. Unfortunately, the price is not so affordable, so this will remain a sample.

This is very high Savanna quality. Very well balanced, alcohol perfectly integrated. Not as brutal as the LMDW HERR bottling. The typical notes are rather somewhat reduced and also an pleasantly slightly bitter wood note in the finish.

The oak contribution is more of a quiet companion; rather, the cask provides a fine toasty base mood, which elegantly showcases the immensely fruity esters. Outstanding! The nice thing about a masterclass is that you can also try rare rums like this bottling. And what can I say. Here all expectations are met. Basically, this rum is like the Herrline, the basic data regarding aging are also the same. However, this bottling shines through incredible elegance. Fruit and wood play together intensively here and bring the high complexity beautifully to fruition. You can well guess here why the restaurant chef went for the exclusive bottling. Such elegance in the glass invites food pairing. Congratulations on that. Just a pity that one can only dream of having a bottle.

An exciting experience to experience the Savanna Esterbombe with barrel ageing! The fruit flavors are now joined by caramel, chocolate and vanilla. However, the mouthfeel is not yet smooth enough for me, which is why it's not quite enough for a 9/10.

Thanks to a friend who shared a dram, cause this bottle was not available in Rhum Fest Paris, and thus no photo. Simply amazing, deep and complex. Spices, esters, some chemical notes including some strawberries, maybe even in the Haribo candida version. And this was with just 0,5cl dram, I think a proper drinking session would have even increased my appreciation

Today I was able to catch up on the Savanna tasting, since I couldn't make it yesterday. The Herrline is a strong Savanna for me, just ahead of the Savanna Paris RX20222. Both are very complex (Paris probably a bit more than Herrline) and have plenty of power. But the big surprise is that cask #991 is my personal favorite. A bit thicker on the mouth, more dark notes, awesome balance. I need a bottle of that :D

Franconian Rum Tasting Gang & Jakob, 2023-07-27 Part 3: One of the rums of the year I was particularly excited about. No hope of getting a bottle but at least a sample... Thanks! I was not disappointed. A HERR essence, but not brute but fine and elegant. In addition to the strawberry, there are also notes of Wick Blue and other tropical fruits. Mature, but without wood. Reminds me a little of the HV HERR, only more mature.

RumX Savanna Masterclass 27.09.24: Like the HERRLINE, very fruity on the nose, here still with a sparkling green apple note and a slight ginger sharpness. In the mouth, it continues the same way, super fresh and pleasant. Awesome stuff, maybe the best Savanna I've had in the glass so far.

Very exclusive and breathtaking Savanna, which is unfortunately only available in small quantities. Very complex and a very nice interplay between fruit and barrel influences. For me, ester is not in the foreground here but complements the rum perfectly.

This one is a blast. The aroma profile is perfectly balanced, elegant and focused, not so all over the place like with the HERRLINE. Rarely have I been able to try such an awesome rum. You can sip it forever, everything just fits perfectly together. The best Savanna I've tried so far. Great! Still, a whole bottle would be too expensive for me (if you could even get it).

First of all, many thanks to Jens, who made it possible to try this rum - it's sometimes really not nice anymore how difficult it is to get a sample of some releases. Above all, wonderful gummy bear juice, those who like the Savanna HERR will love the slightly more balanced version with a little wood and leather, a really nice explosion of flavor that you can spend hours with - if you spill just one drop of it, you won't smell anything else for a while. .... But wait - the unaged HERR von Velier can do that too and this one is only a little aged and still an untamed and unbalanced beast that is still far from flavor perfection - what is this doing in a French star restaurant - this is more for rumnerds than for the tender tongues of gastro critics, who should definitely be stunned afterwards - I was expecting something more complex and at the same time soft like the Japan Tribute from last year and I am actually a little ... not even disappointed - because let's be honest, how can a rum for 500€ taste much better than a rum for 200€ ... but it doesn't fit into the setting, it's a Savanna full of fr ... sse and in my opinion absolutely overhyped and above all overpriced. If you answer the question - how many esters do you want in a sparsely stored savanna? with yes, you'll be really happy here - but if you're really looking for perfected finesse in the complexity of nuances, as I would have associated with a starred restaurant, you've missed out on little here. If this is supposed to be the best Savanna according to the RumX ratings, I would have to strongly disagree! - even if this is of course purely subjective. My points rating always includes the Plv, purely according to taste we would be at around 8.5-8.7

An absolutely excellent Savanna that I really like, although I always find it a bit hard to connect with Savanna, especially on the palate. But the nose is extraordinarily good. The warm, melted gummy bears are well integrated here and there is little acidity. On the palate there is again a slightly artificial note, but everything is well balanced with the wood. This bottling already pleased me best at the Savanna Master Class and this has been confirmed here.

If there’s something this great for every ride in the aerial ladder truck, I’ll pick you up with it every morning 😎🚒 Fantastic Grand Ârome from Savanna, which impresses in every way! I just find it interesting now what range the distillery offers nowadays, this one is definitely top-notch. Strawberry and brine with green olives on the nose, plus sweetness and yellow fruits, only very light traces of alcohol, a bit of cask and milky acidity. On the palate, a very easy-drinking experience, fruity strawberries with a yoghurty impression, balanced by light acidity from green apple, slight woody notes and spices. At the back, esters and tropical fruits with salt and wood. Sensational bottling!

On the nose huge mix of fruits both continental and tropical (pineapple, strawberies, green apple, almost like a multivitamin juice), gummy bears or bubble gum, light esters, mentol, light floral. On the palat the same amount of fruit, the gummy bear taste is little backgrounded here and gives way to mentol and spices and something lightly synthetic. Alcohol is integrated very well. The gummy bear taste stays on the palate after washing uit down with water. Top notch Savanna and right now my top one rum. Compared with Savanna Herrline which is close second.

Oh my, I really was looking forward to this. This is probably one of the more mystically rare bottlings that Savanna ever produced. A really nice story with An amazing restaurant at the center.
